thank you for joining us i'm christian schaffer. a drunk driver ran a trooper off the road last night, he barely escaped with his life. the trooper says the suspect aggressively engaged him, around midnight on mountain road in harford, that's when the chase started. unmarked state police cruiser bares the damage from splintering a fence on old joppa road, one of the rails pierced the front window, threatening the life of this senior trooper. >> his hand may have struck the radar unit in the vehicle. in some prove dential way, that fence post missed his head. >> reporter: state police say 22-year-old john jacob newsel the 5th of joppa, used this cobolt to flashlights and tailgate the cruiser before pulling up be side the trooper, revving his engine and taking off. the trooper chased the suspect for 3 miles before the crash here in front of the 7th day church. harford county sheriff's deputies spotted the cobolt later initiating a second chase before he crashed his car on singer road. the trooper who comes from a family of a long line

christian schaffer, abc2 news. >>> stephanie rawlings blake's administration announced a plan to managethe grand prix race. the plan has safeguards to help the race run efficiently. sherrie johnson joins us now with what is expected today from the city. >> charlie, in a few hours, the board of estimates will move forward with plans for the second annual baltimore grand prix race. this morning, the board of estimates is expected to approve a new five-year contract with new promoter down force racing. the new propertiers say the 2011 grand prix was a success, but it had bad management and brought in $47 million, for the economy, and the former grand prix promoter, baltimore racing development was the center for lawsuits for nonpayment of bills. the contract has safeguards to protect the city from losing money. the city can inspect down force's racings testimony records to check out the debt. it calls for keeping the finances private. city hall could review the information. down force racing will hold racing events in baltimore on labor day weekend, 2012 through 2016. the vote is expected

christian schaffer has more. chris stan? >> reporter: all along the attorneys and the judge in the case have talked about wrapping up the case by the weekend. today after losing an entire day the judge is hoping to move the case fairly expeditiously, so we're not certain it will finish by the weekend. the latest twist in the trial of george huguely, an illness for one of his attorneys, rhonda quagliana, no court today, just a temporary delay. >> the case will have to continue. they're not going to retry it. >> reporter: local attorney scott goodman said quagliana likely represented the next witnesses. george huguely is charged with killing yeardley love after breaking a hole in her bedroom door in may of 2010. his defense team said love died from suffocation, not blunt force trauma. on wednesday the defense called an expert on brain pathology who supported the defense's claim. >> that will be their role. >> reporter: leets mas will attempted to explain the bleeding by saying cpr could have caused it. the processtor said -- p

christian schaffer has a report from charlottesville. >> reporter: testimony resumes this morning shortly after 9:00. the next witnesses we expect to hear from, the first responders who came to yardley's apartment after she was killed. george's defense team argues that without intent the prosecution cannot convict him on the most serious charges he's facing, first degree murder, medical fee murder, even breaking and entering and larceny. they say possibly involuntary manslaughter. they say he did not intend to kill yardley love. in fact they plan to argue that love actually died from asphyxiation after passing out in her bed. and so as the prosecution begins to lay out its case we're seeing how they plan to try to prove that hughley did intend to kill love. the prosecution revealed and brought witnesses to testify about the turbulent relationship between them. they revealed a few months before the murder hughley held love by the neck with his arm, love's mother testified that she was shaken after the incident. they also say he wrote her a threatening e-mail just days before her death. >>

christian schaffer is covering the trial for us. ristian, what can we expect this second week of testimony? >> reporter: kelly, that first week was absolutely fascinating. capped by that playing friday of george hugley's interview with charlottesville police in which he admits to going into yeardley love's apartment and putting his hands on her although he repeated over and over that he did not kill her in that videotape. emotional to see and hear that on friday. what we can expect this week is the prosecution continuing to present its case. we saw friday was a crime scene investigator introducing a number of pieces of evidence, including the door prosecutors say huguley kicked in to gain access to yeardley love's bedroom. the door has a dinner plate sized hole in it that they brought right into the courtroom and showed to the jurors. but the crime scene investigator wouldn't speculate as to what exactly happened. so the prosecutor methodically built his case, saying with the crime scene investigator, here is the door, here is the ho
