christine quinn is here. her new job -- head of one of new york's largest and most respected homeless-service agencies for women and children, called win. christine, nice to see you. >> thank you. >> so, your new job -- what's it like? >> seven weeks in, and it's amazing. you know, we at win are the largest provider of shelter and permanent housing to homeless families in new york. we house 4,700 people a night, 2,700 of whom are children. and the staff at win -- they're on the front lines every day, trying to help these families children. >> and when you talk about families, the women who are there -- most of them are single mothers. >> oh, yeah. 90 to 95 on any given time of our heads of households are single women with children. and you know what's really important? 40% of those women, when they enter our shelters, are working. so this idea that some people might have that homeless people aren't working or are lazy or whatever -- farthest from the truth. 40% are working but were unable to stay in their home

today mayor de blasio and christine quinn held an event together. >> the two of them teaming up to help the homeless. they were both here this afternoon, the mayor and christine -- >> reporter: smiling children receiving hugs from a team that may cause some to do a double take. mayor de blasio and christine quinn who said their friendship and passion to help the homeless transcends past political >> since i took this job seven weeks ago, i want to be clear and thank the mayor. i've been given nothing but the highest level of access to every person that i need to talk to. >> reporter: quinn who is now ceo of women in need, says teaming up with the mayor makes sense, especially when it comes to combatting the new phenomenon of the working homeless. >> there are a lot of people who share the value that we need to help people. particularly folks who have done everything right and find the economic reality not working for them anymore. >> reporter: the mayor today also saying he's doing more than just giving out presents. he's also implemented a new program for his folks will be working one-
