that's where christie smith is live in oakland with latest details. what a sad scene, christie. >> reporter: good morning. homicide investigators just arrived on scene. they were briefed by the sergeant and then headed into this home where a 1-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man shot and killed. a father and son. the house is the one with the porch light on and the gate open the baby taken to children's hospital and pronounced dead there. the man died inside the home. a man and woman walked up in tears asking if their son and grandson were okay. they've been speaking with police this morning. it was just before 3:00 this morning, calls started coming in from ghormley street in brookfield village in east oakland. there were several people inside the home at the time. it's believed that the shooter fired into the rear of the home, possibly a bedroom of that 20-year-old. at this point, police say they have no suspect information, no arrest, and we are in touch with them. of course if we get any new information, we'll bring it to you. christie smith, "today

christie smith has the latest on this difficult on going investigation. christ christie, good morning. >> reporter: three teenagers were in that car behind me. this is the tree that they hit. you can see the fence behind it is knocked down. this is on el capitan drive. one of the teens died, and police tell us that school was actually going to start today in the area. the police chief says the accident happened just before 9:00 last night, that the driver was heading north on el capitan. for some reason lost control lost control of the car. this is an all residential area. i spoke with one man who said he heard the crash. police say everyone in the car was either 17 or 18 years old. a passenger in the car taken to san ramon regional hospital and died. what caused such a violent crash, though, still unknown. >> too early to tell. there's no obvious signs of anything. that's what our investigators will be working on to make sure they can pinpoint speeds and other things. there's nothing obvious such as cans of alcohol or anything like that. >> reporter: the

"today in the bay's" christie smith live at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station where trains are rolling through. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it sealed like both sides were making progress on the key issues like pensions and benefits over the weekend. in the end, it wasn't enough. governor jerry brown decided to step in with saech-day reprieve. we've been talking with commuters this morning, they are very relieved. they also tell us they are tired. they didn't get any sleep last night, wondering if the trains would be rolling. they say they're also tired of being held in limbo. we shot video of the trains rolling through west oakland into san francisco. it seems like the traffic is a little light, though it is still early this morning. at the request of b.a.r.t., the governor appoint add board to take a look into the stalled talks. what they'll do is hear from both sides and within seven days provide the governor with a report. during that time b.a.r.t.'s unions stay on the job. some of them angry that it had to come to this. b.a.r.t.'s board

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in mountain view where the 129th rescue wing took off for yosemite. a busy day ahead, christie. >> reporter: good morning. there is a massive effort under way to try and fight the rim fire more than 700 fire personnel involved. many from right here in the bay area. now, a "chronicle" reporter drove through there about 12 miles and tweeted out that the smoke is thicker than san francisco fog. so that's kind of what firefighters are dealing with up there as they try to get a handle on this. near yosemite the fire jumped from 2,500 acres to more than 11,000 and last count 0% contained. as you said a number of air national dpaguardsmen left to h. some of the 2500 structures threatened includes san jose's family camp and students and staff from maybeck high and berkeley, 110 staying there, safely back home. only 15 minutes to evacuate. lightning, they say, still a big concern. in dublin yesterday, 160 acres burned near camp parks. you may have seen the smoke. a smoke used during military exercise sparked it. reminder of the bone-dry conditions gr

"today in the bay's" christie smith has all the details. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, jon. warning or not, these demonstrators are still here this morning. i spoke with one man who says the issue is big enough in his opinion that he plans to stay put. despite the postal service giving notice that these folks need to move off the federal property. demonstrators at the berkeley post office on alston way near downtown say they were visited by postal inspectors on friday and given warnings specifically to those on the steps and those staying here in tents. they've been in front of the historic building they say for 11 days, upset it's one of many postal properties to be sold off. the problem, according to the postal inspectors is they don't want the tents on the steps or they don't want the signs that these folks have attached to the buildings. they say it's become a safety hazard for people getting by. one protester told me in his opinion it's important enough to keep on fighting. >> the berkeley post office has been here

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live by the crash scene in danville with the latest on the on going investigation. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you jon. i spoke with one neighbor briefly this morning. he says he heard the crash. it was very loud and he knew right away that something was wrong. this is where the driver lost control, slammed into the tree there and then went right through the fence. three teenagers inside of the car. a 16-year-old boy has died. as you said, today, the first day of school in the area. that 16-year-old boy we're told was the passenger in the right front of the car. here is what we know. it was around 8:50 last night. the car was headed north on el capitan when the car suddenly spun out and hit a tree on the right passenger side. the 16-year-old was taken to san ramon regional medical center where he was pronounced dead. the 17-year-old driver suffered broken ribs. the other 16-year-old passenger suffered a broken leg. >> too early today. no obvious signs of anything. that's what our investigators will be working on to make s

nbc bay area's christie smith is live in danville right now with more from a community simply in shock. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. it is the first day of school and certainly a sad one here at san ramon valley high school. three seniors riding in a car last night, there was a crash and one of them died. now, what should have started as very happy day here actually started with a moment of silence for the students at around 9:00 this morning and the heartbreaking announcement this morning, flowers and a sign are up, actually, on el capitan and that's where the accident site was for 17-year-old robert orlando. he was the senior here. this morning, students arrived to find grief counselors on campus. many tell us that they actually heard the grim news on social media late last night or this morning that orlando was a passenger in a car last night, about 9:00, with two other seniors at the school, when the driver on clarridge and el capitan lost control for some reason, hit a tree and a fence. the car spun out, hitting the passenger side. the two other teens,

