later, washington post columnist christine emma discusses consent and societal attitudes towards sex in the 21st century. now, dorothy roberts on the child welfare system. >> good evening, everybody. i am so excited to talk about this wonderful book with such a wonderful, brilliant colleague and scholar. dorothy, thank you so much for doing this. >> thank you, mark, for this conversation. taking time out of your busy schedule, i really appreciate it. >> it's my honor. i've long been a fan of your work. so, to have an opportunity to talk and engage directly is really wonderful to me. it almost feels like a clichÉd question, but i always ask because i think it matters. it's always the why this book, why now question. why this book, why now? >> well, i wrote a book on this topic 20 years ago called shattered bonds, the color of child wear fair, right after i discovered that the system called the child welfare system was actually a big state apparatus. that monitors black communities and takes children away and relies on that kind of terror in families to operate. that was actually right
