christie? >> she calling on the adults to volunteer at least one hour a week at an oakland public school. since we have a shortage of officers, the city doesn't have the resources it once did. we have a new mayor coming in. now is the time for mayors to step up. the chief unveiled the program at a crime tracking meeting last night here in oakland. the goal he said is to make at risk kids aware of other possibilities so they don't turn to a life of crime. police will also increase their presence at the middle schools that would be involved in the pilot program. he said the idea came from a meeting with himself and the oakland schools chief. both believe that reaching young people early is the key to bringing crime down in the city. keeping them on the right path. the middle schools are madison, west lake, roosevelt and frick middle school in east oakland. if it works out in those pilot school, it would be expanded to all schools here in oakland. live in oakland, christie smith today in the east

live in oakland, christie smith, today in the bay. >> thanks a lot, christie. now out of the south bay, an overturned big rig is blocking lanes. bob redell is live at the scene in san jose with the latest on conditions there. bob? >> reporter: good morning, brent. four of the five lanes and 101 at the 880 overpass of shut down. the fast lane is the only lane open. it's because of the overturned big rig. the good news is that the to truck operators are starting to lift it back up to get it back into the up right position. chp tell us that it looks like things are going good and they will get an idea within five minutes to get the big rig off the road and get all the lanes back open. they are sticking with an estimate of 45 minutes, but maybe in five machines they will be able to revise that. southbound 101 to northbound 880, that transition is shut down. southbound 880 to southbound 101 the same. that ramp is also shut down. the big rig was coming down the ramp when it lost control and flipped over. the driver is doing okay. as far as for traffic on southbound 1

christie smith is in oakland with everything that's planned. good morning. >> good morning. they are calling this a march for justice for derek jones. supporters say the popular barber often barbecued out here in front of his shop. this is where they are going to gather later this afternoon and march from here all the way to the bart station, the site of the shooting of an unarmed passenger, oscar grant. they question the timing of this shooting on the heels of the mehserle sentencing. jones was 37 years old, a father of one, unarm and shot and killed by oakland police monday night. some supporters of his thought he was shot in the back, but they are reporting an independent autopsy shows he was hit in the front. oakland police said they believed he was reaching towards his waist band in a police foot chase, making officers believe he had a weapon. this followed a domestic violence call after a woman was fighting with him at the barbershop earlier. police apparently tried to shock him, but that did not work. there was a chase and the confrontation. folks meeting here this af

christie smith is live where the chase ended.trying to determine why the two men and women were running from them? >> that's right. they don't know for sure, but they have good ideas. let me show you where the chase ended here in oakland. the driver slammed into the parked car before he bailed out of the car that he was driving and started running and hiding in back yards near east 25th and highland. oakland police and the chp looking for him with guns drawn overnight. 90 minutes in, they found him with the help of police dogs. the car was towed out overnight. this started overnight when oakland police spotted what they thought may have been a stolen car around the same time that a call came in about an armed robbery and the descriptions of the driver and the person were similar. they are investigating a handful of other armed robberies. oakland police tried to stop the car and the driver got on interstate 580 when the chp chased him over the bridge and back. he turned around and went back here to oakland and crashed. two people

christie smith is live on that scene with more on what police say happened. morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. antioch police are still here on scene this morning. we're watching them take measurements and still collect evidence, trying to piece together exactly how this happened after a 21-year-old man was shot and killed outside a convenience store. there are evidence markers over by the exit there. police received a call just before 9:00 last night to buchanan road and gentrytown. when officers arrived they found a 21-year-old man suffering from gunshot wounds. paramedics came, tried to save him but it was too late. there was also apparently a passenger in the car who wasn't injured and was able to give police suspect information, although they're not releasing that yet this morning. they do say it appears the suspect was on foot when he opened fire and then he ran away. police say they're not investigating this as gang-related, but it does appear that it was personal and they are asking witnesses to come forward. reporting live in antioch,

today in the east bay's christie smith is live where it ended and the arrest of three suspects. >> good morning, scott. police are here processing the scene at east 25th and highland, paying particular attention to this white car here that you see behind me. they got the third suspect in custody after he jumped out of the car and started running into back yards. this is also the car that investigators believe could be tied to a string of street robbers, as many as seven in the lake area recently. i spoke with police and they told me they have three in custody. apparently one of the victims gave a description of three people and the car. very likely a stolen car. there no plates on it this morning. officers spotted it overnight near interstate 580. police followed the car and the chp pursued the car over the bay bridge. the driver turned it around at the island and went back into oakland. police followed the driver to where we are now. the chp told us they used a pit maneuver to stop the car and crash into a parked car here. they were able to arrest two people inside immediately. both a

in oakland, christie smith today in the bay. >> the u.s.d monthly jobs reports. bob redell is in the satellite center pulling together the latest information. >> good morning. there is a surprise. it's not in the unemployment rate. that is 9.6% for the third straight month. the surprise is in the creation of new nonfarm jobs. the consensus was that it would be somewhere in the 60,000 range. it turns out it was 151,000 new payroll jobs created according to the u.s. department of labor. there were revisions revised september saying there were 110,000 fewer job losses and looking at august and september, the u.s. department of labor said there were 93,000 more jobs or they were revising the plift sector job creation number to 93,000, an increase. the 151,000 new job number for the month of october is the most jobs created in five months. this is certainly good new when is you consider you need 100,000 new jobs each month to keep up with the u.s. population growth. still short of the 200,000 new jobs to knock down the number of unemployed ameri

today in the bay's christie smith is live with more on how it will all work. good morning. >> good morning. when you don't have a lot of money or resources, you lean on what you do have. the police chief here in oakland is leaning on people. he is looking for volunteers to step up to the plate and help out at middle schools here in oakland as a way to keep kids on track and intervene with at risk kids before they turn to a life of crime. he unveiled this program at a crime tracking meeting last night saying the city is really at a critical point with a shortage of police officers. theyed a off about 80 and we have a new mayor. he said the idea came from a discussion he had with the school's chief here in oakland. both think reaching young people early is a key to reducing the crime rate here in the city. police will try to increase their presence around schools to make sure kids feel safe coming and going and volunteers are being asked to spend at least an hour or more a week with a child and lead them know about the possibilities for a bright future. the pilo
