but let's begin with meteorologist christina loren.'s been tracking the storm. >> good morning to you. hopefully you were with us yesterday when we told you this was coming in. the good news is just like we thought, we're getting that subtropical moisture tap. that's the difference between getting maybe trace amounts of rain that you can't even measure and an half inch, which is what we've already received like half an inch. it's maintaining organization as it crosses the santa cruz mountains. typically the mountains are high enough to break that storm up so we get that rain shadow effect here in the south bay, but we have this steady stream of moisture coming in and we are expecting localized street flooding, even in the south bay area over the next couple of hours. this is the area we're focusing in on now for your morning drive. you have to take it easy of where for this point. the north bay picked up over an inch and a half of rain in some spots. so you want to take it easy because that is a really good total from one storm system.

christina loren there live. you got your sneakers ready.u look like you're in shape and ready to go. >> reporter: yeah, and it's a beautiful day out here, laura. just a beautiful day. you know what? laura, i really want you to hear this story. i am joined with a mother. this is amy cochran and her 4-year-old son holden. holden, unfortunately, when he was in your belly, you found out about this. tell me more. >> yeah, when i was 18 weeks pregnant, we went for just our normal checkup. thank goodness there was a technician there who actually moments after we found out we were having a boy, we found out that there was a pretty serious heart issue. so he was -- the moment he was born, because they knew, they were able to pounce right on him and give him everything he needed. since then, he's had one more procedure. he's definitely thriving, but definitely at some point in his future he'll need his pulmonary valve replaced, which is why we're here. the american heart association, they're funding medical advancements that really saved his life. th

we have team coverage, meteorologist christina loren watching the sky, but let's begin with nbc bay area's stephanie chuang in san francisco. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. we really haven't seen too much of the rain, a little light drizzle on and off. it's been really dry, though. it is out here in chinatown pretty common to see umbrellas, we've seen some this entire morning here, but nothing major. it is the first pacific storm since april, so at this point people say they are happy to see every drop. resembled a waterfall of embers as fairly strong gusts blew sparks from power poles overnight as a result of the mix of rain and dust that built up during the dry spell. one major reason why nearly 12,000 people across the bay area lost power. the chp is worrying about another impact, the one on the road with the oil that's built up. >> it definitely percolates up once we get the wet weather because, obviously, oil is a lot lighter than water so it rises up and it definitely poses a slippery hazard. >> reporter: he makes deliveries around san francisco, even the slig

we'll check in with meteorologist christina loren. but first let's look at the lights, beautiful. >> down in certainly california, i hate to say it they need that rain. we are in a drought and in southern california, they desperately need that rain. riverside valley is where you'll find palm springs and palm desert. it's a welcomed sight but we don't want it all at once. with the possibility of an el nino, we could be looking at a lot of rain, which gets going typically this month. what we typically see here in the bay area, though we haven't had a lot of average over the past couple years, temperatures right now are comfortable. we are going to see some average weather as we get into this week. today will be cooler than average. we're starting out really comfortably. i wanted to show you why. those wind arrows all pointing from the ocean to the land, that cool pacific air inland today. you don't have to worry about the thick fog on bridge today. if there is any, it will be right at the coast. plenty of low cloud today. it will take a
