christine brennan, thank you so much for joining us. this is just another terrible turn in what seems to be a steady stream of all news coming from women's gymnastics. >> to begin to fathom this terrible, dark nightmare, this awful labyrinth of lies and deceit that these mean, larry nassar a name many know, in jail now, serve a 60 year term, federal prison, for his sexual abuse of so many of these women with potential charges and jail time to come, and now coach john geddert who harked hand in hand with larry nassar side by side for at least a quarter of a century, maybe more, in michigan, at this gym in lansing, michigan, and we're talking hundreds of young women who were sexually abused, and that's one of the reasons there was such joy in the gymnastics community when geddert was brought to justice with the michigan attorney general announcing massive charges and then, of course, the news that he died by suicide as just another layer -- adds just another layer to it, almost unbelievable tragedy and a nightmare within something we expe

for more, i'm joined by christine brennan, cnn sports analyst and sports columnist for "usa today." nt with you. let's talk about the role of women in football and what we saw today on the sidelines as well. you have women coaching football. you have women officiating the games. how monumental is this change that we're seeing, and will we see more of it? >> it certainly was a first, bianna. obviously sarah thomas being the first woman to officiate an nfl super bowl game, and she was the first to be in the playoffs, and she was the first full-time referee back in 2015. and so that's fantastic. and by the way, she did a great job. if a referee, an official is basically invisible and doesn't call any attention to themselves, they've done their job, and she did that. especially at that goal line call early in the game in the second quarter. again, the right call when kansas city was able to stop tampa bay. there she was, and she made the exact right call, as you would expect from someone who is 47 years old and who has been doing this for a long time and is a real veteran. so a great win

christine brennan joins me now.er three golfer in the world, justin thomas, had this reaction. take a listen. >> i'm sick to my stomach. it hurts to see one of your -- now my closest friends, get in an accident. man i just hope he's all right. just worried for his kids, you know. i'm sure they're struggling. >> that's tough. woods is 45. thomas is 27. you have to imagine he idolizes tiger like most other young golf fans growing up. christine, you've been covering golf most of tiger's career. describe the impact on the game. >> it's been extraordinary. we're on a first-name basis. all these young golfers that have grown up with him, they haven't had a day where tiger wasn't in the news or wasn't their role model or part of the golf culture. and only one name, tiger. that's why it's such big news. we've lived through the ups and downs of tiger's career. there's been some incredible ups and incredible downs. when you think of the comebacks, he's on comeback three, four, five right now. he had multiple injuries, his fif

christine brennan is still with us. christine, give us a sense of what this means right now, what it means for golf, what it means for sports as we hope and pray he will make a complete recovery. >> this is a huge story, wolf. absolutely huge story. look what we're doing right now in the world. there's so much going on. it's tiger and it will be for several days. why is that? he has transcended golf long ago and moved into the stratosphere of culture and roll modeldom kind of status that we'll be studying 100 years from now. it's our culture, part of what we do. we go on a first name basis with these people, tiger, kobe obviously comes to mind. 13 months ago in southern california as well. obviously, very, very different tragedies, of course. and yet here we are again, talking about an athlete and the nation's love for an athlete and outpouring of not just golfers in this case but all people who have come to know him and like him, or people who didn't like him. certainly i've been as critical as anyone in columns over th

i want to bring in christine brennan on the phone. ine, we don't know, we are still waiting for details on this. it's hard to look at the pictures we are seeing of this vehicle and the condition it's in knowing he was pinned in there and had to be extricated from the jaws of life without having serious worry for the prognosis of tiger woods. ment are you hearing anything? >> brianna, at this point i'm just talking to a few sources. i have heard nothing yet. obviously, this is, as you said, the visuals here, the pictures are horrifying. this is tiger woods. he's 45 years old. he is one of the biggest and best names known in sports and really in our culture. and he's been a part of our culture now since the late 1990s. and so when you say the name tiger woods, everyone knows who he is. everyone knows his history. he would the masters less than two years ago in an amazing comeback. of late he had back surgery once again. he's had a lot of injuries, as you probably know. so he hasn't been playing golf. he was in l.a. for a tournament where

christine brennan i've been listening to you the last couple of minutes with brianna and want to put you on tv again. obviously it's awful. we don't know a lot as far as, you know, more specific on the injuries, but talk to me first about why he was in l.a. he was in a golf tournament just over the weekend, wasn't he? >> he was, yes. he was the pga tour was in l.a., and he actually appeared on television with the broadcasters with cbs for a couple of minutes to talk about his future because, of course, tiger woods is one of the biggest names not just in golf, brooke, as you well now but throughout sports. >> he's a legend. >> oh, my gosh. i mean, it's a first-name basis, tiger. and there are people now in their 20s who have grown up and have known a day without tiger woods as a force in their life, right, and as a part of our culture and bush and the conversation and the ups and downs of tiger's life. again, these pictures are really tough to look at, and you hope -- i've covered him for years. i know him. you just hope for the best and obviously great concern here, of course. as jou

joining us now, christine brennan, a sports columnist for "usa today." i have to say, as we sit here this morning, it's a much better situation than i think we all feared yesterday afternoon when the first reports were about jaws of life prying tiger from the car. when we had no word of his condition at all. it turned out the jaws of life were not necessary. we now know that he was conscience and talking when law enforcement got to the scene and we now know this morning that he's in the hospital recovering well. still, we just heard from dr. faust at brigham women's that the nature of the injuries, as reported there, has him concerned that perhaps there was a question of whether or not tiger woods might lose his leg. these are serious injuries. and i think the level of concern and the emotional roller coaster we were all on yesterday talked about the -- i think the cultural significance of tiger woods. >> oh, without a doubt, john. this man has transcended sports and golf and been a part of our culture not just for a few years, but a few decades. there w
