christie smith joins us live. the alleged attack happened right there on school campus. >> good morning to you about lunchtime and the mom was arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse and she came to the school midday apparently looking for what she thought was her daughter's bully. this isn't all of it a charter school here in santa rosa and found her 12-year-old son and asked to point out this boy who bullied her daughter. she then went up to this boy in front of other kids and grabbed him by the neck and then demanded that he stop the bullying behavior. the boy apparently ran in to tell adults on campus who then took pictures of what they say were marks on the boy's neck. no adult apparentlyc conferenrontation and she did n check out at the office before she arrived, which usually adults are required to do. she has been released on $30,000 bail, a letter, we're told, is being drafted from the district to parents to be sent home today to let them know what happened. she is due in court on thursday. reporting

"today in the bay" christie smith live in concord and, christie, this is my least favorite story as a reporter. it is getting warmer and the pools are opening. how is the baby? >> good morning to you. the latest information that we have is that the baby is in stable condition but very scary for one family and, unfortunately, the kind of thing you do hear about when the weather heats up as it is expected to do this week. concord police were among the first to arrive at a home on deckert court at 6:15 yesterday and found a baby unresponsive being cared for by family members. an initial report that a baby drowned in a backyard swiming pool and police started life-saving cpr until paramedics could arrive minutes later and the baby was taken initially for treatment and may have been transferred to a second hospital. of course, water safety, something that we really think about as we head into the 90s this week. soaring temperatures. children and families trying to cool off. may get so warm in some places that cooling centers may even open up. but, again, the latest information that we have

christie smith joins us live in santa rosa. christie, deputies say this happened on campus. >> good morning, they do. they say it happened at the noontime hour on friday. bullying is something that has been in the news and something schools have been trying to deal with, but rarely does it take this type of twist. a mom is accused of coming here to this charter school in santa rosa and confronting the student that she believed was her daughter's bully and then grabbing that student by the throat. now, sonoma county sheriff deputies say they took this report friday afternoon at olivet elementary school where staff told them that a student was assaulted by a parent. investigators say around lunchtime that 30-year-old came to the school without checking in at the office, which is something oftentimes parent are asked to do first. she say then she went it her son to point out this student, and she then confronted this student, an 11-year-old about bullying her 10-year-old daughter and then allegedly grabbed this 11-year-old boy by t

"today in the bay" christie smith joins us live in oakland. christie, why has an amber alert not been issued? >> that's a good question. we have calls into oakland police and they're trying to figure out if these circumstances fit the criteria for calling for an amber alert, but they haven't said exactly what the circumstances are. but it is really disturbing. we're talking about nearly 12 hours since the 7-year-old girl was last seen near her home here in east oakland. oakland police were parked out front and 7-year-old kianna was last seen yesterday around 6:00 p.m. brown hair and brown eyes and last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes. oakland police did release this information to us overnight. earlier two patrol cars were parked at the home. but, of course, there are many questions like you said. one of them, of course, what was she doing when she was last seen, was there a car involved? that is one of the things that they're talking about this morning and would help fit the criteria for an amber alert. oakland po

christie smith joins us live this morning. closed just on certain weekends, christie?> good morning to you. closed on certain weekends during the summer, the peak of the tourist season. we took a drive this morning, it is fun, but quite the white knuckle drive. one woman nearby said she was almost hit by someone not paying attention as they were flied down crooked lombard street. so, for four weekends this summer between june 21 and july 13th lombard plus the next block up may be closed to cars and also the fourth of july it would be closed. that falls on a friday this year. the neighbors say it's the exhaust, the lines of traffic, cars trying to get through, bikes, even people on ska skateboards trying to make it down lombard streets. just a little too much. the municipal transportation agency looking at an airport. between larkin and leavenworth. tourists not too happy about this, but this is one of their quick stops. only two minutes with a huge payoff. beautiful views once you get past that wait at the top. now, they're going to just look at this as a temporary thi

