and tonight they're hoping to send a powerful message to hospital management, ktvu's christien kafton is in oakland now with details on what patients can expect now. >> reporter: you can see they are here for the long haul. you'll be able to see striking nurses, there is some hospital security there as well. today is the first day of a three day strike. nurses from children's hospital and research center oakland are walking the picket line over health care benefits. rodney campbell brought his 4- year-old son this morning, he sympathizing with the nurses but wants the best care for his son. >> that does scare me. >> reporter: martha cool has been an oncology nurse here for eight years and says she had to walk out. >> it's always a difficult decision for nurses when we have to strike. and we only do it when we've been pushed as far as we've been by our employer. >> reporter: the hospital says with the current economy it needs to control costs and is offering nurses several options. the strike forced the hospital to cut the number of scheduled surgeries in half. delaying elective proced

they voted to eliminate its police force and as christien kafton reports seeing carlos is considering doing the same thing to its fire department. >> reporter: with sales and property taxes down, they are looking to outsource fire and emergency services as a way to cut more than $1 million. >> the issue is tough and if you look at issues around california everybody is downsizing all of your sectors except for safety and fire were you have more people and it's more expensive. >> reporter: they have shared services with belmont since 1979 but this year san carlos opted to dissolve that partnership and they have one year to figure out how it will cover fire in emergencies. tonight the council will review a consultant's report in the way some options including the possibility of a new partnership with cal fire or other peninsula cities. they say citizens should not see a difference in services or response time but many san carlos residents say they are -- there are more unknowns than those and they are worried. >> we do not know what is going on. we would like to know so we could figure o

christien kafton is live where crews are working on natural gas pipeline. >> reporter: and let's take a look at where crews are laying a new pipeline for natural gas. the aim of the whole project is to make sure the peninsula has an adequate supply of natch natural gas as we approach the winter. today's work was at times loud. pg & e crews had to vent the natural line so crews could rerout the gas up the peninsula around the areas affected by the septembers explosion. the effect will be similar to pg & e rerouting electricity around an outage. >> very similar to what we would do if we had an electrical outage. >> reporter: the act of purging the line sent gas into the air. some people knew they knew it was coming. >> we found about it through a phone call, then there was a story in the paper and then online. so there were three ways we were informed. >> reporter: others just found out today. >> i still haven't heard anything. >> reporter: some of those interruptions could affect large residential customers but pg & e says the work out here that they are doing today will allow them to

ktvu's christien kafton is live with our report. >> reporter: take a look here in the window, you see the sign that says stop the gang injunction. it's just one of those signs of opposition. the message is clear from a will the of people living in north oakland. they want to see a stop to the injunctions. opponents to the oakland gang injunction protested across the street from the courthouse today saying injunctions violate the civil rights of oakland residents. >> it's been proven across the state in l.a., sacramento, long beach, that these are ineffective strategies to fight crimes. >> reporter: despite the injunctions, an alameda judge took no steps to stop the injunction. the lawyer for the open oakland man fighting the injunction says he will continue to fight. >> our goal is to have the city and the court follow mandates. keep the city safe by good polices and not by taking away rights. >> to the most violent offenders it is having the effect we wanted. >> reporter: a trial date has been set for october 2011 for the man fighting the oakland gang injunction. we're live in oaklan

ktvu's christien kafton joins us now. he's in san bruno with the details. >> reporter: crews are almost done with the first phase. you can see pg & e crew here actually installing a very short section of gas line. it's part of the over all plan to get ready for winter when demand for gas will increase.pg & e crews will work to rerout gas, similar to rewiring electricity. but with heavy gas use expected, the utility company is exploring the plan to release gas by 20%. pg & e says since it can't run its line at full pressure, some customers may have their gas temporarily cut off. >> i think less would be available to them. there maybe cases where they wouldn't have gas, but we would communicate with those customers if that was the plan, we decided to use this winter. >> reporter: the public utility's commission says the pressure guidelines are aimed at making sure there isn't a repeat of september's explosion until the gas line could be thoroughly checked. the pvc says there could be outages but they won't affect the reside
