let's turn to christie smith. she's live this morning as well. christie? >> yeah, since we just last checked in with you a couple of minutes ago, we saw a line of police officers for a different direction. that is east on 14th street. these officers in riot gear. they've come face to face with the demonstrators just as they had on another street. who's street? our street. they're face-to-face with them right now. i have to say, it's hard to see from here. you see the demonstrators and police, and behind them on the right, there are more police coming up. they seem to be coming from the clay street direction, where a gentleman that i've come to know from occupy oakland says that he saw quite a few officers in vans and unmarked cars coming up that way. they appear to be coming towards the plaza from 9th and clay. we'll show you what's going on this weekend. this is down broadway. the police station, if you know the area. it's down on 7th. they just left the van and moved it into the middle of the street. you can see the police continue to march forward. it l

christie smith scene bob redell are live in oakland. but let's first check in with christi. last the latest there? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. tension is really building here this morning in downtown oakland. within the last 20 minutes or so we saw police show up here and, if you can see that car down there, that's the fremont police department. some officers in riot gear standing there. they are still a block away at 14th and franklin street. if we can pan the camera around, you can see what's going on here in the intersection at 14th and broadway. demonstrators have been here 2:15 this morning. so far they're walking around talking about what their plan would be. they tell us they hope to remain nonviolent. we really haven't seen riot police move in on them on foot. they're saying at this point they want to remain peaceful but we're hearing people yelling and walking around. just a sengs of confusion. the city served three eviction notices on the encampment. we're seeing people in raincoats. some have swim goggles on. some have shields up in case police moved

. >> briefly before we throw it to christie smith. you were there on the 25th as christie was. how would you describe the mood, the vibe the energy, as police were moving in? >> well, the tactics are different. the officers showed up in mass around 4:30. they quickly surrounded the plaza. they made the announcement this is an unlawful assembly. then they removed the protesters. 50 to 80 were arrested then. and in the core that were in the middle, were doing the exact same thing as the colleagues here were doing, they had arms linked. they had the peace symbol flashing to the officers, and they really went without any protests. they went away peacefully is the best way to put it. just like these people did here. so the tactics were different. this time, maybe 4:30 this morning, officers establish a perimeter several blocks around ogawa plaza, just to keep vehicle traffic out. and around 5:00 this morning, it's when they came into the actual plaza itself. they held a perimeter around the camp site until a few minutes ago when they went in. so they held a perimeter for about an ho

, nbc bay area's christie smith was there all morning long. and she has the protesters' side of the story concerning police tactics during the early morning raid. >> reporter: by late morning only a handful of demonstrators remained here at 14th and broadway. sometimes they go out into the intersection and try and stop traffic. some were prepared, they say, for a full clash with police. and while it was tense, this eviction was different than the last. overnight, anxious demonstrators from frank ogawa plaza took over the intersection at 14th and broadway, waiting for a police raid. helicopters hovered overhead. >> i'm nervous. i went back home and i talk ed o my daughter. she's 9 1/2. she was pretty scared. you know, mommy, don't get arrested again. >> reporter: she was worried that officers might launch tear gas, as they have in clashes that followed the first raid in october. the show of force today, overwhelming numbers that made arrest, and took down the occupy oakland encampment. >> a lot more cops, but behaving a little more -- a little

christie smith joins us live at oakland. o occupy group is trying to distance itself from the violence. it may take the action that nearly is forced by the city. >>> good morning, laura. i just spoke with a demonstrator off camera. he said it's been a sad imand hard time for the movement. a man was shot and killed yesterday. he said it's not necessarily tied to the movement. i wanted to show you how close it was. this is the encampment. the shooting happened 40 feet away from the steps of the plaza. demonstrators with occupy oakland say they were among the first to run out here and try to help the victim. but the tribune reporting a small fight broke out inside the camp. after that he called in someone from outside the camp to help. he visited the camp before. it escalated. occupy oakland demonstrators tried to stop it. later there were five or six shots. police are saying the victim may not have been involved in any dispute. mayor quan said for the second time the camp needs to go, but how and when she didn't explain. >> i

