"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in oakland with the last-minute touches crews are putting on the brand new span. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, marla. caltrans has been saying all along the newbridge is it will open 5:00 a.m. tuesday. the good news is there are no snags, no surprises. there's talk it could open a little earlier than that. right now a bridge spokesperson is saying it's just too early to say. what we can tell you is there was a lot of progress over the weekend. basically the striping and paving work near the toll plaza is done. the thousand foot section of roadway on the east side is removed and now sections of the pedestrian bicycle path are being lowered into place. lit be about 15 1/2 feet wide. that's wide enough to accommodate bikes and pedestrians. also it's an extension of the bay trail which extends down to emeryville, berkeley and oakland. it opened noon tuesday. it will go just past the new suspension part. the old bridge still needs to be demolished in that area. >> it would be nice if they would get a bike lane that goes all t

christie smith is live at the home on 18th avenue in san francisco's sunset district. ghters had a hard time getting into the house to try to battle the flames. >> reporter: they did. and that's because a lot of these homes have the security gate out front so they had to actually break that down to get in so they say that took an extra three minutes or so. firefighters have seen a lot but they say that this is really a difficult situation for them. especially considering what happened to that little toddler. they say it appears she was up out of her bed, that smoke detectors were blaring going off when they arrived so they say it's probably that she was trying to get away from what was going on. her grandfather was up too and found about 30 feet away. right now firefighters are going through the home trying to figure out how this started but they are focusing on a downstairs in-law area where the girl's father was sleeping. he apparently had a cold or flu and the family decided he should sleep down there so she wouldn't get sick. that's where they believe the fire start

today in the bay's christie smith is live in oakland with an update on the finishing touches that crews are putting on the brand new span. christie, good morning. >> good morning, marla. kind ofd hard to believe that the earthquake that damaged the old bay bridge in the first place happened 24 years ago. tomorrow for the first time delivers will finally be able to drive on the new span. there was talk of it possibly opening before 5:00 tuesday morning. a bridge spokesperson says it's just too early to say that yet. but as of sunday, about 80% of the final work on the $6.4 billion span that was built to be more seismically safe is done. the roadway connector to jer ba buena island and treasure island is completed. contractors continue to grind up pieces of the old bridge to make room for a bike and pedestrian pathway. that will be available tuesday at noon. >>> this is a continuation of the bay trail which extends down the shorelines of echlry ville and berkeley and oakland. we really wanted it to tie into the natural setting of that part of the bike path. >> for now it will only go just

. >> christie smith joining us live from the scene. christie, we're hearing you just learned two people have died including a young girl there? >> reporter: yes. i spoke with the assistant division chief a couple minutes ago. he says a father in his 30s has passed away along with a 2 1/2-year-old child. both of them transported to the hospital but sadly didn't make it. i want to step aside so you can see what's going on here this morning. firefighters inside of this third rowhouse on 18th avenue. this started around 1:30 this morning. a two-alarm fire. one of the challenges they had right away, there were two, is that they didn't get the right address, they got one down the street and the second is there was a large security gate in front of the home. they say that the mom inside the home, there were a number of people, the mom inside had just gotten home about 11:00 from work. she says her husband was downstairs sleeping, there was also the child in the home and a grandfather. she smelled smoke, it was late, she had gotten up to get so

christie smith just got to the scene. what can you tell us. >> reporter: a had a chance to talk to the chief for alameda county and fire, neighbors were knocking on the trailer, trying to weak the person up but it was too late. firefighters found this trailer that you see behind me, i'm going to step aside, you can see the very top of this, they call this trailer number one at a mobile home park here on grand avenue. they say when they arrived it was fully involved, there was smoke and flames coming from the trailer itself. when they got inside, they found one person deceased at this point. firefighters don't know if it's a male or a female. but they say heavy smoke and flames pouring out of it. we saw them inside again spraying water on it. they done know if the person was asleep or trapped or why they weren't able to get out. that will all be part of their investigation. at this point, the cause is still under investigation. they think there was one person inside. reporting live in san leandro, christie smith, "today in

reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> christie, appreciate the update. thank you. as we've mentioned, there are about 800,000 federal employees who could be furloughed. california, for the record, has just under 170,000 federal employees. locally, this means nasa ames research center could close during the government shutdown. they say they cannot comment specifically on which employees would be affected by the potential shutdown. we spoke to the president of the ames federal employees union who says, quote, starting tuesday morning short of a miracle, 95% of ames employees, more than 1,000, will be locked out and their families will be without that critical paycheck for some period of time. we also know all extra curricular activities at moffitt field would be shutdown. we found an announcement on the website for the golf club. it says, a government shutdown would keep the golf course, business office, and cafe all closed. >> it is unclear, though, if the government shutdown would affect anyone associated with the ongoing spacecraft mission. it's on tr

christie smith live at the berkeley campus with new details how the warning system would work. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. state lawmakers are considering this bill. they are going to talk about it today and basically it would direct the state office of emergency services to work with a number of agencies including uc-berkeley to come up with an early warning system for earthquakes. basically giving people 30-second warning or more that an earthquake was imminent. technology to detect how strong the quake might be and trigger an alert. the bill is offered by senator alex. right now scientists can estimate the risk of a quake but they are trying to hammer down ways to determine when a quake might strike. the usgs has been developing a system on a small scale with the state. federal dollars aren't there yet for construction as it stands. one scotts valley company seismic warning system says it

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in san leandro where investigators are looking for a cause. >> reporter: i just had a chance to speak with a neighbor at the trailer park. it was around 3:30 in the morning. she started smelling smoke and it just kept getting stronger and stronger. she knew something was wrong. she went outside with another neighbor and they saw smoke coming from a trailer in the front of this trailer park. they believe that an elderly woman was inside. they tell me they banged on the windows and doors. they asked if she was okay and they heard a voice. she said, no, i'm not okay. they say they broke windows and that's when smoke poured out of the trailer. they say they tried the door but it was locked, they couldn't get in. when they did break the door open, it was hard to get inside, there was boxes and paper and other things blocking their way. they didn't hear from that woman again. of course, they say they were also calling 911, trying to get firefighters here. firefighters say when they arrived, they found smoke and flames pouring out and in fact, the n

it's also where christie smith is live at the scene with new details on this fire. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, jon. neighbors say this was a very fast-moving fire. they were actually asleep at the time and firefighters showed up, they say, with police and started banging on their door. i spoke with firefighters. what they tell me is that when they arrived there was basically flames blowing out of the third floor of this apartment building here on oregon street. they say right away they learned that one person was unaccounted for. they found that person and now the coroner was on scene but firefighters telling us notification hasn't been given so they are not being very specific on that yet. on the third floor they tell us there was a metal door so difficult to get in. started about with 1:30 this morning. this is on oregon street, there are several units in this building. i spoke with one neighbor. she believes that the man that was in question here was in his 50s, a smoker, that he burned candles sometimes, that he had a somewhat eccentric perso

christie smith is live at sfo now. this training is very valuable, especially in the wake of a asiana crash. >> absolutely. this is with new equipment for first responders here at sfo. as you cede big training exercise in the wake of that asiana crash here at sfo this summer. these exercises help first responders prepare for disasters, they practice aircraft fire fighting, pilot extrication and evacuation. it's something that they do regularly but today, firefighters, paramedics and emts do these with the marine corps new mv-22 osprey aircraft. it takes off and lands like a helicopter but has the capability to fly out like a plane. it would be used for humanitarian and disaster situations. this happens as asiana airlines whose plane went down in july says it will boost pilot training and start an outside review of safety standards. pilots will get more time in flight simulators to prepare for airports that don't have guidance systems. the training is at 9:00 this morning at the coast guard station here at sfo. live at

christie smith live at o.co coliseum.'s kind of dealing with a sewer leak. >> reporter: good morning to you. i'm glad i don't smell anything out here. you have a winning team that's inching toward the postseason and they have plumbing problems here at the coliseum. they had a sewage leak enter the a's dugout during the seventh inning last night. a sweet victory that didn't smell too good over the angels. players need bats, balls, buckets and boots to deal with what's going on here. this backup came from a bathroom nearby but it wasn't half as bad as the sewage leak in june that spilled into both clubhouses. it is not just sewage but the seats. owner, lou wolf, wonders why fans don't fill them up in the regular season. they sold out for potential games in the season for hours. they decided to remove the upper level blocks to allow more fans in. he told "usa today," there's something wrong here. you would think that with our lead, people would want to come out, count down the magic numbers and all that stuff. they say a blo