"today in the bay" christie smith where a construction has been going on for more than a year now. good morning, christie. >> more than a year, that's right. the founder of the melt says it was in january of this year, that's when a lot of the dust and debris, construction came right to the front door here and that didn't make for a very happy experience for their customers. and, according to "the daily jou journal" they just decided to shut their doors temporarily while this construction is going on. now a partial closure at the intersection of prime rose and el camino as part of the 16-month beautification project that is going on here in burling game and that's expected to bring in more friendly features for walkers, big wide sidewalks, more landscaping space for outdoor dining, that sort of thing. overall, a much more pleasant experience. the melt opened its doors in october of 2012 but now they're saying on tuesday they'll temporarily turn off the grill and wait this project out because it is an unwelcome environment for customers. their customers can kngo to oth melt shops. th

christie smith joins us live in redwood city some of the areas getting some of that $120 million donation. great news, christie. >> good morning to you and happy friday. what a gift, $120 million a pledge to struggling bay area schools. almost sounds like some of the lottery wins we have been reporting here in the bay area. facebook ceo mark zuckerberg and his wife made charitable donations before. in his announcement zuckerberg said that the world's most innovative communities should not also be home for struggling public schools. he did praise educators and also pointed out the challenge they face with the resources that they're given. some of this $120 million over the next five years will go to new public and charter schools, equipment training and programs, technology and connectivity in the schools and this will go in the ravenswood, redwood city school districts and san francisco schools that have a demonstrated need. as you can imagine the superintendent in these districts have already spoken out expressing how grateful they are. reporting live in redwood city, christie smith, "to

christie smith joins us with details about how cal trans claims to fix this new problem, christie. >> good morning, scott. happy friday. this time we're talking about steel rods that have shifted since they were installed. just the latest issue that popped up on this new $6.4 billion bay bridge, that according to "the chronicle" this morning. engineers say more than 200 rods can actually move towards sharp edge plates in the event of an earthquake, possibly damaging the eastern span's main cable. this latest concern came to light fairly recently within the past couple of months. what they're saying is that when cal trans inspected the rods they held the mile-long cable in place but the rods have moved and now no extra wiggle room needed between them and the steel reinforcement plate. this isn't the first issue here in 2013, 32 high-strength rods failed and it was also brought to light that there were leaks when it rains. repairs are in the works now for this latest situation. they may come from simply trying to center the fasteners, again, or create bigger gaps for more wiggle room in

christie smith joins us live in san francisco and christie, depite td despite the horrifying scene, the victim will survive. >> we did get an update from san francisco police and they are telling us despite a very serious head injury, this man is still in critical condition but it does appear he is going to survive his injuries after being trapped under that car that you see right there. now, police are telling us the information they're now getting is that this man may have been milling around this gas station overnight before this accident. and got into some sort of exchange with two men who arrived here in that same car at about 3:30 this morning. they came here because they had a flat tire. this is on 24th and erie, a chevron station. here's where it gets confusing. police say for some reason they can't explain, this man actually laid down near the car. >> him and the passenger were attempting to change the tire of the vehicle. and at that point the victim had some interaction with both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle. i'm not sure what the interaction was. >> now, inves

"today in the bay" christie smith joins us in san francisco where the same thing happened just a few months ago. they can't seem to catch who's doing it, christie. >> good morning to you. this time we're talking about a different neighborhood. it happened in the sunset district where we are this morning. a dog walker found meatballs on a paper plate right around here. they were stuffed and this is near walking paths around the res voyeur. popular spot for people who walk their dog and that's what san francisco police are looking in into. no pets got sick from this latest incident but people very upset this happened again. this time at 24th and ortegga. dozens of tainted meatballs were found near the twin peaks neighborhood. a retriever got sick and that dog was able to make it to the vet in time to recover but in july much different story. a docson died after getting a hold of meatballs. the neighborhood that we're talking about the sunset, diamond heights and twin peaks. police have not found the person responsible in any of these incidents but a $5,000 reward is being offered for in

christie smith is live. we heard the tsa inspected that airport just three weeks ago. >> that's right. sjc was found to be in compliance with the rules for it perimeter security but senator barbara boxer questioned how could that be and said what happened next here was a nightmare. what if it was someone else and not just a 15-year-old who was apparently just trying to get back home to his mom in africa. he climbed a fence here at san jose maneta airport and stowed away in the wheel well of a plane making it all the way to hawaii. story so incredible, it seemed to take on a life of its own. john pistol told a senate committee they have been working nonstop to figure out exactly what happened here. he said that inspectors reviewed physical barriers here, electronic access, badging systems and compliance with all tsa directives and sjc did meet the requirements. there is a six-foot fence here and sjc took the extra step of putting barbed wire up. but what he said, basically, no one size fits all. he disagreed

