the flag that once flew at ground zero on 9/11 was raised at the funeral of 9-year-old christina-taylor green, born on september 11th, 2001. last night, you may remember the president called for a democracy as good as christina imagined it. while across town, there was a leap of hope inside that university hospital where doctors trained in science and fact talked about miracles. last night, the president announced that congresswoman gabrielle giffords, struggling with that bullet to her brain, had opened her eyes. and today, we learned even more, and david wright is in tucson tonight to tell us about it. david? >> reporter: good evening, diane. the doctors here at this hospital indeed are sounding the most hopeful yet. not only did they confirm the president's bit of good news today, but they also told us that giffords is now moving on her own and even touching her wounds. just imagine the excitement in that hospital room when giffords, surrounded by the sisterhood from congress, suddenly opened up her eyes. >> we were saying, come on, gabby, as soon as you're out of here, we'll take yo

she remembers seeing the little girl, 9-year-old christina taylor green, about to meet her first congresswoman. >> she was standing in line. she was jumping up and down and saying, i'm next, i'm next. >> it was soon after she spotted someone else. >> i looked over my left shoulder, and at the time, the gunman was standing there. it just went from there. just gunfire everywhere. >> and all the while, people are falling all around you. >> yes. >> diving under a table and covering her head to survive, she then noticed giffords' staffer ron barber lying on the ground just a few feet away, shot twice. >> i crawled over on my knees. the first thing i thought about is two palms, applying pressure. >> what did you say to him? >> i just looked at him and said i'm going to try to help you the best i can. >> and late this week, we learned she met the man she saved. >> he kept telling me, i'm his hero, and i said, let's just make it be that i was your angel. so that's what we decided. >> you're more comfortable with angel? >> yes. heroes are my marine sons. those are heroes. >> but those grown boys, those

like most little girls she liked to sing and dance but christina taylor was also the only girl on herittle league team. she hoped one day to play in the major leagues and she was born to baseball. her grandfather dallas green managed the philadelphia phillies leading them to win the 1980 world series. a straight "a" student just elected to the student council, christina-taylor wanted to learn more about politics, so she went with a neighbor to the congress on your corner event hoping to meet congresswoman giffords. she was getting interested in politics and government and that's why she wanted to go and see the congresswoman? >> she got involved in watching the presidential election and really started to get excited about politics. >> she was only 7 years then. >> she was very mature for her age. >> very young age. >> she definitely had an opinion on the matter. my son was supposed to be there, too. >> how's he doing? >> he's hanging in there. they were very close. >> they were inseparable. >> he is doing pretty good right now, but i worry about him as he realizes it's more permanent.
