nbc bay area's christie smith is live at the fire station in san francisco. christie, this is one of the locations where firefighters are heading out near carmel. >> reporter: that's right, the san francisco fire department received a call that help of what is needed. right now nearly two dozen san francisco firefighters are on the move, heading to monterey county to help out. they will join a number of other firefighting agencies from the bay area. now, the call was for an immediate strike team. and san francisco sent five engines. they will join more than 300 firefighters that are already on the ground. this fire quickly jumped to 1800 acres. we're hearing that number may actually be higher, as you said, it's threatening a thousand structures. evacuations were under way in colorado. we spoke with an assistant chief in san francisco but how they'll help out. >> when we send our crews down there, they're there for structure protection, mostly. they'll go into the urban interface where we have homes that are built into the hillsides amongst the trees in some of
