checking the forecast with meteorologist christina loren on wednesday, august 28th. this is "today in the bay." >> good morning to you. 4:30. i'm marla tellez, in for jon kelley. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's check the forecast with metrologist christina loren. >> good morning. welcome back, marla. temperatures this morning are pretty mild out there. you might not need a coat in places like san jose or sweater, for that matter. after in gilroy. 57 in wine country, santa rosa. today's going to be cooler but toasty inland. first, let's check on your drive with mike inouye. >> bay bridge toll plaza, a lot of focus on that for the next five days. we don't have a lot of slowing. i did see a set of flashing lights through the area. no reports on the incline. the entire approach, the maze moves smoothly. 880, slowing both directions between 980 and 5th. road crews were there overnight. we see slowing over the next few minutes but so far no big deal. construction going on as you approach the toll plaza. no problem from the san rafael bridge. that's an option over the wee

right now let's check with meteorologist christina loren. >> any relief for the firefighters christina? >> it depends. we're seeing less in terms of dry lightning strikes, however, they're really close to where that monsoonal moisture is coming in. i want to start with our red flag warning that has expired for the entire state of california. now we're just working with a couple red flag warnings posted for the pacific northwest. but the situation is improving as the cut-off low kept things so unstable finally starts to fizzle out. this is what we're talking about in terms of the monsoonal moisture, right now concentrated mostly over nevada. what we're expecting in the yosemite area is improvement weatherwise. winds that pick up in the afternoon, you just heard that firefighter talk about erratic conditions. it's really hard to dictate what those winds will do. it doesn't take much, but a 15 to 20-mile-per-hour gust to send traveling embers around the area. that's why it's been so difficult to contain so far. 20% to 40% humidity right now. in the morning is when we see the highest humid

let's check in with christina loren. again, warm, warm and warmer. >> it is going to be a pretty warm weekend. good morning, jon and laura. good morning to you at home. i want to start with your temperature change over the past 24 hours. we're running about three to six degrees milder than 24 hours ago. that's going to lead to an afternoon that's just about as warm as yesterday. some cities are actually going to end up a little warmer. this morning, look at the numbers. we're in the mid 60s about everywhere, 64 for san jose, 65 in sunnyvale. kicking off the day at 62 degrees san francisco, very close to your average high for this time of year already. this is what we're expecting, we stop the clock for you at noon. temperatures already at 90 degrees at lunchtime in antioch. it's going to be a warm day in the extreme east bay. more mid 90s headed your way. 70 on the way to san francisco. 84 degrees in rhett wood city. ly point out we have quite a bit more low cloud cover to start the day than yesterday. right now everythi

christina loren, let's talk about the conditions. not goating any easier for these guys. >> no. over the next couple days, a big question mark when it comes to the thunderstorms. not yet today. as we head through tomorrow and wednesday, we'll see the monsoonal moisture and thunderstorms pop up in the area. that could be a blessing or a curse. with the thunderstorms, you can get brief heavy downpours that could help the firefighting efforts. you also get really gusty winds to the tune of about 50, 60 miles per hour. that's why we're really concerned about the firefighting efforts. the winds over the weekend have shifted. they were coming out of the southwest, that was a moist ocean air, now seeing the winds out of the south-southeast. for us that means very dry air in the area. you can see from the smoke plume courtesy of nasa, how large it is. you see the area shaded in red. that's the size, the perimeter itself of the rim fire, roughly the size of chicago. that smoke is drifting 250, 300 miles plus away. there's air quality alerts i

christina loren is here to talk about what's happening today and beyond. good morning. >> good morning to you. we still have that threat for today. i set your radar back detecting those lightning strikes over the past 12 hours. look at this dry lightning. we actually had flood warnings in place for parts of fresno yesterday. today the area of low pressure is going to move further inland. so we do have a really good chance of seeing more of that activity, especially down in the south bay. now i set this back six hours. this is the area we're targeting for today. the western-facing slopes around san jose and the east bay hills above 1,000 feet. it was an active night. we're also watching up in the north bey as well. we don't want to leave you out because the chance isn't as great for you up there, but we'll still keep it in place. we're expecting the 80s in the north bay for today. wherever you live, above 1,000 feet, especially in the high country, you really want to keep your guard up for today. we're going to show you some spectacular photos from overnigh

