in the newsroom, christa delcamp 7 news spot man charged in the 2015 charleston church massacre will be allowed to represent imself-now and his up coming trial. a judge granted that motion today. jury selection now under way. the trial had been delayed so to stand trial. roof faces 33 federal charges after shooting and killing nine people inside an historically black church in charleston, south carolina. prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty. a new judge will hear the retrial of former university of cincinnati police officer ray tensing who shot and killed an unarmed black man the previous judge reduced herself saying the new trial should have a "blank slate." a jury was deadlocked on murder and him and a mistrial was declared earlier this month. he testified he feared for his life when this man tried to drive away during a traffic stop back in july of 2015. now his body camera captured the incident. defense attorneys say the man tried to use his car as a deadly weapons forcing tensing to fire his weapon. prosecutors say the evidence contradicts his story. >> anchor: a dea

he took the hostage note to class and that's when police were able to rescue her. 7's christa delcamp reports. >> reporter: at a middle school in louisiana it was a note an 11-year-old passed to a teacher that sent this man donald ray guy jail. guy who'see for quite some time has been wanted by authorities, accused of skipping court dates and wanted on domestic violence charges. >> it was concerning at first understanding that we potentially had a hostage situation. >> reporter: officials say the middlele 62 student at school tuesday morning shared a note for mom, saying she was in trouble. the note was apparently dated for last friday, quickly getting the sheriff's attention. >> there's always a chill that goes through you when you understand that maybe the child was going through a very bad what we actually thought records after talking to the 11-year-old and with some quick detective work they narrowed it down. they knew the suspect was known for running. the sheriff called in a tracking seem and extra officers armed with a search warranty to the home. >> we found guy hiding in the
