christine, i'll get you to weigh in on this.e have talked a lot, you and me, about gyres and patterns, and on sunday, 122 pieces, that gives a lot of people hope. should they have that hope? >> i think so. i is ernl certainly do. and nicholas brought up a point which a lot of us forget. there is a lot of garbage junk out there. the pollution bottles, plastic. and in this particular area, i think it's very common there will be, given the ocean currents and the gyres, it's going to come up and swell up, especially after a storm, it settles and then moves around. this could be -- this could be mixed in with what they are seeing in these 122 pieces. but we still just don't know. i am hopeful that they have a much clearer picture than they are telling us at this point, because it is an investigation, and we have to be sensitive that the experts on scene do not want to put out information that they'll have to backtrack from. so they're being very cautious in the information they put forth. and they still haven't made contact with it.

>> reporter: hi, christine. well, there are several military bases in crimea which are surrounded by troops. also, we're hearing from ukrainian authorities that several border posts overnight were attacked by these same military troops. they are wearing, though, insignia. again, russia has not acknowledged that these troops are theirs. on the streets of simferopol, where i am now, it is very calm. it doesn't feel as though there is an invasion or occupation as such. there are troops, though, darted around various locations, for example in front of the main regional and administration building. what you set a sense from here on the ground is that this is more of a war of information. so, there are people who are watching russian tv who believe one story, who believe that ultra nationalists are en route to crimea to try and disrupt the peace. and then you have those who are watching news coming from the west and from the ukrainian government who believe something different, and this is what is create these divisio

. >> and i'm christine romans. it is 31 minutes past the hour. let's start with breaking news, new developments in the search for malaysia airlines flight 370. now, officials in thailand confirming they have satellite images showing 300 objects floating in the south indian ocean in that search zone, and they believe they may be linked to the missing jetliner. look, everyone's looking at this to see, is there a debris field, how far away is it, and can they get to it quickly. meanwhile, the air search for flight 370 has been cut short by bad weather this morning. 11 planes evacuated from the search area in the south indian ocean just a few hours ago. now, look, they spent several hours looking for their best lead yet, 122 objects photographed sunday by a french satellite, but no luck yet. all while investigators dig deeper into the background of flight 370's pilot to find out if he could be the one who took this jetliner down. a lot of developments this morning. let's begin with the latest on the search off the coast of australia. andrew stevens l

christine, as we heard at the end of that report there, it could take years to recover the plane. do you agree with that assessment? >> unfortunately, i do. at this point we have gone so many weeks into this recovery effort. search operations that have been ongoing and we have not found anything. we're still looking for debris three-plus weeks into this. >> and does it you were you although a lot of debris has been spotted, none apparently is so far from the plane? >> >> it doesn't. south indian ocean there's a lot of ocean junk, garbage, depending on the current is moving around and swirling and churning and they have been working in a search area that at one point was 470,000 square miles, which is vast. they're now at 123,000 and they're still trying to make the search area much smaller, which they need to do. this is a vast area of ocean that they are searching for and the debris their finding is just going to keep sort of moving around and in some cases they might be chasing it. there's probably a lot more debris father north. it really will depend where they're moving the se

and christine, i want to start with you.d get that news just a few hours ago, before the malaysian prime minister spoke, that these objects were spotted by planes. something orange, something gray, and then an australian naval vessel was rushing to the scene. with your experience in this subject, what is the first thing that this ship will be doing when it arrives on the scene? >> well, unfortunately, the dimensions of this disaster are still unclear at this point. so we will need the empirical evidence of the black boxes, the voice recorders, to help us better understand why flight 370 was lost. the navy commander that we spoke with last night said they do have a ship that's heading to scene that will be carrying the towed pinger locater, the tpl, which will be able to reach or can reach maximum depths of 20,000 feet. the hope would be that the seas are calm and they can deploy this ctow-fish as some call it, into the ocean, and drag it behind the ship, trying to pick up acould you say it particulars. hopefully this particu