nbc bay area's christie smith live in san francisco. christie, this is very troubling for dog owners. >> reporter: it is. good morning to you, scott. you know, that plate of meatballs was found right here among the bushes at 24th and ortega. of course, neighbors really upset about it for a number of reasons. this has happened before in other parts of the city. now, here. dogs used to pass and kids. and the woman who called police said the meatballs were stuffed with white pills. she took a picture of that plate and said one had about a small candle, about $1.50 in coins on it and of course the pieces of meat. this really odd discovery immediately raised a red flag because the woman who found it is a dog trainer herself. there are many dog walkers who use the path here where the tainted meat was found and many told us now they're not letting their dogs off-leash and letting them sniff in the bushes for fear that someone wants to poison the dogs. san francisco police did take the pills to try to find out what they are and they're looking i

"today in the bay" christie smith is joining us live in oakland where police officers are keeping a presencey the girl's home. christie? >> good morning. we just heard from one woman who walked out of the home who said, look, i already gave my statement to police and that's it, i have to go, i'm late for work. so, still, a lot of unanswered questions this morning. police have canvassed the area and it has been 13 hours since this little girl was seen around here and they are asking for the public's help in finding her and she is just 7 years old, as you said. her name is kianna orer and we have a picture to share with you this morning. she is four feet tall, 50 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. last seen wearing a black shirt, blue jeans and black tennis shoes. that was yesterday around 6:00 p.m. now oakland police have been parked on the block pretty much overnight. we shot some new video for you this morning. what they told us only is that she is still missing. but they haven't released the circumstances of her disappearance. whether she was alone or not, but they say, of course, she

"today in the bay" christie smith with an update on that baby's condition. good morning. >> good morning to you. yes, the latest information that we have this morning is that the baby is still hospitalized but in stable condition after a near drowning in a backyard swimming pool yesterday, mother's day here in concord. a timely reminder about water safety and children as we're head under to a warm week as christina was talking about. concord police were called to a home on ducker court 6:15 yesterday evening that an infant had drowned in a backyard pool. they found a nonresponsive baby being cared for by the family members. police took over the life-saving efforts until paramedics could arrive moments later. that baby was taken to the medical center a real joint effort to save the child's life who has been transferred to another hospital for treatment. now, police have not released the details of exactly how this accidental drowning. how that happened. but we certainly know that these situations can happen very fast with children. again, this week, expected

nbc bay area's christie smith live in san jose, where protesters will be out in support of immigrant rights. good morning, christie. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. well, it's a may day march and rally, but organizers just wrapped up explaining what it means to them specifically. and we're talking about workers' rights, but also immigrants' rights, setting off a day of action here in san jose, before they hit the streets for a march and rally, as they've done in years past, with support of labor unions and immigrant rights groups. one of their messages, they say, is they want to see an end to deportation. but also less focus, they say, on immigration status. one of the organizers at our lady of guadalupe church explained how they come together and the message she hopes people take home today. >> the reason why we, i think, we click together, is because as immigrants, it's really hard to have a good job or have a better job, have a better opportunity. we come here for american dreams, which means a good job or better pay. but without a legal status, it's really hard to get that

nbc bay area's christie smith is live in san francisco. christie, angelou had some very strong ties to this area. >> yeah, good morning to you, scott. you know, we all know her for her writing, her powerful voice, her commitment to civil rights, but here in san francisco today, she's being remembered for something else. she's being remembered as a streetcar conductor and a real pioneer. someone who helped the break down barriers decades ago in the city. maya angelou passed away at age 86. but when she was just 16, she was believed to be the first african-american streetcar conductor in this city, encouraged by her mom. there's a replica of that type of car she would have been in. back then, the streetcars were a two-person operation. she was the conductor. she would have greeted riders, collected fares, that sort of thing. the museum president says back then, it just really wasn't a welcome industry for women or african-americans. >> the way she tells the story, her mother told her, if you want this job, you go get it, and told her to go do

