christina loren will tell us how long this will last. let's start with christie smith. she is bearing down this morning live out there along the elements on the san mateo bridge. what's it like out there? >> reporter: good morning to you. i have to tell you, this is the real thing. it's been so long since i've seen it. i had to figure out where all of my rain gear is. i haven't had it on for such a long time. since i got up driving in from the east bay it's raining just like this. you can see there is standing water out here on the ground. we drove across the san mateo bridge. my photographer had to hold the steering wheel tight. it's windy crossing the bridge too. that is causing some problems throughout on the roadways. already this morning starting in san francisco, a bad one, a driver in a porsche drove with the top down this morning, spun out and hit a tree. there were some minor injuries and the car itself, well, it was totaled. if you know cars, those can go up to $100,000. major front end damage there. we're talking about rain flew the morning commute which in y

we start with meteorologist christina loren.oins us in the weather center. >> good morning to you. one of those mornings you don't want to sit around watching "today in the bay" although we love you, you want to get out there as soon as possible because we have really thick fog and it will likely create a slower than normal drive for you this morning. i do want to show you right now we have visibility down to a quarter mile in santa rosa, a half mile in fair field, down to the south bay we have the thickest conditions. a mile and a quarter in san jose. three miles in gilroy, two miles in livermore. that fog is going to stick with us for most of the day. that's going to limit your temperatures in places like san francisco. nonetheless, we're still going to break into the 60s later on today so you want to make sure you grap those shades as there is sunshine on tap. first you got to get through that thick fog and make it to work. i want to take it live to bob redell. he has been out in san jose all morning near 280. any changes thr

good morning to you there, christina. one of the sand bag locations in the south bay run by the valley water district. there is the possibility some areas in the bay area tomorrow during that soaker you talked about could see some ponding. that's where you would have water accumulating in low-lying areas or if you lived in one of those that possibility is real. check with your water utility district to see where your nearest sandbag location is. this is one of several that the valley runs in san jose. yesterday that storm dumped about an inch of rain on the area. much needed considering the drought that california has been struggling with. unfortunately nowhere near enough and this weekend storm won't be enough to get us out of this drought. several series of these storms to significantly improve our water situation. so right now we're roughly 20% of where we need to be. rainfall wise. this weekend's storm can maybe get us up to 30% but we're very below where we need to be to get out of this drought. you do see the rain c

as promised here's mike inouye and your drive. >> good morning, christina.t the increasing moisture and the systems coming in. we see the effect of that. this is the san mateo bridge, i've been losing the view trying to track it. glad section here there is a sign indicating eastbound traffic the speed that you're getting over to the bay. we're losing a little visibility here and look at the map and see that overall eight not registering on our weather index. the clouds are drifting through not holding the averages down enough to cause an issue as far as the sensors are concerned. that's why you have us to interpret that data. northbound 101 shows a bit of slowing as we approach the 6:00 hour on this thursday. we see the slow approaching 60 and continuing up toward 880. 87 will follow suit oef the next few minutes. over here smooth drive through the trivalley and no problems there. southbound slow coming from 84 but typical visibility in this area it's fine including the sunol grade moving nicely. over here a little slowing, fender bender northbound 880 to th

christina genovese renna. it was her e-mail that proved that governor christie didn't tell the truth when he said his staff knew nothing about it during the lane closures. she released a statement through her lawyer saying she resigned her position effective this past friday. in the statement, miss renna professed her continuing respect and admiration for the governor. he said nothing about the ongoing scandal being a cause for her leaving. she said, instead, she'd been considering leaving the governor's office anyway for a long time since maybe back to the election but decided she would go now. she decided specifically that her last day would be the day that david wildstein made the allegation that governor christie knew about the lane closures on the bridge while they were still under way. the governor denies that, but his staff definitely did know. and that e-mail from september 12th from christina renna not only proves it, it now raises important questions. look at the e-mail. first let's check the forecast with meteorologist christina loren. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you. the time 4:30. and we are tracking pretty significant rainfall. especially in the north bay. things are starting to improve but i want to show you this live picture of san jose where things are looking relatively clear. so we're going to take a look. first, i want to take you live to bob redell out there on the roads. bob, what is the aftermath from this whopper storm? we didn't get a lot in the south bay but we did north of the golden gate bridge. >> reporter: yes, good morning to you. of course right now we do have a break in that rain. we're on highway 87 at guadeloupe heading through downtown san jose on northbound 280, you can see this is good, it's going to make for an easier commute but it's not good for our water supplies, the people in charge of our water tell us we need a lot more rain. yes, this storm was helpful but nowhere near enough. we're still at about 20 to 25% of normal rainfall levels for this time of the year. >> i think

