christie smith is there with details. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, jon. the thing is you can't really see much of the damage standing across the street there. you get a little closer and it is there. around the side of battalion chief telling us his heart sank when he realized this was the world famous chez panisse restaurant that caught fire overnight. started about 3:00 this morning with a single alarm fire. 911 caller reported smoke and flames coming from the building. firefighters say when they arrived they saw fire on the ground floor and flames reaching all of the way up to the second floor on the outside of this wood building. >> as i pulled up, you could see the front of the building like a wall of flames that was covering the first floor and lapping up the roof onto the second floor and working its way. at that point you can't tell whether or not it worked on the interior or exterior/interior fire. crews were able to keep the fire contained. >> reporter: one thing that may have made all of the difference here is the fact that there were sprinkler

christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon and marla. this is exactly the type of thing you don't want out there on the streets in the wrong hands but that's exactly what happened. the search is on this morning to try and get this assault rifle back. someone broke into an unmarked police car over the weekend and stole an ar-15. according to san francisco police, officers had parked and secured the car that it was in. they were working. someone broke in and stole it. an assault rifle. very similar to this one. the type that is issued specifically to specially trained officers so they can deploy at a moment's notice when they have incidents like a suspect that's barricaded himself inside a building. san francisco police saying no resource is being spared to try and get this back. they issued an alert to all area law enforcement to let them know this weapon is out there. anyone with information is asked to call southern station.