christie smith is live. >> good morning to you. along those lines. senator barbara boxer asked a tough line of questions and kind of been out there since that story first broke. how could this teenager get over a fence, past security seemingly undetected and on to a plane. we're now learning this happened three weeks after the airport was inspected and found to be in cupliance with federal security measures. what happened? what if it was someone else? those were among her questions. all because a 15-year-old from santa clara hopped a fence and got on to the wheel well of a plane and made it all the way to hawaii. incredible story certainly shined a light on airport security and a senate committee hearing the tsa administrator said they've been working nonstop on this. but inspected things like physical barriers and electronic access and found sjc met security and the airport has enhancements in place along their fence line, but with 450 airports, there is no one size fits all. >> if fencing was in fine shape, but at least one prior secretary of homel

christie smith is live in santa rosa, where parents must be shocked by this arrest. >> reporter: parents say they certainly understand the issue of trying to want to protect their child, especially from bullies, but they can't understand putting their hands on someone else's child. they were here handing out this letter basically telling parents a little bit about what had happened here over the weekend, or actually, on friday, when investigators were called out here. what it told them is that a parent came on to campus and confronted a student, that they told police that it is a policy that everyone must check in first. but the mom didn't check in at lunch, that she came to ol i vet charter school and ended up being arrested. they say she asked her son about a 12-year-old she believed was bullying her 10-year-old daughter. there was a confrontation and investigators say she allegedly grabbed the boy by the throat. >> i don't understand how you could put your hands on another child. i don't understand that part, no. but i do understand bullying is not acceptable. >> it's terrible when th

christie smith joins us live in fremont where one bay area family is certainly grieving. good morning. >> good morning to you. that's right. we spoke with a family friend of weihan wang. understandably upset about what has happened to him. she says he was the type of person who seemed to get along with just about everyone and this morning authorities say it is unclear whether he was a roommate to elliot rodger or just a visitor to the apartment but he was one of the uc santa barbara students stabbed to death in rodger's apartment. that friend said she immigrated with wang's family ten years ago from china to the united states. she told us wang graduated from fremont christian school. she can't believe he is a victim of the isla vista rampage. she says wang was the center of his family. >> they are really sad? >> yeah. definitely. the only one. only one son. >> now she says she's worried about sending her own child to college. a 16-year-old who will be leaving next year. she tells us that the family is heading to santa barbara this morning to try and deal with what has hap

nbc bay area's christie smith live outside the courthouse in santa rosa. now, christie, the mother admits to confronting the boy, but she says she didn't touch him, right? >> reporter: yeah, that's exactly right. and the attorney for the mother told the court that he has evidence that would show that this boy probably made up the story about her going for his throat. he says that the mom did go to the school and told him to stop bullying the daughter, but did not touch him. 30-year-old delia garcia-bratcher arrived in court with her attorney and supporters by her side. it was a very brief court appearance. no charges filed. and her attorney told the court he would share that evidence, but didn't say exactly what it was. the 30-year-old is accused of going to her kid's school, olivet elementary charter school on friday, and confronting a 12-year-old she believed was bullying her 10-year-old daughter and then grabbing him by the throat. the attorney says it did not happen that way, that she didn't touch him. she told him to stop being a brat and tormenting th

nbc bay area's christie smith is live this morning in vallejo. so christie, how exactly do they plan on doing this? >> reporter: good morning to you. we're talking about a system that could offer maybe a 60-second warning to you, that an earthquake is coming. it doesn't sound like a whole lot, but it could be enough time to make a potentially life-saving decision for yourself and for your family. and maybe automated systems could go ahead and shut off gas and assembly lines. and today what they're doing here in vallejo is talking about the $80 million that's needed, the initial estimate for the earthquake early warning system here in california. seismologists and geologists are here that would be key partners in making the system work. this comes as we will mark the 25th anniversary of the loma prieta quake coming up soon. senator alex padilla is behind sb-135 which was signed by governor brown. the office of emergency services had until 2016 to get all that funding in place. private partnerships are certainly key to this, but already places like

nbc bay area's christie smith live on market street, where crews just moved that big rig, christie. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you, scott. nearly 12 hours later, and we're finally seeing signs of progress out here on market street. i have to tell you, it's very loud out here, because they actually had to cut part of this tree to move that. so they brought in a wood chirp to handle what's left. but it was a spectacular fire. and what's incredible is that only one person in the truck had a minor injury. they were delivering food when apparently a hood flew open on the vehicle. there were also reports of a possible explosion and then a major fire. the sound of the crash startled neighbors on market street. cell phone video shows a ball of flames coming from the big rig after the driver lost control. >> i was on the phone with a friend, i had just hung up, and all of a sudden we heard, bam, pow, and he said, oh, my god, did you see that?! >> reporter: firefighters say around 12:30, the driver crossed the center median and crashed at sullivan's funeral home in the castro district.