i'm christie smith. back to you in san jose. >>> it is 6:04 now. there are no occupy camps in oakland this morning. police clearing the oakland snow park earlier today, leaving the city without any encampments. dozenses of officers swept in after midnight to remove the few tents still pitched. reporters say it was quick and peaceful. they were allowed to temporarily stay following a raid at the encampment of frank ogawa plaza last week. the protesters are working on another plan this morning. they're now calling for a strike at all west coast ports. this is video from a recent strike at the port of oakland. occupy oakland says the west coast port shutdown is set to happen the 12th. the plan is to disrupt operations on a large scale. they say the strike is in response to coordinated attacks on the occupations and workers across the nation. >>> today uc davis chancellor will meet with student protesters to talk about the use of pepper spray by campus police. this is video from friday. two officers are on paid administrative leave. you see video showi

i'm christie smith. jon and laura back to you. >>> the man accused in two attacks on police officers including the death of a sergeant 40 years ago returns to court this morning. ronald is expected to plead guilty to shooting at south san francisco officers who tried to arrest him for credit card fraud way back in 1968. he originally pleaded no contest but disappeared before he could be sentenced. he turned himself in after spending more than 40 years on the run. he's also accused of the shooting death of a san francisco officer in 1971. in that case he denies any involvement. >>> oakland's mayor quan says she's restructuring her office. she hired ann campbell washington as the new chief of staff. she served as chief of staff for former mayor brown. she will serve as senior adviser, jest a week after the deputy announced she was stepping down. >>> for fallout from the pepper spray incident. the quiet college city quickly becoming the latest -- for the occupy movement. in this comes after a highly publici

reporting live in san francisco, i'm christie smith. jon and marla, back to you. >> christie, thank you. >>> u.c. davis, police chief is now on leave. and calls for his resignation. >> officers using pepper spray on a crowd of peaceful protesters. nbc bay area joins us now. >> reporter: all the victims pretty much begging the question, who's next, if anyone, in the fallout over this incident. it all stems from friday, where campus police used pepper spray on students who were peacefully protesting on campus. it was revealed early this morning. the university has now placed campus police chief on administrative leave. she joins two other police officers who were previously put on leave this weekend. the chancellor has asked that they investigate the use of force by campus police officers. and the heat is also growing on the u.c. davis chancellor. one of the students demonstrations have started calling on her to resign. that petition drive has already, as of this morning, garnered more than 50,000 hits. students say it is clear. >> person

. >> we begin with christie smith at frank ogawa plaza. the fires are out but the damage has been done. >> there's a lot of clean-up going on this morning. for people coming here to work, people getting off the b.a.r.t. trains, i have to tell you, their jaws drop when they see the amount of vandalism here in downtown oakland. someone broke this window that you see here. but we've seen demonstrators with occupy oakland trying to clean it up, that woman posting a sign saying i'm sorry. one demonstrator said that a separate group decided to try and reopen a vacant building as a homeless shelter last night. and when police showed up, this group got nervous and agitated because they already had a clash with police last week and then it deteriorated. over night oakland police tried to clear the area around a vacant building that pro efforts had taken over near frank ogawa plaza. bottles and lit flares were thrown at police as officers launched tear gas and bean bags. dozens were arrested and after the damage was clear. spray paint, smashed windo

nbc bay area's christie smith live in berkeley with more on both stories this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. demonstrators here are waiting for answers on that just like everyone else. we're supposed to hear about that at a press conference at 8:30 this morning. but right now they've got their own situation. last week there was a clash with police, and right now, the demonstrators are back. they've got at least 12 to 15 tents out here this morning, despite the university saying that encampments are illegal. there are police out here this morning from uc and alameda sheriff's department as well. i spoke with some of those officers. they said they most recently spent time at occupy oakland. in fact, there are demonstrators from occupy oakland this morning. we shot new video of the encampment a couple minutes ago. occupy cal demonstrators voted to put up the tents again last night. this is a second attempt. again, last week police moved in and tore them down. there are two inquiries going down about police tactics and the use of force. i spoke with one o
