christin ayers has more. >> reporter: allen as you said both men left behind toddler children. oakland police are investigating whether they were the victims of an armed robbery gone awry. a father of a 2-year-old and a mentor of children at this oakland elementary school, both men's lives would end inside sweet jimmie's restaurant and bar early monday morning when a gunman fired shots inside hurting four people and killing two. >> he was just easy-going, nice, upbeat guy, you know, and i never -- i never even seen him mad. >> reporter: one of the victims, 27-year-old billy jenkins, was freddie parks' son- in-law. they shared a love for old cars and playing chess. >> it's hard to believe that we're talking about his death. >> reporter: jenkins had a daughter with his high school sweetheart. the other victim, 22-year-old adam williams, was also a father and a mentor to children at oakland's peralta elementary school where his mother also works. on its website the school said, "peralta children looked forward to playing with adam every day. he patiently threw football passes, tau

christin ayers in oakland where city leaders are troubled by this latest violence. >> reporter: tonight oakland police have increased patrols in and around jack london square. they have only a vague description of the gunman who peppered this bar with bullets killing two men and injuring four others. a shooting spree overnight steps from the oakland police department near one of the only places still considered a haven from crime. >> of oakland's various neighborhoods, this is the safest one. >> reporter: but jack london square became a virtual war zone overnight. two men were killed, four others killed at sweet jimmy's bar and restaurant where patrons and employees were gathered playing videogames. >> one suspect got out, approached the door and what happened after that i can't tell you but gunshots were fired. and six people were hit. >> reporter: it was one of two shootings within two hours. the gunmen arrived with three other men in their teens and 20s inside in a vehicle like this. when he was turned away at the door, he reportedly opened fire with an assault rifle. >> it appears t

christin ayers reports police don't think the victim was the intended target. >> reporter: that's one two of shootings that happened within two hours of each other that oakland police are investigating. i 20-year-old survived one of those shootings this morning but it was the murder, apparent random murder, of a mother two of and a school lunch lady that has officials calling for an end to the violence. >> the sense of depression kind of permeates the air. >> reporter: the crime tape frames an oakland playground the only sign that there was a murder here last might. a mother of two was walking poplar park with a friend last night when police say gunfire broke out. beatrice burton was dead by the time her boyfriend got her to the hospital. >> there is no death that makes sense but one that an individual is walking down the street and just happens to be in the wrong place is just a tragedy. >> reporter: a tragedy that has rocked the office of the berkeley unified school district where burton and several family members were employed. burton worked the lunch counter at oxford elementary s

christin ayers tells us now some of the suspects have been arrested. there could be more. >> reporter: this is really the kind of heist that you only hear about in the movies, masked men stealing close to $40 million in computer chips from a tech company. but authorities say while the robbers were likely looking for buyers on the black market, the cops were closing in. authorities say these are the men who stormed the fremont tech company unigen in february cutting through a fence and holding employees at gunpoint while they lifted tens of millions of dollars in flash memory computer chips. >> if these guys went into a bank and tried to rob a bank, they would get maybe 10 or $15,000. this was a $37 million haul. >> reporter: $37 million in computer chips that were destined for google. the robbers loaded them on a delivery truck and investigators say went looking for a buyer. some of the chips wound up in asia but most never made it out of the bay area. >> if the product that was recovered had left the area, it becomes much more difficult to make a case

christin ayers is in oakland where you might be surprised to find out what people are selling. christin. >> reporter: elizabeth, every gold buyer i spoke to today told me business is booming, that customers are coming into jewelry exchange stores and pawn shops turning everything from utensils to tooth fillings into cash. we also heard that the price of silver was up, as well. it spiked quite a bit up to about $40 an ounce at the highest that it's been since the 1980s but it truly is gold that's getting all the attention. we spoke to a number of people today coming in and out of some of these local jewelry exchange shops and coming into pawn shops, as well. all of them tuned into the fact that gold is the highest that it's ever been. and some of the shop owners who we spoke to told me they have been getting calls all day hearing from people who know just how valuable gold is now. it is as you said upwards of $1,500 an ounce. that's the highest it's ever been. and it's continued to climb over the past three weeks. so again, talking to many people out here who have been sort of sh

as christin ayers reports... for >>> a former uc berkeley doctor facing allegations of sexual assaults. male victims at a campus clinic. for some the abuse allegedly didn't stop in the exam room. >> reporter: all together six former patients have come forward accusing the doctor of 19 counts of sexual battery and other misconduct. they alleged the doctor forced unnecessary medical procedures on them tricking them into sexual contact. the doctor left the alameda county courthouse under a cloud of suspicion. his medical license suspended his career as a family physician over. >> the doctor is extremely grateful for the outpouring of support from his colleagues and his patients. >> reporter: he was so well known that his lawyer says one gay rights group routinely referred gay male patients to him but the district attorney said for years he was abusing male students at uc berkeley as far back as 2006. >> there was sexual contact in the course of examinations that was far and beyond appropriate medical procedures. >>

christin ayers is in oakland . >>> well, here is another headache for cash strapped oakland. thieves are taking aim at the city's parking metres literally. christin airs is in oakland with how much these thefts are costing the city. >> reporter: dana, it took a very short walk to find these sawed off parking metres. a half a dozen within a few hundred feet all because thieves are quite literally ripping them off. workers at downtown oakland's sidecar restaurant started noticing it late last year. one day they were fully intact. >> it looked like somebody took a hack saw a powerless tool of some sort and cut the heads off. >> until there were more than half a dozen decapitated metres on this block alone. >> we really think it is the change in the economy. people are looking for extra change. so what they do is cut the meter head off. they take it some place where they tried to break in. >> reporter: for the city it means lost revenue and another $300 to replace each damaged meter. so parking officials have set up a foil. >> and we've been installing a deterrent sleeve over the
