christiane amanpour and fareed zakaria are once again joining us here in "the situation room." israeli air strikes against targets in syria on the u.s., on the obama administration, what will be the impact as far as the president is concerned? >> well, i think that two impacts here, israel laid down a red line and met it once it was crossed. in other words, israel's red line is the no advanced weaponry goes to hezbollah from iran through damascus. it's not the first time that it has launched strikes on military targets to make sure that doesn't happen. whether it has an impact on the obama administration remains to be seen, but clearly, people are worried about a wider war. i just spoke to a top former israeli security official who confirms what other israeli officials have said today, a, they needed to conduct these strikes against those weapons and against that military installation, b, they have no fight with the assad regime, and that is the message they are sending loud and clear. they are bending over backwards to do that, saying we're not trying to help the rebels, we're

christiane amanpour joining us now from new york.e syrian government, spokesman for the government, say revenge, de declaration of war, but what are the syrian options? they're a bit busy at the moment, aren't they? >> well, they are. this target, if it's exactly as we've been reporting and has been claimed has been a military target, and to that end, israel also said that it does not want to be drawn into any greater war. and frankly the commanding general out there near the golan heights has said, i do not feel the winds of war blowing. they are bending over backwards to try to send messages to the assad regime that this was not about getting involved in the internal civil war. this was about protecting themselves, they say, against any advanced weaponry going from syria to hezbollah. because they don't want hezbollah to be firing missiles or any advance weaponry into israel. so it seems to be at that point right now whether the syrians accept that the israelis are just doing this in what they call self-defense remains to be seen.
