let's get straight to chief business correspondent christine romans. christine, we look at this number, what should we actually be seeing. >> i'd like to see it bigger than this, 194,000 is way less than anybody thought. what we're seeing is a big summer hiring boom completely fizzled in september. it was a hurricane, don't forget. there was a delta variant that really was picking up speed and people are going back to school trying to get their kids back to school at the same time. you have an unemployment rate that fell to 4.8%. which is in a normal time would be almost full employment. that's a number on the surface that looks good. you don't see the massive hiring you need to go along with that. couple of things happening here. people still leaving the labor market, especially women. and we have got the participation rate fell, meaning fewer americans are actually considering themselves in the labor market. and we also have seen a lot of new business creation, so could also be that the government surveyors are calling households and saying are you em

cnn's christine romans joining us us now to explain. we were here on friday when you simply said things are different now. >> yeah, they really are. covid essentially broke the jobs market. fixing it won't be quick or simple. a setback as the delta variant rages through the american economy. it is still a pandemic jobs market. 194,000 jobs added back. very strong hiring scene earlier in the summer. the economy is down 5 million jobs since the pandemic began. it would take two years to recover all the jobs lost. now, the issue is not as simple as companies aren't hiring. many report they are. they would hire even more workers, but they can't find them. the theory was the fat checks were keeping people at home. but benefits expired and more people dropped out of the labor market altogether. it is an unprecedented mix of factors. parents can't find child care. kids are back in school, but there are not enough school bus drivers to get them there. wages are rising, especially for front line workers. companies must pay more to attract worker

business correspondent christine romans joining us now.ns, also recovering demand from the pandemic. so what are we expecting out of this meeting today? >> according to "reuters" this meeting has just wrapped up. opec and its allies have decided to stay the course with the new oil they've been pumping, 400,000 barrels per day, will continue into november. the next meeting will be in november. essentially the path of least resistance for oil prices continues to be higher. remember they took a lot of pumping out of the system when the covid -- coronavirus recession slammed the world. now they've been adding that capacity back in, but supply has not been increased as quickly as demand has increased. you can see that in crude oil prices. right now they're up some 3% again. brent crude above $80. you can see all of the oil complex is your paying $10, $15 a gallon for a tank more than you did a year ago. oil prices at a three-year high mean gas prices rising. gas prices are more than $1 higher than they were a year ago. this is one of those stor
