christie smith is live in oakland at the scene with what is happening right now. christie. >> reporter: good morning to you. there is an improvement in the situation, and that is that two lanes are back open on the freeway off ramp, this is northbound 880 at market street near west oakland. now, what happened a little earlier is that a big rig caught fire. if we can pan over here, you can see the front of the cab there. i spoke briefly with the driver, and what he's saying is that he picked up a load from long beach and was heading to the port of oakland and driving and he heard a boom sound. he decided to pull over, see what was going on. then the engine started smoking and caught fire. fortunately he was able it to get out, but during that time, firefighters arrived here in oakland. they had to shut down the ramp so that they could put the fire out. now, they've been trying to talk with him about what he's carrying. he's not sure, but it doesn't seem to be dangerous and no fuel leaks, that sort of thing. they have called a tow truck in, but i just spoke with a ch

christie smith has the latest. christie? >> reporter: good morning to you, laura. firefighters brought in a big load of lumber. they'll use that to try and shore up the carport area because it was so badly damaged in this fire. the building now has a yellow tag on it. residents can only get their belongings out but they can't stay. firefighters and police are working on this investigation together. they don't know how it started but it may have been set on purpose. car after car left a charred shell in a carport of an apartment building on stambaugh street. resident jose says he was up after midnight. >> i was on the computer last night. and i saw my dad's car beeping and knocked on my dad's door and said all the cars are burning. once i ran outside to see the cars, three blew up tame. >> reporter: the teen couldn't believe what he saw. five cars burned, another six had heat damage. he says he grabbed his two little sisters. >> i was standing in the middle, and i yelled to everybody to get out, and my mom -- i told my mom to call the firefighters and they came. >>

nbc bay area's christie smith is live at the scene where at least one person has been taken to the hospital so far. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. right now several alarmed ladder trucks are in front of the building basically blocking the street here. they have their ladders extended all the way up to this seven-story building. it's an apartment. you don't see smoke or flames because the fire was mostly in the back of the building. i just spoke with a firefighter, and they tell me that at this point it's almost contained. that's the good news. it started about 10:00 this morning on leavenworth between o'farrell and geary and quickly jumped to three alarms for several reasons, one being that the buildings are so close together and they wanted to make sure they surrounded this on all sides. firefighters are telling me that it spread quickly in what is called a light well, sort of a void space near the stairs. there's metal flashing in there, and the fire got behind that flashing and spread. it actually started on the lowest level, they're telling me, and move
