christie smith is live in dublin. she's been following the story all morning long and has the latest details. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is still an active investigation. we have a team from the d.a.'s office here, the sheriff's department, crime scene technicians processing the scene. the coroner hasn't arrived yet. that's the officers car over there. she radioed in she was trying to contact a suspicious person. within three minutes after that, there was gunfire. we were talking with a sergeant out here telling us she contacted a man walking around a car dealership. it seemed out of place. she called for back up. deputies were on the way. she got out of the car. this man confronted here across the street near the car dealership and started hitting her in the head. >> don't know at this point. it was 1:30 in the morning. this is an area not heavily traveled. could be an issue where she thought it was a burglary. we have a furniture store here. we don't know what the thought process was. >> now, i just spok

christie smith is live with an update. >> reporter: good morning to you.e are talking with neighbors in antioch. they definitely heard the gunfire erupt after 9:00 last night. for one family, it came dangerously close with bullets flying into their window. a mother telling us this is very close to where her 9-year-old son would have been sleeping in his bunk bed had she not gotten him up and given him something to eat. it's on sycamore drive where a man was shot and taken to the medical center. we are trying to get an update on his condition this morning. the mother didn't want to go on camera but said it sounded like fire crackers at first. >> i came in and saw the thing broken on the ground. i said why did you break this. he said i didn't touch it. i looked in the window and saw three bullet holes. i looked across the closet and saw the holes in the closet. i panicked and went outside. i saw the cops and said i think somebody shot through my son's room. >> reporter: she also had an infant in the home at the time. everyone is shaken but okay. we had a cal

christie smith is live in san francisco with more on that announcement. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. well, he certainly has a long career with sfpd including running two of the department's toughest station houses, including the bayview. well, now he is the pick to be police chief. we're talking about captain greg sur, he's 52 years old. the then chief moved over to the district attorney's office. he was most recently in command of the bayview district where homicides dropped dramatically while he was in charge. he is mayor ed lee's choice and has a number of strong backers, like the police officers association and state attorney general kamala harris. when he was deputy chief he was one of the command staff indicted in 2003 for allegedly conspiring to obstruct the investigation into fajita-gate, who can forget that. that was where off-duty cops allegedly beat up two men over their food. a judge ultimately dropped the indictment as baseless, but there are a number of things he's going to be dealing with as well, including budget cuts. b

christie smith is live on the scene with the latest information. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. within the last 15 minutes or so, busy broadway reopened at fourth street. it had been shut down since 1:00 this morning. oakland police just left a couple minutes ago. there are family members of the victims still on scene but too distraught to talk to us about this but had to see for themselves. here is what we know, homicide detectives say before 1:00, a man got out of a car and tried to go into sweet jimmy's bar. he was denied access. he barged in and started shooting killing two men, wounding four other people, including two women. investigators telling us it doesn't look like anyone inside returned fire. right now, investigators are talking to witnesses downtown trying to come up with a suspect description. a very busy night for opd. this shooting plus two others overnight. nonlife-threatening injuries. they heard gunfire erupt around the corner. oakland police asking anyone with any information to give them a call. report

christie smith is live with a look at what happened. christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. i spoke with the police and they are hoping to get the word out to the public, they are hoping to find this guy who grabbed a 12-year-old girl on her way to school and he pulled a gun on her and threatened her, she says. we have a sketch for you. he's a hispanic man in his 30s. about 5'6" to 5'9" about 170 to 200 pounds with spiky brown hair and a bald spot on top. she was minding her own business walking to downer elementary school when a man in a light blue pick-up truck started to whistle at her then follow her in a truck. that's when it escalated. he got out and tried to grab her. she pushed him and he stumbled. he pulled out a gun and said get in or i'll kill you. she was able to make it to her school. again, that truck is light blue, believed to be from the 1980s or 1990s with primer on it and a dent in the rear. the hood may have primer on it. he was wearing dark sunglasses, a hoody and blue jeans. police are saying they don't have similar reports. the good news in all this, if

christie smith is live at the scene with a look at what happened and new developments. ristie. >> reporter: good morning to you. the wild weather likely played a role. since we have been here, we have seen heavy rain, hail, ice. in fact, hail on the ground right now along interstate 880. i have to tell you, it's still here. it hasn't melted yet this morning. i just got off the phone with chp and they have telling me a driver involved in this accident was arrested for driver under the influence. the accident happened on 880 which was temporarily shutdown overnight. an officer was trying to help a driver in a pick-up truck who slid on the ice. the officer was out of the car. apparently the driver having problems with the tire. that's when another driver hit the officer, knocked him in front of the pick-up truck. conditions out there were wild all night. >> we have had a couple calls on both directions here with the hail because it looks like it's just basically in this area here. down the street, it's dry as anything. i don't know, just an isolated incident here. >> report

today in the bay's christy smith joins us live with the latest.od morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. there's a berkeley fire inspector here trying to figure out how the fire started and a supervisor from pg&e here because there were a number of utility hazards. when the firefighters arrived here on dwight way, the best part, everyone inside, they smelled smoke and got out okay. when firefighters arrived, the problem they faced was there were power lines running across the street from the burning home. they had to attack it not from the front but from the sides. this started at 1:00. it took 40 minutes to knock down. another hazard, two gas meters blew creighiting a five to six foot flame that burned for 90 minutes. here is the battalion chief. is it unusual for these meters to blow up? >> if there's direct flame it's definitely a possibility. if we get there early enough, we can keep the flame off the meters. with the amount of fire we had showing, it did you want surprise me at all. >> reporter: the first thing pg&e did when they got here

christie smith joins us live with the latest. >> reporter: good morning to you. we have been watching this all morning. they are being very thorough collecting evidence in the shooting. it happened across the street at the dealership. the coroner isn't there yet. deputies heard from the sergeant involved in this. she thought this man was trying to kill her by hitting her head into the cement. again, this is near the car dealership. she fired at him. this started at 1:30 in the morning when the sergeant noticed a man walking near the stores and the correspond lot. she thought it seemed odd. she phoned in and tried to contact the man about what he was doing out here. she says he attacked her and she didn't know why. sergeant j.d. nelson with the sheriff's department is saying the dublin police department had run ins with this man before. >> he's familiar to the dublin police. he's been arrested on numerous occasions. he's had violence in his past and been arrested for fighting and those kinds of things. >> reporter: of course she fired at him over there. the sergea

christie smith is there live. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. the scene is still active here this morning. i just spoke with a detective from oakland police homicide department. right now, they are interviewing witnesses downtown. here is what happened. it was before 1:00 a.m. a man got out of a car and tried to get into sweet jimmie's bar. he was denied access. according to the detective he tried to push his way in and started shooting. there were ten to 12 people inside the bar at the time. a horrible scene. two people shot and killed. four people wounded. two in critical condition and two in stable condition. two of the victims were women. the motive at this point is unclear. detectives aren't releasing much information about the car involved. he tells me there were a couple people in the car, not just the shooter. this is still a very active investigation. meantime, while this was going on around the corner investigators telling me there was more gunfire as a club was letting me out. one person shot in the arm there. this is near the produce
