now nbc bay area's christie smith is there live. it looks like firefighters are getting the upper hand. what are you learning? >> reporter: they're working very hard. we're at five alarms, eight buildings involved. this is one of those buildings at 29th and mission. what you see out here right now is just ladder trucks, i count at least four or five of them, spraying water on the outside of these buildings. these are residential units, with businesses below. it started at 2:00, as you said, and grew quickly. there is a shelter-in-place for a five-block radius because of the thick smoke and flames that were going up. we could actually see smoke coming from several buildings, including pohl hardware. firefighters say because of the paint and other chemicals that may be involved, they wanted people to take proper precautions. no injuries to report. this is still an active fire and a fluid situation as they work to gain control. >> if you look at the ladder trucks that we have up, if you look on the ground, the large water pipes on the

nbc bay area's christie smith is in the city where the meeting just wrapped up. what do you know? >> reporter: i can tell you this meeting was very well attended. more people than anyone expected. more than 50 people, many representing businesses in the castro district concerned about their safety. i spoke with one restaurant manager on the way out. he said overall he was feeling much better leaving that meeting, that his concerns about safety were addressed in this meeting. without going into detail, he felt police and business owners have a solid plan in place with increased security. that manager told us, of course, concern is very high since the mass shooting. police say there is no known threat here. businesses are stepping up and so are police. >> everybody is dealing with the reality of the situation, how many people we'll have to deal with and the new challenges that are brought on with the recent events. but i have a really good feeling coming out of this meeting. >> yes, the police department will be increasing presence during pride week and particularly on pride weekend

nbc bay area's christy smith is live in san francisco with us tonight with the story. a lot of people that are obviously watching that go down. >> yes, that's right. this ended late this afternoon. san francisco police say the suspect went through a sky light, into a business and actually fought with some people in that business. fought with police who were trying to take him into custody. they said they tried to negotiate with him, he would indicate he would try to surrounder, and then suddenly do something else. san francisco police deployed two flash bangs after hours of negotiations to bring a standoff to an end. they say an arm burglary suspect refused to cooperate and it escalated. >> the suspect went to a sky light, into another business occupied by people of the hair business. once the suspect went inside, he violently fought with officers. he was covered in glass and resisting by biting and spitting at officers. >> reporter: the suspect was taken to the hospital but not before officers hit him with a less lethal option, a bean bag round. >> out of a total of s
