ktvu's christien kafton is with protesters in san francisco but we begin with eric rasmussen live in oakland where last night's demonstration sparked violence and vandalism. >> reporter: it sounds like a large march through downtown is getting ready to start. look behind me. hundreds filled in in the last 45 minutes. denouncing the acquittal of george zimmerman. many say they are angry but not everyone is expressing it in the same way. >> it is a racist system. >> reporter: 3,000 miles from florida where trayvon martin was killed and a jury acquitted george zimmerman. protesters in oakland are back in the spotlight denouncing the justice system. >> we are all trayvon martin. >> this needs to stop. i have children and they are getting older. i don't want them to live in fear. i don't want to be afraid for my son. >> reporter: from this rally, protesters remained peaceful. others lashed out. a photographer was pushed and threatened in oakland saturday night. protesters vandalized a bus stop and spanished windows -- spatials windows -- smashed windows. >> they are working hard like ever

christien kafton has more on that and also one theory why these violent protesters keep on targetingland. >> reporter: tonight we are learning the names of some of those police say were involved in monday night's mayhem, among the most serious injuries a waiter from an oakland restaurant hit in the head with a hammer. his coworkers say she is resting at home and was hit only because he was trying to stop people from breaking the windows. most of those arrested live outside of oak land. one of the big questions is why protesters come to oakland to do things like this. part of answer might lie to easy access to mass transit. >> i think that's the key to this, i do. >> reporter: part of the sudden increase in rowdy protest may be a frustration with more peaceful methods. >> it may be that we've run the limits with the tradition dance we've done in terms of protests. and that it has to be other ways of doing it. >> reporter: jones says the increase in violence directed toward the media is a new phenomenon. in the past, organizers have wanted their message to reach as many people as possi

ktvu's christien kafton with more on the collision that shut down service for several hours. >> minute after the crash between a muni light-rail vehicle and a van shortly before 1:00 this afternoon, more than a dozen passengers lined 3rd street and evans avenue while responders evaluated them. eventually loading up 19 patients to be checked out at various hospitals. michelle howard says she has on board with her young daughter when the crash happened. >> where that glass fell in at. >> reporter: she says she scrambled to protect her daughter. >> i had to cover my baby so the glass wouldn't hit her. >> reporter: police say the muni light-rail vehicle and van were heading towards the downtown, that the van tried to make a left turn in front of the light-rail vehicle and that is what caused the accident. >> there has been some talk about a pedestrian that may have been in the crosswalk and that was causing one of the drivers to pause in the queue and that may have been an associated factor to the accident. >> reporter: police say that the driver of white van has been cooperative with inve
