we have team coverage for you tonight starting with christie smith live in san francisco. christie, we know people are on edge tonight, making sure everyone is safe there in the city. >> reporter: you know, absolutely. and i have to tell you that the big crowds of course are not here just yet. but we are starting to see some people walk around in their new year's eve gear. i spoke with a couple of folks who came in from out of town, they said they wanted to get here early, be safe, have a nice din and h dinner and stake out a good spot to watch fireworks here along the embarcadero. many people told us they're staying in hotels, that this is a tradition to come to the city to watch the fireworks and be with the crowds. a few people we spoke to yesterday commented that 2016 was tough and they're ready to turn the page. these two women tell us they come to the city each year. >> a lot of people, they just have fun, you know. all the people talking, it's very nice. >> reporter: how many years have you come out here? >> wow, it's over 15 years. >> we have dinner reservations at

let's talk to christie smith, christie this is where the traffic stopped what, about an hour ago? >> reporter: yes, and i have to tell you the crews arrived 30 minutes ago, i heard their chain saws working, and they got this you c eucalyptus tree here, getting it off the shoulder, but again this is the area to avoid because there was a long backup of cars trying to get around this even though it looks like lanes have opened again. now the chp said they started to get calls before 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, now a big tree came crashing down, again, the area is wet from the rain, nobody was hurt in this but a close call for one driver. the chp said the driver was not able to stop in time and actually ran into the tree laying in the road. but again, nobody injured. and cars were able to get by. but it's not an easy move, the trees are cut back, again, chp trying to clear it out but again the exit lane is one you have to creep around. again, traffic is moving but you do want to avoid this area, because just past where we're standing there is still a long backup. that is the latest repo
