"today in the bay's" christie smith is live in oakland with the last-minute touches crews are putting on the brand new span. good morning, christie. >> reporter: good morning, marla. caltrans has been saying all along the newbridge is it will open 5:00 a.m. tuesday. the good news is there are no snags, no surprises. there's talk it could open a little earlier than that. right now a bridge spokesperson is saying it's just too early to say. what we can tell you is there was a lot of progress over the weekend. basically the striping and paving work near the toll plaza is done. the thousand foot section of roadway on the east side is removed and now sections of the pedestrian bicycle path are being lowered into place. lit be about 15 1/2 feet wide. that's wide enough to accommodate bikes and pedestrians. also it's an extension of the bay trail which extends down to emeryville, berkeley and oakland. it opened noon tuesday. it will go just past the new suspension part. the old bridge still needs to be demolished in that area. >> it would be nice if they would get a bike lane that goes all t

christie smith is live at the home on 18th avenue in san francisco's sunset district. ghters had a hard time getting into the house to try to battle the flames. >> reporter: they did. and that's because a lot of these homes have the security gate out front so they had to actually break that down to get in so they say that took an extra three minutes or so. firefighters have seen a lot but they say that this is really a difficult situation for them. especially considering what happened to that little toddler. they say it appears she was up out of her bed, that smoke detectors were blaring going off when they arrived so they say it's probably that she was trying to get away from what was going on. her grandfather was up too and found about 30 feet away. right now firefighters are going through the home trying to figure out how this started but they are focusing on a downstairs in-law area where the girl's father was sleeping. he apparently had a cold or flu and the family decided he should sleep down there so she wouldn't get sick. that's where they believe the fire start

"today in the bay's" christie smith is live at the west oakland b.a.r.t.tails to get the trains back on track. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, march los angeles train doors sticking, trains overheating. that's what b.a.r.t. says it's dealing with after it ran 24 hours a day during the bay bridge closure for five days. now we're learning the downside of that. b.a.r.t. is saying at least a dozen rail cars will have to be pulled out of service for maintenance and repair work. during the five-day closure trains were full, the system a real work horse that kept the bay area moving. an extra 380,000 trips moving at the time. the maintenance, b.a.r.t. managers say it can't run all night. other large public transit agencies have multiple tracks to do, run trains at the same time. a third rail would have to be shut for the work to go on. i smoke with one b.a.r.t. ride who are has no patience for all this. >> you do see them occasionally. i don't think it should be a major problem. i think they should be prepared to run 24 hours a day as opposed to running

christy smith is live in walnut creek where horses have been taken out of harm's way as well. hristy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, john. people are evacuating, and they're taking their animals right along with them. we're here in walnut creek, just a couple miles away from the fire. the equestrian center here opened up very quickly to help people who needed to get their horses out. also, the red cross evacuation center on clayton road, that's open. about 100 homes evacuated. they also expanded the evacuation area overnight. it was quiet there except for one couple that staid overnight in the parking lot at the community library. that's where the red cross is set up. the couple with their rescue dogs in just the one car. the man says he was at work, his wife was at home, and she was told to leave and she did. a group called angels for miniature horses rescue volunteered to open up the equestrian center here. they say that the smoke can certainly spook horses, so they wanted to offer a place to go. so far they've got six horses out here. one horse owner had to rush ho
