"the new york times" reports the houston police visited rapper travis scott in his trailer before the show to discuss the crowd. a source tells the times the chief told scott he was worried. >> yeah, that's right. they know each other personally. a criminal investigation is now underway. 50,000 people including scores of young fans were there friday excited for live music again after the event was canceled last year during the pandemic, of course. then within 15 minutes of the rapper starting his set the crowd began to crush towards the front of the stage. >> once travis scott came out, about 45 minutes before his set is when i knew things were getting a little bit edgier. it was definitely getting pretty tight and i knew anyone who was a smaller person was going to be definitely struggling to breathe and maintain their space. it was definitely chaos. about midway through is wh

christine romans is our business correspondent and john harwood is at the white house. as we look at what is happening on capitol hill, what we're getting in terms of those numbers this morning, there is a lot for white house to be happy about this morning. christine, break the numbers down for us. what does this tell us, especially the revisions for august and september? >> remember how concerned we were about the variant and holding back this summer hiring lull that we saw. it wasn't as bad as we thought. when you look at august, at first the government said there were 366,000 jobs created in august, they've revised that to 483. that is a really strong month of jobs gains. you look at september. they said 194,000. we were disapossibilitied by that number. it showed sort of this american engine of job creation slowing. that was revised too. these in normal times are verier big, big numbers. another 531,000 in october. it paints the picture of american employers who are aggressively hiring. you heard the labor secretary talk about how broad based the hiring was. it was

standing by to bring you the latest, let's begin with cnn chief business correspondent christine romans. christine, first of all, a big number above forecast after several numbers below forecast. but also revisions upward for the last couple of months. >> the picture here is very strong for hiring in october. and it is nice to see that summer lull was not as bad as we thought. in normal pre-covid times, this jobs report would have been historic. 531,000 net new jobs added back to the economy in october. across the spectrum, and wages up 4.9%. that means people are go back to work and getting bigger paychecks. you look at the trend of the year, you see that summer stall really and then roaring back here in october. these are numbers that economists tell me will continue to pick up as the delta variant is behind us and more and more people are vaccinated and people feel more comfortable going back to work and getting out there. looking at the unemployment rate, 4.6%, this is a very good number. at some point here, we'll see the participation rate get better as people come off the sideline

our chief business correspondent christine romans is joining us now. christine, of course, uncertainty is basically kryptonite for the markets. . >> exactly. there's so many things we don't know. we don't know how transmissible, if it undermines vaccines. we just don't know a lot. and that is really affecting markets. the s&p up 25% so far this year. you have investors taking money off the table and rushing into the safety of some of these safe havens like bonds. the stock market is selling off big. when you look at some of the categories, cruise lines, for example are down very big here. any kind of travel-related stock. and the worry here is that you would have some sort of new round of big restrictions around the world and lockdowns, and that would be damaging to the global economic recovery, wouldn't it? a lot of questions here. european stocks opened sharply lower. tokyo had the worst day in months, frankly. u.s. stock index futures have been down as much as 5%. that is a big one-day move. we are seeing oil prices tumble 6% here. there is this idea
