joining us from mayor land is nasa scientist eric christianson. good morning, eric. >> good morning, bill. >> reporter: what have you learned in 10 years launched the satellites? >> it helps us us to understand how the science creates space weather and it has done two important things. one we have identical cameras on the two spacecraft. just as you need two eyes to 3 the 3 dimension, we were able to see the structures in solar flares in 3 dimension for the first time and the other thing first time we were able to see more than just a side of the sun facing the earth. we saw the entire sun at one time and that helps us to understand how the sun and solar activity and solar storms evolved. >> reporter: interesting. how hot does it get where the satellites are? >> so it's about the same distance from the sun as earth is, so it's about the same temperatures here as but we have another mission that will get really close to the sun, between -- 20 times closer than the early, and it will get really hot. >> reporter: how does an eclipse help us to unders
