ktvu christien kafton has the honor of being one of the reporters on this story. christian, you getting a little sent l mental about this bridge -- sentimental about this bridge? >> reporter: i kind of a. it's the bridge we traveled back and forth to go across from the east bay to san francisco. wouldn't it be great if that bridge isophenol parting gift was a great morning commute. let's take a look as you said earlier. looking smooth as traffic comes along the s-curve. we are just 14 hours out from the bay bridge shut down. transition commuters from the old s-curve from the old eastern span there to the new eastern span there on the left. earlier we drove the bridge from oakland into san francisco at 5:15. it was smooth sailing pap little misty at times. the bridge shuts down at 8:00 tonight until tuesday morning. so crews can begin demolition. paving and lane striping on that new bridge. some drivers say despite its problems and its history they are also feeling a little nostalgic about the bay bridge. >> i'm going to miss the bay bridge. hopefully it will be be

christien kafton is live. how is the commute going so far? >> reporter: you know, it's looking pretty good. we were up on the platform earlier. it didn't look to be as busy as it was yesterday. take a look at the bart station. you can see the commuters trickle in. more of a trickle than a stream i would say. it's still early but there are indications certainly the days commute might not be as busy. we talked with a couple people here that say so far there do not seem to be as many riders as yesterday. that backs up what we saw when we were up on the platform. bart did release the ridership numbers for yesterday's commute for 7:00 p.m. yesterday evening. parking lot says they saw -- bart says it saw an increase of 62,000 riders over the same day last year. regular riders say they saw increase passenger on their way to work or coming home. >> coming home. it's jammed up where it usually isn't. >> reporter: that is a common theme. either on their way in or on their way home, it was standing room only. we are waiting to find out if that is the ca

and ktvu's christien kafton is live in oakland where crews say many of the major projects have already been completed. >> reporter: as you might imagine, there's a lot of work underway. we have a crew touring the bridge. more on that later on. today, crews are focusing on the yerba buena tunnel and they are focusing on the toll plaza. crew crews -- crews say they are about a quarter of the way through the job. caltrans left a tour this morning. >> on the eastbound deck, grinding and paving is ongoing. on the westbound side, all grinding is complete. and most of the paving has been done up to the toll plaza. >> reporter: the round the clock work is currently on schedule, paving on the approach of the yerba buena tunnel has been completed. work is being completed to attach the new bike path. >> we're on schedule. we don't want people to plan for any other time other than 5:00 a.m. on tuesday. if it looks like we can open early, we'll let everyone know. >> reporter: meanwhile, the traffic nightmare some envisioned has not developed. commuters report some delays but by and large, most peop

ktvu's christien kafton joining us live.with more on the countdown to tonight's bridge closure and what commuters need to know. >> reporter: yeah, dave. just under 12 hours to go until the bridge closes. let's give you the live look again from yerba buena island looking out. you can see traffic moving along fairly smoothly along the s-curve. looking to the right, you can see the portion there will be transitioning traffic onto. that will be the focus of a great deal of work. if you take a look you can see where the lane striping is coming to an end, and they will have to be doing some paving work and in the last ten minutes, i got off with the phone with caltrans. the spokesman tells me right now crews are working on final touches before the closure. he says there are no major projects they are working on today, just getting prepped for this five-day construction marathon. we have video of the 77-year- old span. the last morning commute across this section of the bridge. we drove the bridge ourself and it was smooth sailing

ktvu christien kafton is joining us live with more on this countdown. good morning, christian. >> reporter: good morning. let's give you a live look. sal was just talking about it. let's give you a look from the ground level. you can see the commute looking very good. we are a little less than 15 hours away from the bay bridge closure. and many drivers are taking their final morning commute across the bay bridge before that new eastern span opens. we are at the preparation phase at this point. as we have been reporting, the bridge shuts down at 8:00 tonight until tuesday morning. while the bridge itself shuts down at 8:00, the california highway patrol will begin shutting down feeder freeways to the bridge at 7:00 p.m.. so if your travels take you across the bridge this evening, you need to take that into account. if you try to roll up to the bridge at 7:59 it will be very difficult to get here. drivers are beginning to say goodbye to a bridge that has carried drivers for 77 years. >> well, i guess it served its purpose. right? and now out with the old

christien kafton, ktvu. >> thanks, christien kafton. public to catch a glimpse of the demolition. campus is scheduled to reopen 6:00 a.m. on monday. >>> there are new questions about the opening of the new bay bridge. we want to show you a live picture this morning. there's the new bridge and the old bridge, side by side. now, work on the new span will continue through september 3rd, when it is scheduled to officially open. now, officials had originally planned a very large celebration that actually set aside $5.6 million in toll money to pay for that public event. then private funds were also raised for a fireworks show. but now, with a tight deadline, organizers have canceled the big bash, which was expected to draw some 200,000 people. so the question now is where does the money go? we're told contractors for the event will still get paid for planning that's already been done. then the remaining money is going to go into the general fund. >> they are there. the commission made a decision to allocate them. we have a contract with a co

ktvu's christien kafton looked into the violence on oakland's young people. >> reporter: oakland police are looking for evidence in a string of oakland shootings. a young child injure bid shattered glass and a woman killed. tonight parents say they struggle on what to tell their children. >> you want to let them know because everybody is good. everybody has a good side. but when you see things like this you don't know where to start. >> reporter: paul simmons runs youth uprising aimed at changing if community by reaching out to the youth. >> it actually creates an environment in which those children are much more likely. 90% of them will be victims or perpetrators perpetrators of a violent crime. >> reporter: simmons says violence comes from a number of factors. shootings traumatize the community as a whole. >> everyone is affected by that not just the people who are there at the time of the shooting but everyone around them. their family, their friends, classmates, their neighbors, everyone. >> reporter: parents stress it's important to address the issue in a way children can understan
