christine romans is in new york with that side of the story. good morning, christine. >> thank you, carol. i cannot stand the theatrics anymore from washington. let's talk about what's going to happen if there is a shutdown. national parks, museums, zoos, monuments, anything that's free probably is going to be closed because those national parks if you're in a camper right now at a national park you'll have a couple of days probably to clear out. many federal offices and programs from 700,000 to 825,000 people sent home, nonessential workers sent home. congress is considered essential. congress will still be paid, carol. rest assured congress will be paid even though congress has not done its job and could be putting us on the brink of a shutdown. look at other services here that are incredibly important, federal courts can remain open for ten days, enough operating functions for that, passport offices unless they're in a federal office building passports, visas will be issued. air traffic control, border protection, key parts of the department

let's go straight to christine romans in new york, also alison kosik to talk market reaction at the stock exchange. first, christine, what is the word from the fed. >> no taper. the fed is not ready to take the training wheels off the american economy. the fed saying while it could see the economy is improving, there is moderate economic recovery here, but it's just not enough to writhdrawal all that stimulus each month. how much? $85 billion of stimulus into the u.s. economy to try to keep the job market going, to try to keep the oxygen really flowing in the american economy, and it's not ready just yet to pull back on that. a very telling that the fed in its forecast, it always gives these forecasts for what it expected for the economy and the jobless rate to do, downgrading their expectations for a growth. the fed saying it sees 2% to 3% economic growth this year. down a little bit from what they thought. and 2% to 4% next year. that's a downgrade on the expectations of growth from the fed. it would like to see a target of 6.5% for the unemployment rate. ben bernanke and the folks on t

cnn business anchor christine romans explains. wn monday night at midnight but the administration officials i'm speaking to are more concerned about the debt ceiling. why? let me lay it out for you. doing a shutdown, mandatory spend would go not be affected. you would still see spending. a prolonged shut down koorg to moodie's would cut economic spending in half. but you still have spending. people would get their social security checks, for example but if the debt ceiling is not raised it's a whole other story. no debt ceiling at all you the date is important here. that's the date that the u.s. will have less than $30 billion on hand and the government can't borrow money. just means just like when your bank account is empty and you can't find a source of cash, the government will stop paying their bills. interest on debt, to like china, right? maybe social security. we can't pay social security to seniors. and medicare and medicare. you got 110 million people on one of those programs and you don't have enough cash on hand to cover
