[ explosion ] [ crowd noise ] >> you can hear the crowd there. some cheering. they were unaware of what was going on outside. simon, you were. there what did you think was going on? >> i thought this is too loud to be fireworks. the sound of fireworks is common at stadiums. a lot of people thought that. it was quite a boom. three or four minutes later, there was a second boom, and the ground shook a bit. i thought, there was something wrong here. we didn't know. we had no information. this were 80,000 people, enormous uncertainty. i had my laptop on, had my internet on. it took 25 minutes on the french sites to appear that there had been a french bomb and one person was injured. >> does anybody even get nervous? was there any idea that the match might stop? >> i think th

let's bring in christiane amanpour. you've been talking to a lot of the big minds both french and abroad about what they want to achieve here. what is the agenda? >> the main agenda, i talked to david attenburg, the world's eminent expert on naturalism. like everybody, he's saying this is the last ditch attempt to stop the temperatures rising beyond 2 degrees. that's their -- >> the wind doesn't seem to be a problem. >> we can blame this on climate change. we're in a wind tunnel right now. bottom line is how do you stop the emission of carbons in a way that is not too painfully expensive, especially on poor countries? india, for instance, they say, hey, you've had your economy, we need to burn coal. china is saying the same thing. that's one of the big issues that needs to be done. david attenburg said america put an astronaut on the moon ten years after president kennedy said that was going to happen. we can do this. we just need the political will. i talked to the french defense minist minister. he said they have some

let's bring in chief correspondent christiane amanpour. we have seen actions of the military variety. we have seen new action here. the motivation is just as important. there is regret and frustration going on. what is the dynamic now? >> they had to take action. if you listen to french officials talking about the wave of bombings in syria, they had to show they were serious immediately after the attack on the homeland. about 12 flights, the biggest attack that the french have taken part in. they are moving huge aircraft carrier, "charles de gaulle" into the gulf and saying more will come. they are saying that while we do this, we also have to have as we have seen the highly specialized police and security force, raids, 150 around this country alone, plus they are saying this isis threat will not be eliminated without a ground force. they are saying the russians and united states now need to get together with the joint strategy for syria. two strategies at least. russian, u.s. and any number of other strategies on the ground. there needs t

i'm anderson cooper. >> and i'm christiane amanpour.e here in paris at the place de la republique. there has been the most almighty manic. this whole square was emptied because somebody said they heard shots. the police have not been able to confirm any of that, nor did we hear any shots. >> very few people knew what it vs based on. they did see the police officers responding very aggressively, understandably. it was focused on an area around the corner from -- from this square where we're standing. so the people in the square actually couldn't even see what the original source of this allegedly was. but all the police in this area took cover, pointed their rifles toward that direction. they were yelling at people to get off the street, yelling at vehicles to move away. they blocked off traffic. other officers from other blocks moved in to try to zero in on whatever it was that had occurred. but it's very possible that there really wasn't anything to begin with. obviously people here are very on edge. i can tell you earlier in the day,

meantime, egypt's civil aviation minister tells our christiane amanpour that u.s. and british intelligence has not been shared with them. paul, does this have the characteristics of an isis attack? do they have the technology to actually detonate a bomb on a plane? >> wolf, it's certainly plausible the isis affiliate in sinai could have carried this out if they recruited an insider at sharm el sheikh airport. we understand the intelligence is pointing to the fact this was a conventional bomb rather than a sophisticated device. and it was infiltrated on to the aircraft by an insider working at the airport. and so that's well within the capability of isis in sinai. they have a lot of experience in putting together conventional explosives. it wouldn't be difficult for them to put a timer or some other triggering device on the device. >> mary, you've been investigating plane crashes for many years. the u.s. and the uk say intelligence suggest a bomb was planted on the plane if they didn't have substantive, perhaps classified secret information to back that up? >> proba

