we have team coverage for you tonight starting with christie smith live in san francisco. christie, we know people are on edge tonight, making sure everyone is safe there in the city. >> reporter: you know, absolutely. and i have to tell you that the big crowds of course are not here just yet. but we are starting to see some people walk around in their new year's eve gear. i spoke with a couple of folks who came in from out of town, they said they wanted to get here early, be safe, have a nice din and h dinner and stake out a good spot to watch fireworks here along the embarcadero. many people told us they're staying in hotels, that this is a tradition to come to the city to watch the fireworks and be with the crowds. a few people we spoke to yesterday commented that 2016 was tough and they're ready to turn the page. these two women tell us they come to the city each year. >> a lot of people, they just have fun, you know. all the people talking, it's very nice. >> reporter: how many years have you come out here? >> wow, it's over 15 years. >> we have dinner reservations at

let's talk to christie smith, christie this is where the traffic stopped what, about an hour ago? >> reporter: yes, and i have to tell you the crews arrived 30 minutes ago, i heard their chain saws working, and they got this you c eucalyptus tree here, getting it off the shoulder, but again this is the area to avoid because there was a long backup of cars trying to get around this even though it looks like lanes have opened again. now the chp said they started to get calls before 3:00 p.m. this afternoon, now a big tree came crashing down, again, the area is wet from the rain, nobody was hurt in this but a close call for one driver. the chp said the driver was not able to stop in time and actually ran into the tree laying in the road. but again, nobody injured. and cars were able to get by. but it's not an easy move, the trees are cut back, again, chp trying to clear it out but again the exit lane is one you have to creep around. again, traffic is moving but you do want to avoid this area, because just past where we're standing there is still a long backup. that is the latest repo

christie smith joins us live from city hall. it is lit up behind you in pink. >> reporter: that's right, city hall is lit up in san francisco in solidarity. in covering this we were walking along market street and i did not and see a break in this large crowd for over an hour. many of the people we spoke with said they will not give up the rights so many people fought for. carrying umbrellas and homemade signs, women, men and entire families marched from civic center down market street. >> i feel like half of america is trying to find the other half. >> reporter: lori wagner marched in pacifica earlier and then marched in san francisco. >> i'm worried about the stock market, the, certainly women's safety. >> reporter: the creativity in the signs summed up what many were thinking. >> women's rights. we're not going backwards. >> reporter: the march aimed at supporting women's and human rights was lined with signs and there were comments aimed at resisting president donald trump. >> she's a nasty one. >> i am. i'm fighting, man. >

christy smith has the latest on that. i see the water right behind you. >> reporter: that's right. terry, the rain has stopped, but that doesn't mean the situation has necessarily improved on this portion of highway 37 near 101. what we're told is that efforts fully under way to remove the water, but at this point, the ground is saturated, and the highway is flooded. flood water blocks both directions of highway 37 near 101. the chp says they were monitoring and this morning water started to rise. before a closure was in place, a driver had to be rescued. and with more rain coming, it's just not passable. >> as of right now, this closure is going to be in place for at least a couple of days, if not longer. the last time this happened, it took us approximately a week to get all of this water out there. >> reporter: in sonoma county, highway 121 near 12 is flooded again, closed. while drivers are warned not to, some tried to clear the intersection. elizabeth miller says the series of storms have been nonstop. >> it was really, really, like, yeah, there was a lot of it really loud, re

let's go to nbc bay area's christie smith, who's live at sfo right now. chris christie, this is a very chaotic scene. we're talking about it impacting incoming flights. >> reporter: that's right. this demonstration was slated to begin at 3:00. here it is, 5:00, and you can see how many demonstrators are out here. there are hundreds of protesters outside the international terminal at sfo, protesting against president trump's executive order, which blocks enter of certain refugees from mostly muslim countries. in this crowd of people chanting and carrying signs, we are told there are some families here. also, a number of attorneys who are trying to clear up confusion and help those family members who believe their loved ones are being held or detained here at the airport after arriving. there are a number of volunteer attorneys who say that families are not getting much information from u.s. customs and border protection. we have reached out to them, as well. have not heard back. but they believe that there may be a handful, half dozen, possibly more people