i want to check in with meteorologist christina loren. she's got that microclimate forecast for us. >> yeah, good morning to you, laura, scott, everybody at home. we have really heavy rainfall and it is just started. give yourself plenty of time this morning. if you can postpone travels we highly encourage you to do so. the heaviest of the rain is coming through the next few hours. i can tell you it is downright treacherous on local roadways. taking a live look, this is 280 where it comes together with 17, heavy ponding, hydroplaning likely when speeding, we have flooding on the freeways. localized street flooding. avoid areas where you can't detect the depth of the water. i hate to say it but it's true, turn around, don't drown, don't damage your vehicle. it can be costly if you do so. we have wind blown debris over the local highways and roadways especially the higher elevations where the wind has been whipping all night. i want to bring in anthony slaughter live in campbell. i had to drive up 10 miles from campbell to downtown san jose

mike inouye. >> good morning, christina. taking you to the south bay now where the volume of traffic starting to increase again before that second wave we see. this will hit and stick slowing north of 680 on north 101. coming into downtown, highway 87. keep in mind, that investigation that bob's talking about, someone stabbed and killed overnight off of santa clara street, santa clara between market and second, which is still closed right now, vta reportedly rerouted. use second street, santa clara station is closed this morning. but all details on the vta.org site. the latest on the changes that they continue to make as the situation evolves. so far we see slowing on 87 north of there. but that's typical for the morning. allow a few minutes for the work around possibly until 7:00, maybe later. bob's there. we'll follow that. look who showed up, the orange. the fog sensors reading that you'll have tougher visibility for road weather index, traffic and weather tied together, we see it on the computer model slowing as well. re

good morning to you, christina. and you can see if you look at the background they finally got something. it's this unique thing called real snow. the stuff that actually falls from the sky, not the manmade stuff. they got about 5 1/2 feet. another foot expected this weekend. and you can see the groomers are out there right now, the grooming machines as they have been preparing the runs for this friday day of skiing which will kick off the weekend and key week next week. a lot of schools will be off. we spoke to the resort not long ago. they have been sweating throughout mild winter season. it had been mild until that big storm and the one that dumped the 5 1/2 feet. they have been able to open three major lifts, a fourth today and a fifth one tomorrow. >> it's really been night and day. we've been able to open so much more terrain. really we couldn't ask for better timing with presidents week coming up. >> and the manmade snow is buried now? >> it's definitely buried. we'll make sure as cold temperatures commit. th

he's keeping us updated. >> thank you, christina. i was not so smooth as i was moving the camera around. looking toward 101, northbound at 680. this is our traffic shot. we see the volume of traffic. i moved the camera around in case we could see smoke. let me explain. look at the map, you see the south bay moving smoothly. aside from where the arrow is coming up toward the camera shot north 101 past 680 the first spot that shows slowing on schedule for traffic tuesday. but off of the freeway at 24th south of san antonio, actually where 24th street turns to mclaughlin a report of a fire. sounds like a small out building or a trailer on fire. then now there is a structure fire, one of the houses in the neighborhood also on fire so we're tracking that. it sound likes two alarms, they had to call for backup, that means local traffic control. mclaughlin, the on ramp is moving and no on or off ramps affected as far as i know. this is the surface street issue. here for the tri-valley a smooth easy drive westbound 580 starting to pick up th