christie smith, "today in the bay." >> thank you. meantime, the south bay san jose crews worked late into the night cap a water main break on lemoyne way. crews say water was shut off to homes to the north. the san jose water company fixed the problem but at this point no word on what caused it. >> the 49ers new stadium is running short on parking spaces, now the team is trying to figure out how to fix it. a live look at the stadium this morning, building going on, the team says it's about 5,000 parking spaces short of its goal. right now the team is looking at leasting a youth soccer complex next to the stadium for additional parking. that could impact the nature preserve near by. parents fear the team will end up paving over soccer fields with the idea of building new fields closer to the preserve. it's home to a butterfly garden and indian burial ground. environmentalists don't want it turned into soccer fields and officials urge people to stay calm because there is no final decision on the issue yet. >> a lot of talk around 9ers

christie smith live at the scene.ing a pretty frightening scene. >> reporter: yeah, it was. fortunately, everyone is safe, though. and firefighters just cleared out, now some of the residents have a chance to pick through, see the damage and see if anything can be salvaged after a big fire ripped through two buildings, started in this blue victorian and spread from there. started at around 3:30 this morning. they say it was a duplex and a four-plex that burned. they smelled smoke coming from a laundry room in the rear and heard crackling sounds. we could see smoke and flames. you could see the smoke from the freeway. this victorian building. because they were so close together, firefighters say they quickly called in a third alarm. one neighbor was watching tv when he heard what he thought was gun fire, it was popping sounds from the fire. he heard a woman screaming she was trapped but he ran to kick the door in. >> my friend kenny, he came and helped. she's screaming running down the stairs. kenny says my house is on

"today in the bay's" christie smith is on scene. christie, what's the damage out there? you said about eight cars damaged in the flames? >> reporter: eight cars and a couple of buildings, too. it's pretty bad. a fire investigator just arrived on scene. it was only within the last 30 minutes or so that they were even able to get close enough to take a look around which is what he's going to be able to do this morning because this fire was just so intense. investigators are telling us that when they arrived, flames were 30 feet high, reaching up to the power lines outside of this used car lot. the fire started about 3:15 and spread very quickly. there are three buildings on the property. there's the car lot, an office and also a residence on the side here. still firefighters are saying they had to be very defensive about this, spray water from the outside because the power lines were catching fire, they were arcing, concern they might fall on the firefighters. they had to stay back, call pg&e out. they finally got in to knock it down. i just spoke with a battalion chief ab

christie smith is live at the scene in the bayview district. saw police put the suspect in handcuffs. >> reporter: yeah, this whole thing happened really fast and what a morning. i wanted to start by saying that the bank in question here is still behind crime scene tape this morning. i guess you could call this a bungled burglary. police checking rooftops for a suspect and suddenly he fell through the roof into an apartment. san francisco police found the man a little shaken up and took him into custody. put him in the back of a patrol car. this started around 4:00 in the morning with a bank of america security system on san bruno avenue. picked up an image of someone in the bank, dark clothes and a crow bar in hand. police searched for the guy, couldn't find him. then called the san francisco fire department. they brought a ladder truck to check those rooftops. they quickly spotted a man on the third roof that they checked and as he was putting his hands up, well, suddenly a section of the roof gave way and he fell through. >> there was a hole

christie smith is live at the campus where there is a growing memorial honoring the life of the young man lost. christie, just a difficult morning all the way around. >> reporter: good morning to you. this is bound to be a very difficult day for students at this high school, some of them found out about the death of kevin late friday morning, some came out over the weekend to pay their respects at the crash site. a lot of them didn't know and may be finding out for the first time this morning. there will be grief counselors here to help the students who are coming in to process what has happened here. actually, went over to the crash site this morning and this weekend some students came out there. that's at pine and golf street where kevin san's picture is on a poster that friends have signed. a woman has been arrested ons suspicion of vehicular manslaughter for allegedly crashing into the minivan san was riding in. police told us that she was going up to 80 miles an hour and blew past police, a bus and through three intersections when she rear ended the minivan causing both cars to r

christie smith is live by the school campus with details of a memorial dedicated to a young man lost so soon. christie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. that's over at the crash site but for some students they actually found bout the death of their classmate kevin san after the crash on friday. for many this will be the first time for them finding out when they come to school today. so as you said, grief counselors will be here to help the students deal with it. i can tell you that we stopped this morning over at the crash site where flowers and candles were left there along with photos of kevin san, friends left condolence notes and described him as warm and friendly, a good friend to have. san was killed friday morning when an suv he was in, that was slammed into or minivan was slammed into by an suv, he was riding in that with his mom and sister and they were seriously injured. he was killed. police say the driver, a woman, 58, has been booked on vehicular manslaughter charges. they don't think, though, that drugs or alcohol were involved. police say that the car was