christie smith is live. a lot of people say when it rains like this, it can flood in the city. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. i have to tell you within the last 15 minutes or so, the rain has started coming down here in san francisco. behind us, temporary flood barriers are in place. they may be put to the test during this storm. in the east bay, we already found some problems. at 17th and folsom, interlocking flood barriers are lined up ready to keep water out of homes and businesses. crews keeping an eye at the flood prone intersection. over near cayuga street, neighbors are worried the storm will reignite sewage problems. >> they dropped off sand bags at the end of the street. >> they previously told us that worker dozen clean the drains when it rains heavily. >> he said i think a try might be down. >> reporter: diana bell alerted her a at all tree had fallen near the exit to her house near redwood. >> coming along 13, you don't think a tree is going to come down at that moment. with all this rain which

christie smith live along the closed highway. i see it right there behind you, the flooding. >> reporter: yeah, that's right, terry, one look at this and you can see why highway 37 is closed again near 101. and it is raining again. has been for over an hour. now, there will be efforts to get all this water out of here, but i have to tell you right now it's just sat rurated in all directions. the marshland is saturated. there's so much water from these storms. you can see there's actually a car partially submerged out there. the chp says that the driver was actually unable to make it through and needed rescuing but is uninjured. the closure was about to go up, we're toll, when that driver got caught in the rising water early this morning. officers had been monitoring it. now, once again, this is 37 right near 101. it is closed. it was closed before and it's unclear, they say, exactly when it might reopen. >> as of right now, it appears that this closure is going to be in place for at least a couple of days if not longer. last time

christie smith. >> thank you. firefighters said they tried to go skinny dipping in the ocean, and they had to rescue two men. one man was stranded on the cliff while his friend was stuck in the water. >> this is treacherous water to say the least, and the cliff face accounts for many rescues over the years. it is not a place for humans to be attending at night let alone during the day. >> and the ocean water by the day is 50 degrees. both men were pulled to safety and shaken and perhaps a little bit embarrassed, but otherwise, okay. >> and a car crashed into an e electrical box in santa rosa this morning and the driver was driving under the influence. >> these are pictures from the scene, and the police say that the driver jumped the curb and crashed into the electrical box and bushes and that happened on the corner of montgomery village. the driver was taken to the hospital where it was determined that she had been under the influence. pg a gshg&e restored the power. >> and now, another step taken for the oakland

christie smith is live in san francisco to explain this risky maneuver. christie?reporter: workers tell me they'll be here for a few more hours. they are picking up what fell down earlier today. crews were worried that the rocks would be coming down in the next few storms so they sped things up safely today. heavy rock and dirt crashed down from a steep hillside in san francisco. all part of a plan as crews worked to try and remove loose rocks. >> we were concerned about the heavy rains last night and in the future knocking those big pieces out. >> reporter: yesterday afternoon, public works closed a portion of the road to begin work to reduce the risk. in last week's storm, a rockslide briefly closed the road and geotechnical experts were brought in. >> they determined some major pieces were loose. we had an emergency declaration by our director to get our contractor out here to do the work. >> reporter: already in place to catch debris in the short term, things like more sensing will be added as they weigh in. >> we haven't had any rain for five years and things

christy smith, nbc bay area news. >> san francisco police released this photo of the suspect. they say that this man captured on video slashed a passenger at the civic center station last friday night. the victim suffered serious cuts to his head and hand. the suspect fled after the attack. investigators say he's a 29-year-old from california. >> an amber alert for a boy believed to have been in kidnapping. the boy found who heard the alert and took action. the alert went into effect about noon today. the boy was last seen yesterday afternoon in a blue minivan with the family friend. she came back out the van's gone so was the boy. an hour after the amber alert went out. a bystander spotted the van in oakland. called 911, found the boy and the woman and reunited the boy. >> just an excellent example of how this system is effective and works and can bring these situations to a peaceful resolution very rapidly when all the pieces are put together. >> it's a not clear if that family friend is going to be charged with a crime. >> and the inauguration is now six days away but alrea