nbc bay area's christie smith is live at kennedy high in richmond. christie, officers are saying this started out as a fight. >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. we did have a chance to speak with students this morning. they were rattled. they actually say that they heard some of the gunshots before class started this morning. parents upset too. they came running down here to make sure their kids were okay. what police are telling us is that a 14-year-old student was shot, hit in the leg after some sort of large altercation. a district official called it a big fight near a park that is across and down the street from kennedy high school. but that student who was hit was able to make it to the school for help and was taken to children's hospital. according to police, a school resource officer got word of a fight down the street, on cutting boulevard this morning about 8:30. then it quickly turned into reports of a shooting. again, that student who was hit was able to make it to the school principal's office for help. the campus was immediately put

nbc bay area's christie smith is live at the indian consulate in san francisco. christie, the consulate is taking a pretty unusual step to diffuse this problem. >> yeah, they are. they've opened their doors to let people in. there are still long lines and some confusion about exactly where people should be, because there are two locations now. but here at the consulate in san francisco, we've seen a few people come out with really big smiles, approved for travel visas after waiting out here for days to get one. we talked with one woman who came out with a huge sense of relief. they don't normally process here. this, though, is an exception, after the consulate general in india in san francisco, they replaced a company with cox kings global services for travel documents. they did that on may 21st. that's on bush street. travelers waited there for a long time, some of them flew from l.a., seattle, with thousands of dollars in airline tickets in limbo, trying to get to india. well, the company told us yesterday that their problem started with a commuter problem and a

nbc bay area's christie smith live outside ebay headquarters. this comes as this company was just hit by a massive cyberattack. >> reporter: that's exactly right. and ebay is encouraging users to go ahead and change your password. and if you use the same password on ebay you might use on other sites, you might want to go ahead and change that one too. because sometimes that's what data thieves are looking for. this after a cyberattack on a database that might include names, addresses, and phone numbers. the online auction site has nearly 1.5 million active users, but how many are affected is unclear. it says it has not found any evidence of unauthorized activity and the breach did not include financial information, but apparently one of the hackers got their hands on employee access and took the database between february and march. recently, though, it was discovered that the credentials were taken. we spoke this morning with eric chu, the founder of high trust in mountain view. they protect organizations against threats t s on the clou. he said

southbound 280 is completely closed right now and christie smith is out there bright and early or dark and early, i should say. why did they close down the entire side of the freeway this morning? >> good morning to you. this is all for seismic safety work. that closure didn't take long last night around 9:00 and now kind of an odd sight. the only traffic you're seeing is moving on northbound 280 and that seismic work can be completed over the weekend and this is actually going to be a very busy holiday weekend so this closure will likely have a very big impact as the southbound lanes are shut down on 280. drivers trying to head south in the city are being turned away, at least until tuesday morning. they got the road blocks up on the ramps at fourth and also sixth and brannen and now just out of commission. this is the giant start a six-day homestand and also carnaval happening in the city. people urged to use public transportation why this is going on the alternate ramps and options like the already crowded 101 really sound like a challenge to drivers. >> if you can't get on here, yo

christie smith is live and, christie, several faculty are refusing to sign that clause. >> yeah, good morning to you, laura. at least three teachers here say they didn't sign the contract. one of them told us while she loves working here and loves the school, she doesn't think that people's personal lives have any place under a work contract. so, today, the bishop is expected to meet with some faculty work in the diocese of oakland. the issue is a morality clause added to the teacher's contract and one teacher crossed off what she didn't agree with and said she wouldn't be teaching next year. the clause for the catholic school teachers covered their lives beyond school walls but doesn't spell out what's tolerated and what's not. many parents were outraged asking the diocese to hold off on a contract until everyone could agree on language. here's what one teacher had to say. >> there were three of us who have taken the position that we will not sign on to this. but i will tell you that there was a survey done by faculty and staff and extraordinary response to the survey in terms of jus
