roosevelt and their party, to come here to christ church for the commemoration of the national day of prayer. churchill's granddaughter wrote a book about churchill's travels and she said it would be hard to find a more e vocktive setting for this service because the home of george washington. it's a beautiful setting and a sacred space, and so they sat here in the washington family pew and the service was special at many levels. the church was packed. lot of secret service were in the church, troops in steel helmets with bayonnettes ring the church. they sang four hymns one of which was "the battle hymn of the republic" churchill never heard this before and the rector reports as he sang it, tears were streaming down his face, unashamedly, at the beauty of it. in fact churchill picked that to be one of the hymnless at his own funeral years later which he said was in honor of his american mother. the service was not about nonviolence. it was about the war and winning the war, and above all, it was a service of humility in asking god to forgive america's sins. this is roosevelt's goal.

we moved to the war scenes and they are brutal and bloody and if you have seen the passion of the christyou know that mel gibson absolutely really does gore. what that means is you get two separate movies going on. sometimes the battle sequences are absolutely horrific and up there with the steven spielberg stuff from saving private ryan but sometimes they teeter over into something which approachs parody, almost tropic thunder, so you get a weird mix. the movie feels like it is pulling in a number of different ways. i came out of this slightly baffled because there are things things in it that are really cheesy, some things that are really saccharine, other things that are brutal and i think it has moments that are really striking. the story is really striking. it is a true story and i have read a bit about him in the past. it is a great story. the point about that was that he is a brave man and refused to fight. just because the story is great, doesn't mean the film is consistently great. i wonder if the saccharine start at the beginning was mel gibson trying to prepare the american pu