. >>> all right, john berman along with christiane amanpour here in paris, outside the bataclan theater we believe about 80 people were killed last night in this wave of terror attacks across this city, that left at least 129 people dead. and we have breaking news on that front. at least one american was killed in the attacks, and we now have the identity. joining us now in washington, our justice correspondent, pamela brown. pam, what have you learned? >> reporter: well, we are learning from the california state long beach university that one of the victims killed in the paris attacks is 23-year-old nohemi gonzalez. this is according to a spokesperson for the university. this spokesperson telling cnn this she was studying abroad for a semester. she was one of nearly 80 foreign exchange students and she was studying design in paris. we know that there are so many american students who go overseas, go to paris, and study. she was one of them. and we are now learning the sad news that she was killed in one of the attacks yesterday. officials telling me, it's believed, at this stage, that

i amm i am joined with john berman, christiane amanpour. tell us how we got here. >> reporter: we got here overnight. there was a lot of gunfire in sontene. what that was was this large law enforcement operation. we are told targeting, they believe abdelhamid abaaoud, he is believed to have been the mastermind behind friday's paris attacks here. they killed 129 people. they thought he might be there. >> reporter: that was the tip. what did they find when they got there? >> we are hearing from the french prosecutor one female killed herself inside the apartment where the raid took place. two other suspected terrorists killed. one possibly by sniper fire. the other unclear. crucially, three suspected terrorists are in custody. this will be extremely important. it's not just forensic evidence. it's human intelligence. you can be sure they will be questioning them until they are able achieve as much information gathering as possible from them. >> christiane you have been following these events pretty much from their inception this morning. they

christiane amanpour is joining us right now. christiane, what are you hearing? >> pretty much the same as all of you. listening to various media outlets in the last hour or more, i heard the deputy mayor of paris talk and you heard what he said, as well, that this is obviously a massive shock for them. they had known, they had terrible premonitions that after charlie hebdo less than a year ago it might happen again, every city believes that right now with the isis threat and the blow back and yet, he said how could we have thought if it is this, it could have happened so soon and so violently? this far outweighs anything that happened in january at charlie hebdo last january, this past january. it's bigger than 7/7 and it has come as we've seen huge attacks in beirut, which isis claimed this i can woo. we've seen what appears to be pretty much well-confirmed. some kind of isis satellite group or splinter group in the sinai that claimed and attributing for sure the downing of the russian plane and this also is what a lot of people have had as their worst nightmar

i'm christiane amanpour live from the place de la republique in a very rainy paris this morning. as the hunt is still on for the man who has been called the eighth suspect. now, he is the french national we've been talking about for the last week, salah abdeslam. possibly the only one who survived friday's attacks. and a source tells cnn that the search has now expanded to the netherlands. but dutch media says the justice ministry there denies that. french police confirm that the alleged ringleader of last friday's attacks, abaaoud is dead, killed in wednesday's raid in saint-denis. the prosecutors say fingerprints and prints from the soles of his feet helped identify his bullet-riddled body. cnn's erin burnett spoke with nathalie galat who is relieved. >> he knew in the last month that his son was linked to all the terrorism acts which happen in europe. he was afraid. to learn that his son abdelhamid had committed something horrible. >> and sources tell cnn the woman who blew herself up during wednesday's raid has been identified as hasna aitboulahcen. and you can hear police co

i'm christiane amanpour and they're still searching after 24 hours of heavy raids. suspected terrorists were killed yesterday. they don't know yet whether the ring leader, the target of the raid, is among the dead. amateur video gives you a sense of the overwhelming force that police used in that predawn raid. eight people were arrested. authorities say they moved in just in time to keep the suspects from launching another attack. so, let's bring in our senior international correspondent who wads there. it's almost 24 hours ago and in a way it's still ongoing. so, what's the latest? >> reporter: the forensic teams are still at work and there are controlled detonations being set off and they're still finding unexploded ordinants and the house itself is unsafe because part of one floor has collapsed because so much heavy ordinance was used by the suicide bomber herself and by the police to blast in there. so, they are still at work and even from the outside, you can see the structural damage that was done to that building in that very intense raid. >> one of the dead

i'm christiane amanpour live in new york this week. is being fought on the streets of europe as well as skies over syria and iraq. paris police tell cnn tonight that part of the suburb malrouge has been sealed off after they discovered an article resembling a suicide vest in a garbage bin. a disposal team is on site and authorities are trying to work out if it contains explosives. the french president, francois hollande will visit it the white house tuesday and urge president obama for more support in the war against isis. that as france has started launching air strikes from the carrier "charles de galle." earlier today the british prime minister david cameron went to paris to show solidarity with hollande. both paid respects to victims at the bataclan hall where 89 young people were slaughtered. cameron will try again to get parliament to accept the uk cannot sit on the side lines and must join coalition air strikes against isis in syria. this comes as the heart of europe is on partial lockdown. streets in brussels, belgium, usually
