christiane amanpour is watching this historic election result for us in paris. also with us, isa suarez in northern france. christiane, starting with you. what are the latest results there and how is france react being to the election of emanuel macron? >> reporter: well, we've just concluded a three-hour party here behind me. and people are still here. it's massive. huge, huge numbers of people have been flooding in here all day to watch the results. and they've only just seen their new president come out on stage and address the nation in a very exubera exuberant, but very serious and strong way, saying thank you to everybody for reject being the politics of fear and hate, and for voting for the politics of hope and for future and for light and for progressive toll ra tolerance and politics. he said this country faced a choice -- either continue to be outward looking and tolerant, or go inward looking, anti-immigrant, anti-eu. he did something extraordinarily brave. he walked out for a period of minutes with a camera on him all alone. guess what? to the anthem

oh, christiane amanpour is with us now, looking at the screen to find this out. ertson is here with us as well. christiane, let's first go to you. again, that was a rather stern message from the president of the united states, that it's time for nato, these nato members to start paying. >> well, you know, it's the message he's been delivering even before he became president. you remember at the convention he started by saying, he started with this sort of idea of this transactional relationship between the oldest military alliance and the most successful military alliance in the world. and now, though, he's bringing -- they fully expected it, though you could see in the body language of the other members as he was speaking that they did look a little bit like shifty children being lectured by the headmaster. they knew that he was going to be coming with that message, and some of them believe that that message has to be delivered, because it gives them cover to encourage all members to pay their 2% of gdp. some of them are paying it, some of them are not. but what

. >> christiane amanpour joins us now. christiane, the president is more popular in israel than the in united states. as we note the president seen as unconventional, there are c o'connco unconventional stops. unconventional to go from saudi arabia to israel. the president will be in jerusalem in a matter of hours. what do you see? >> obviously it is a significant trip as you said for the president of the united states to make his first trip to that part of the world is an unusual departure. the flight of air force one to israel from riyadh, yes, that was the first time, but not a significant breakthrough. the president and people hoped to bring back from riyadh an agreement from there that israeli flights would have flight rights. we don't believe he has been able to secure that or direct phone calls established between israel and arab world. we don't believe that has happened either. we have not heard about it. what he has done is in israel and riyadh is attack back from campaign rhetoric to more traditional bipartisan u.

joining us now christiane amanpour our chief international correspondent. aaron david miller, cnn global affairs analyst and lieutenant francona our military analyst. christiane, to you. wow. >> listen, poppy, it's absolutely correct angela merkel did step forward and say this stuff over the weekend. bus she also pulled britain into it as well. she basically was referring to both the united states and britain. why? because britain, which is the second most important heavy lifter when it comes to military might and all sorts of other things with nato after the united states is on the brexit track. so they're very concerned, they can't count on britain, either. and then, of course, regarding the united states, you know they ended the g7 summit in sicily on an unprecedented deeply divided note. they could not even come up with a, you know, with a joint statement as they always do because president trump would not agree to the commitment to the paris climate accords. so that whole event, you know, a bit of discome bob lags to what should be a set piece summit me

our chief international correspondent christiane amanpour is in manchester for us tonight. t today, what do we know about them, christiane? >> reporter: it's been a very fast moving investigation, we have been getting information from authorities very, very quickly. there's been 17 arrests total since the terrorist attack monday night here in the income are -- the manchester area. the latest one about 100 miles from where i am right now that, includes over the last 24, 48 hours, a couple of detonated explosions, controlled explosions going into the various residences in this area, to see what they can find out. and the police constable said that this is a network we're investigating, not a lone wolf, they're desperately trying to find out if there is anybody else here in this region, and with the threat level critical, they need to find out quickly because critical means an attack is likely. we've had this extraordinary reporting from libya itself with our cnn producers talking to friends of the family and others inside tripoli. we know that the father was briefly detained.

speaking to journalist christiane amanpour this afternoon as part of a luncheon for women internationalharity, clinton took personal responsibility for her loss, but she also suggested other factors had a significant impact. >> we overcame a lot in the campaign. we overcame an enormous barrage of negativity, of false equivalency and so much else. but as nate silver, who, you know, he doesn't work for me. he's an independent analyst, but one considered to be very reliable, you know, has concluded if the election had been on october 27th, i'd be your president. so did we make mistakes? of course we did. did i make mistakes? oh, my gosh, yes. you know, you'll read my confession and my request for abso lugs. but the reason i believe we lost were the intervening events in the last ten days. >> at one point, hillary clinton talked about her forthcoming book which is about the campaign and admitted reliving the process was a painful one. she managed to point out at least one silver lining from last november. >> remember, i did win more than 3 million votes than my opponent. so it got really --

our christiane amanpour has the latest on that, she joins us now from manchester. what is the latest on the investigation? >> reporter: well, it's just so heart breaking when we listen to that interview, and as you said, anderson, there are more parvens in that terrible, terrible position, looking for their loved ones, searching the morgue, searching the hospitals. the authorities have made an arrest, they have made a couple of controlled explosions in other parts of the city. and they're trying to figure out if this person who they have identified as the killer, whether he acted completely alone or whether he had any kind of support, whatever kind of support and whether there are any other cells or any other potential attackers on the loose, as you know, the raising of the threat level to critical by the prime minister, means that another attack could be imminent. so they have done that and they have also, you know, deployed thousands of military, of the armed forces as well, who are going to support the police and to relieve some of the police from other sort of

she joined christiane amanpour. >> he had one message, your opponent, and it was a successful message. make america great again. where was your message? do you take any personal responsibility? >> oh, of course. i take absolute personal responsibility. i was the candidate. i was the person who was on the ballot and i am very aware of the problems and the shortfalls. i'm very proud of the campaign we ran and of the staff and the vowel l volunteers and the people out there day after day and it wasn't a perfect campaign. there's no such thing. but i was on the way to winning until a combination of james comey's letters on october 28th and the russian wikileaks who raised doubts in the minds of people inclined to vote for me and got scared off. and the evidence for that interveni intervening event is, i think, compelling, persuasive and so we overcame a lot in the campaign. we overcame an enormous barrage of negativity, false equivalency and so much else. but as nate silver, who i -- he doesn't work for me. he's an independent analyst but one considered to be very reliable has concluded,

you did a very long interview with our christian amanpour. did you feel about the outcome of this election? >> well, of course i disagree with the outcome. i thought donald trump would make a terrible president, and i think he's proven me right every day. but i don't rejoice in that fact. i don't feel vindicated. i feel concern we have leadership that is misguided, unprepared, bigoted, and is not going to be good for country. i want that to change as soon as possible. and so while i think there's some merit in looking backwards at the last election, i think most of our efforts should be in looking forward to the 2018 election, making sure we get a congress that can stand up to the president. and then looking forward to how we can move this country forward in 2018, 20/20, and beyond. i don't think we need to relitigate this past election too much. >> the thing is, though, is that the folks he puts around him, when you see a decision like the alton-sterling case how does that leave you feeling about this attorney general, jeff sessions? >> well