"today in the bay's" christie smith joins us live from that location. have they officially been evicted yet? >> good morning to you, marla. so far, no eviction activity. we haven't seen any sheriff deputies out here at all. in theo, it could happen at any moment on a family who has been living here for 34 years raising their family in a two-bedroom apartment. they say that the building's new owner came in and told them, look, you are being evicted under something called the ellis act. they say they are standing their ground. gum gi lee says, no, she is standing up to a system that puts developers over people. the 74-year-old says she has raised seven kids with her husband in a two-bedroom, rent-controlled apartment here on jackson street. she says she can't afford the one-bedrooms, what they are going for now, about $2,000 a month in this area, specially those close to her disabled daughter's school and doctors. this law allows property owners to clear a building with buyouts. the rental units are supposed to be fixed up and put back on the market but t

nbc bay area christy smith is live in san francisco with new before and after video of the area. i'm sure it's a stark difference. christy. >> absolutely. you know, we've all seen those devastating images of the rim fire burning near yosemite, but now a group here in san francisco is pointing out that 96% of what burned burned in one particular watershed. they're concerned there won't be enough funding in the restoration of the aftermath of the fire, and just a short time ago they announced a rim fire recovery campaign and shared a video around the river area taken after they say the fear had moved through, saying it really underscores the widespread damage to an area that is used by so many here in the bay area for recreation and they say they're trying to help the local economy there. they say the fire burned through about 40 miles of forest land along the river leaving the wrar ripe for erosion. they're calling on senators boxer and feinstein to make sure there's enough funding to go around for restoration. >> locally are you the business and the economic interest and sonora, a

"today in the bay's" christie smith at the west oakland b.a.r.t.erry. b.a.r.t. was certainly the go-to service during the bay bridge closure, kept the bay area moving 24 hours a day. now b.a.r.t. is saying there is a price to pay for pushing their trains to run around the clock, something they normally don't do. the trains were packed with riders during that closure. now at least a dozen rail cars are being yanked from service for maintenance. problems doubled over the weekend, things like doors not opening, overheating, even plain old stuck windshield wipers. for b.a.r.t. it kind of underscores why they don't normally run 24 hours day. crews need to work on the trains when the system is down, between midnight and 4:00 a.m. other agencies have multiple train tracks. they can work on one set and work on the other. they can run 24-7. b.a.r.t. apparently has to power down the third rail for safety to work on it. one regular rider this morning, he sees this whole issue a little differently. >> you do see them occasionally. i don't think it should be a

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the west oakland b.a.r.t.tails to get the trains back on track. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, march los angeles train doors sticking, trains overheating. that's what b.a.r.t. says it's dealing with after it ran 24 hours a day during the bay bridge closure for five days. now we're learning the downside of that. b.a.r.t. is saying at least a dozen rail cars will have to be pulled out of service for maintenance and repair work. during the five-day closure trains were full, the system a real work horse that kept the bay area moving. an extra 380,000 trips moving at the time. the maintenance, b.a.r.t. managers say it can't run all night. other large public transit agencies have multiple tracks to do, run trains at the same time. a third rail would have to be shut for the work to go on. i smoke with one b.a.r.t. ride who are has no patience for all this. >> you do see them occasionally. i don't think it should be a major problem. i think they should be prepared to run 24 hours a day as opposed to running