nbc bay area's christie smith joins us live in oakland with the very latest on the b.a.r.t. bor talks. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, marla. this is the first time both sides have sat down at the bargaining table as governor brown stepped in to help avert a strike. since then, we have learned that both sides are as much as $100 million apart in trying to reach an agreement, a huge gap that negotiators for b.a.r.t.'s union and the transit agency will somehow try to bridge by sunday night. that's the new deadline. both sides headed back into the caltrans building in oakland as they have done before. they did that this morning. unions also made their presence known at the b.a.r.t. board meeting this morning. just yesterday, management and unions testified before a panel commissioned by governor brown to try and determine if he should order a 60-day cooling off period to keep trains running at least through october. b.a.r.t.'s unions said its offer was -- b.a.r.t. said its offer was $100 million less over four years than what the unions put up but a uni

nbc bay area's christie smith is live on the bay bridge with how they are doing so far. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. big changes in just 24 hours, basically, the paving work leading um to the toll plaza, that is eventually done. crews working on it this morning. we were able to take a drive across the new eastern span and really starting to see it come together on the connectors, both in oakland and at yorba buena island. this morning, crews were out at the toll plaza, finishing up some of that paving work that they had been starting just yesterday. they are even starting to mark where the lanes will be put into place, that is the striping work that still needs to be done. up on the west bound approach, where the bike path will eventually go in, a huge section in the way, that is knocked down this morning, 90% of the concrete roadway on the thousand-foot section is gone. the entire section will be out of the way, they say, by sunday. on the 6.4 billion dollar span, parts of the old bridge go awake the sweeping views are becoming more and more pronounced. one

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the command post. christie, a person of interest linked to sandra coke is in custody right now. so far he's not being named a suspect in their disappearance. what do you know about this? >> good morning to you. i can tell you the search does ramp up here in about two hours at the solana county fairgrou s fairgrounds. this is right near six flags. as you said, investigators haven't said exactly why they chose to search this area. there is a person of interest in the case who has ties to sandra coke's background. he is a registered sex offender. randy alana was arrested tuesday on an unrelated parole violation, but is being questioned in coke's disappearance. his prior convictions include rape and kidnapping. police say he knew coke. they actually dated more than 20 years ago. coke was last seen on sunday when she said she was going to look into a tip about her missing dog. her car was discovered two days later on 32nd street. coke is a criminal defense investigator. oakland police and major crimes homici

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the west oakland b.a.r.t. station where riders are bracing for packed train cars. good morning, christie. >> good morning to you. we were at macarthur this morning. we moved to west oakland. i have to tell you the west oakland station is pretty busy considering the hour. we come here to talk with people and normally we don't see much activity until later. i spoke with a station agent saying they're getting more people talking about prices, ticket pritss, how to get around on b.a.r.t. it seemed there were more first-time riders out this morning all because the bay bridge is, of course, closed. this is day one of the five-day closure in preparation for the opening of the new eastern span on tuesday. 280,000 commuters normally use the bay bridge each day. so today all the planning the use the ferries, b.a.r.t., ac transit, all of them offering extra service. today it will all be put to the test. >> our department changed our working hours to 4:00 a.m. to accommodate the delay. my best alternative is going to be ta

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san mateo county which has already sent crews down to help fight the wildfire. christie, this is just one bay area agency sending firefighters out to help out at yosemite. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. i wish i had better news for you. but the rim fire has jumped a containment line and seems to be growing in nearly every direction. as you said, bay area firefighters are helping out. alameda county sent about 22 firefighters from throughout the county. also san mateo county office of emergency services, their fire department sent out crews, and also within the last hour the berkeley firehxñ department say they sent one team to the rim fire. nearly 1,000 firefighters trying to fight this stubborn fire near yosemite by highway 120. the board of supervisors is asking governor brown to declare a state of emergency. this started saturday. at last count more than 16,000 acres burned, only about 5% containment. a massive, smokey fire that jumped the line near the firefighters' base camp. nine structures burned, 2500 threatened. deputies

christie is smith is live in san leandro with more on what happened. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the rim fire has literally exploded overnight. i had to check the numbers twice to make sure they were accurate. it jumped by 38,000 acres this morning since the last count yesterday but bay area firefighters, they continue to answer the call. this morning, the al meet da county fire department sent another strike team, made up of 22 firefighters, there are actually now three strike teams, two local and one office of emergency services strike team from the bay area helping out now. more than 1300 firefighters, now just 2% contained that's down from 5% earlier. it is a massive, smoky fire that's spreading to the southeast edge of highway 120 near yosemite and grove land. suppression is expected to improve with the help of military-type aircraft. it's also much cooler now, but the fire jumped at containment line near the firefighters' base camp. nine structures burned. the sheriff's department advising resident notice community of pine mountain l

. >>> "today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live from the scene with details. morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, laura. i just spoke with one of the organizers and he says he was here when more than a dozen postal inspectors and postal police came here and gave notice to everyone out front of the berkeley post office on alston way that had been camped out that they would have to leave. he said that since then they've made sure that they were not blocking access to doorways with their tents, and he says basically they decided they're staying put. he estimates that about 25 people are still left after on friday they got notice to go away. he says a couple of them did go, but others filtered back in. they are from the group save the berkeley post office. they've been camped out here since july 27th, upset with plans to sell the post office off and many more like it. it's a historic building, about 57,000 square feet. the postal inspector says they can't put signs up on the building or keep tents out on the steps, that it is a safety hazard. one proteste