. >>> check in with meteorologist christina loren. dry, hot weather conditions can add to the fuel of the flames. >> certainly. however in the bay area for the past three years it's been mile in terms of fire weather. this year, in particular, we're actually doing okay compared to most of the states. i can tell you there's a lot of dry fuel to burn, if anything is igniting. we are watching that today. red flag warning up for the bay area, north bay in particular. this year, 92,000 acres burned in california, just to give you perspective. that's the equivalent of 70,769 football fields. so as we head throughout the day today, we'll start to see the fire threat decrease. this is the area where we are concentrating on for the next 24 hours. winds possible southwest 15 to 25 miles per hour, gusts up to 35 miles per hour. the highest risk above 1,000 feet. hopefully we'll see that go down, that red flag warning finally, not extended after 5:00 p.m. tonight. cut off low is hard to track. look at all of the lightning and thunder over the sie

meteorologist christina loren, can you give us any good news? the only bit of good news i can give you, jon and marla, is these winds are not offshore breezes meaning they're not drying out. the southwesterly flow and humidity actually up a little bit this morning. it's going to help the firefighters for the next few hours. once we get into the afternoon, relative humidity is a product of temperature and plois tour. we are going to see the teens return. relative humidity is low later tonight. we got an update on the acres burned. this came in about an hour ago. 105,620 acres at this point. the elevations at 3,000 feet. this is a very dangerous situation because the higher you go up in elevation, the easier it is for the wind to move around. you lack the frick shen when you head up in the atmosphere. for us today we have a better scenario. we saw the red flag warning expire for the north bay. on wednesday, you probably notice not as humid out there. temperatures will be much more comfortable. done with the threat of dry lightning in the bay area.

christina loren, you've been watching this all summer long.re is making it rough for those guys. >> really rough out there. so far thisd summer we've seen 190,000 acres fwhurnd the state of california. this is the current setup for the rim fire near yosemite. want to she you on the map. the elevation is about 3,000 feet. whenever you go high up into the atmosphere, you lose that friction. so the winds are able to pick up and move around quite a bit easier. this is what we're working with for today. for the next 24 hours, conditions are going to improve. we'll see more of a west early flow, an onshore flow, us stained winds gusting 10 to 20 miles per hour. we could see locally heavier gusts as we get the sundowner winds in the evening. humidity has increased 20% to 40%. temperatures will drop to the mid 80s for today as the area of high pressure retreats to the east little bit. that's the good news, it will take the dry lightning strikes with it. meanwhile in the bay area, we have a welcome change headed our way. area of low pressure will fizzl

meteorologist christina loren checking in with us from the nbc bay area weather center. looks like a good looking forecast, christina. >> guys, we have it so great in the bay area. so blessed to be here, especially this time of year. we've had a mild season as a whole, but just because things have been pretty moist around here and we haven't had to worry about fire danger for the past week or so, we still need to be on the best of our behavior. that's because all of our resources are getting spread very thin. that's because of the rim fire burning in yosemite. we'll take a close look at the smoke plume. i'll show you that from nasa's viewpoint in a moment. this, of course, beautiful san jose. we're kicking off a monday with some pretty comfortable conditions. at 64 degrees, 64 for sunnyvale and 62 degrees to kickoff a new workweek where the kids are also going back to school. let's take you through your hour-by-hour changes. futurecast at 9:00 a.m., temperatures will be cool at that point, about 59 in oakland and san francisco. temperatures will get cooler as we get close

let's talk about the forecast with christina loren.a tough time with this rim fire. >> good morning to you, jon and laura and you at home. this came in about nine hours ago. 20% contained at this point. the wind direction has shifted. we're talking about 160,980 acres burned at this point. we are going to get another update this morning hopefully over the course of the next hour, hour and a half. it looks like the weather could actually help the firefighting efforts in the area. let me take it right to your futurecast and show you what i'm talking about. as we head through the afternoon and evening hours, you can seamon soonal moisture moving right over the area. we're also talking the potential for thunderstorms. with the thunderstorms you could get brief heavy downpours, gusty winds and new lightning strikes. a big question mark when it comes to today's weather. what i can tell you based on my expertise, i think the showers are actually going to help. i stop the clock again as we head through wednesday. another more substantial bout