. >> christie smith is live in clayton. many are trying to seek refuge as the fires burn close to the homes. what can you tell us out there? >> reporter: well, i can tell you we just arrived at the library on clayton road, the evacuation is up and running. i spoke with the red cross and they tell me they have one couple that arrived in their car, trying to sleep it off with their dogs. they are ready for more people to come in and help. they think a lot of the people who did evacuate are probably staying with family and friends. from where i'm sitting i can see smoke and orange glo going on up in the hills. the fire burned about 1500 acres. because of the hazard, evacuations were ordered to include trail ride road, east trail, upper trail, and lower trail road. there are 24 homes in that area. fire was reported yesterday off of morgan territory road and triggered evacuations along oak hill lane and curry canyon. we spoke with residents, they saw the fires creeping toward their home, very scary. a chopper up above dropped wa

nbc bay area christy smith is live in pleasanton now, and says, christy, despite the new developments, investigators still haven't made any arrests. >> no, they deputy give out a whole lot of information this morning, but they did tell us that 51-year-old david lamont is still in a coma in a hospital here in the east bay unable to speak after that brutal attack that he suffered over the weekend. they do tell us that they are questioning a number of juvenile persons of interest that they say no one has been arrested or detained. brutal beating of david lamont was reported just after midnight saturday we went to check out loud noses where he lived on middlon place. there were teens he was just going to ask to keep it down. he is the father of two teenagers himself who owns a marketing company. still hospitalized at eden medical center. this morning police told us the persons of interest, but they won't say how many they have, and it's unclear how many are even involved in this attack. when a number of teens are in communication with pleasanton police. earlier we spoke with his wife on t

nbc bay area's christy smith is live right now in union city with much more on a very touching tributeristy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, the service just wrapped up a couple of minutes ago, and there are a number of family members here, including the family of pilot jason dahl. i spoke with the sister and also spoke with her husband. what they're saying is that over the years the sorrow has disbursed, but on this tragic day the memories come rushing back. they tried to fight hijackers before it crashed. the flight was bound for san francisco, and that fact meant veteran michael emerson to build a memorial here in union city in 2007. since then he has gone on to credit many more. the family says that pilot jason first became interested in flying when he was just 13 years old. the san jose native, of course, life was cut short on september 11th. each stone monument has a name, age, and the person's hometown. dahl's sister says it's important to be able to come right back here. >> there are some things -- there's a lot of, you know, people that were from this are

nbc bay area's christy smith is live at the scene near pine and goff now with the latest details. christy, good morning. >> good morning to you, marla and john. you know, this crash was so violent that it's hard to tell that there are even two cars there across the street. on the right a minivan. a mom and her two kids were inside. the top actually had to be cut open with the jaws of life to get them out. on the other side a silver car that police say rammed into the minivan at up to 80 miles an hour. one witness described the sound. >> like a bomb. like an explosion. i have heard car wreck brz, but you could tell this had weight to it. you could tell it was really serious. >> a teenage boy, 17, who was in that minivan was killed. police say the mom and sister suffered very serious injuries. this started around 6:50 this morning. patrol officers actually saw this silver car, an suv, blow right past them through two intersections, and then around a bus before hitting the minivan so hard that it rolled and the suv rolled too here at pine and golf street. a delivery man with three peo

christy smith is live in walnut creek where horses have been taken out of harm's way as well. hristy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. people are evacuating, and they're taking their animals right along with them. we're here in walnut creek, just a couple miles away from the fire. the equestrian center here opened up very quickly to help people who needed to get their horses out. also, the red cross evacuation center on clayton road, that's open. about 100 homes evacuated. they also expanded the evacuation area overnight. it was quiet there except for one couple that staid overnight in the parking lot at the community library. that's where the red cross is set up. the couple with their rescue dogs in just the one car. the man says he was at work, his wife was at home, and she was told to leave and she did. a group called angels for miniature horses rescue volunteered to open up the equestrian center here. they say that the smoke can certainly spook horses, so they wanted to offer a place to go. so far they've got six horses out here. one horse owner had to rush ho

nbc christy smith joining us live from the scene right now. checking out the investigation. at this point do officials have any idea what caused this? >> well, there are a number of theories out there, but it's still under investigation, but, boy, what a morning here. fortunately, no one was on that at the time. it took two and a half hours to get this window washing scaffolding back up and over the edge, but it was done safely this morning after a man scaled the side of the building, but it was right there near the top hanging during the morning rush. >> morning workers couldn't stop staring and snapping cell phone pictures. there it was, a window washing rig dangling from a san francisco high-rise. >> everybody was looking up. i thought maybe something worse. i mean, this is worse, but still, fortunately, there's nobody on it. a little shocking, you know? ri. no one hurt. no one on it. firefighters closed battery street at clay and evacuated three floors below. >> the thing weighs almost 2,000 pounds. i talked to the guy who was actually the engineer who is in charge of it
