christin ayers with how it all ended.t started like this. >>> drivers and spectators met their match when dozens of cops boxed them in on a sideshow. christin ayers with how it end. >> reporter: it started like this, drives spinning their wheels recklessly doing donuts at the port of oakland as close to 200 onlookers stood by. watch this car veer dangerously close to the crowd hitting the curb and a bystander. the event had been advertised on social media but the organizers of last night's oakland sideshow couldn't have picked a worse night. protestors were rioting nearby. 200 highway patrol officers had been called in from sacramento to keep protestors from walking on to oakland's freeways. when this happened, those officers promptly switched gears and surrounded the sideshow. cruisers on one side, sideshow cars on the other. a burning car somewhere in between. some drivers peeled out and fled successfully. others ran into a wall of highway patrol cars. officers swooped in and arrested them. dozens of people removed from

christin ayers has been checking on his condition. christin? >> reporter: yeah, that car jumped suddenly in front of the motorcycle officer. that is what caused the crash tonight. the officer is here hospitalized with serious injuries. a highway patrol officer hurt at the height of rush hour in a crash along 680. more than two hours this evening, 680 north was shut down. traffic backed up for miles. authorities say before 5:30, a van trying to avoid hitting a honda civic pulled into the car pool lane at 65 miles an hour right into the path of the officer on a motorcycle. >> that put the van in conflict with the motorcycle. the chp motorist was unable to stop or swerve. he went to ground. >> reporter: there is good news, the officer's injuries are not life threatening. the driver was not cited. authorities are still trying to figure out whose fault this was. reporting live, christin ayers, kpix5. >>> tonight, people up near the oregon border are waiting for the ground to move again. a swarm of earthquakes has hit the area for months so we asked

[ laughter ] >> reporter: the tax passed with 75% of the vote yesterday. it adds one cent per ounce to the cost of a soda in berkeley. that is 12 cents more for a can of soda. 32 cents more for a big gulp. and syrup sweetened coffee drinks will get taxed too. >> a lot of people don't like it. they say it is too much tax. >> reporter: employees at oakland's white horse liquor store have been hearing complaints about the tax all day. they hope berkeley's tax drives more customers to them. >
