joining me now is christopher dickey, world news editor at "the daily beast." and msnbc contributor. christopher, great to have you this morning. secretary tillerson said there aren't many good options left. can the u.s. count on china to step up? >> reporter: well, let's hope so because really china is the best bet that we have to try and slow or stop the intercontinental ballistic missile development and nuclear weapons development of north korea, which we take to be virtually an insane regime. it probably isn't as insane as all that but let's look at really the stark question that looms ahead. if it comes down to a military option, we're looking at hundreds of thousands of casualties on the korean peninsula, huge instability on china's border. is that a risk worth taking to stop kim jong-un from having intercontinental ballistic missiles with warheads on them? some people in the united states might think that would be a risk worth taking if the trade-off would be between the capital of south korea and the capital of the united states of america hit by a north

. >> christopher dickey, thank you very much. keir simmons now. in talking about the precarious position that the president is in considering all of the things that are on the table in this conversation when it comes to president putin, it's hard to understand how he will approach this going forward not only speaking of the position that he's in with poland and eastern europe, but also considering russia's role in the u.s. elections. how much is riding on this conversation and considering russia's role in syria as well and speaking to what christopher dickey just touched on? >> reporter: well, a lot is riding on the meeting with president putin. the optics will be crucial and what actually comes out of it will be very important. let's just mention that president trump did talk about russia as destabilizing. that is a crucial criticism. so while he is not fully criticizing russia for intervention in the u.s. elections, he did seem prepared to criticize russia in other ways. so the question then is what will he say to president putin when he sees th

christopher dickey with us as well, world editor at the "daily beast." he joins us from paris.ussia and china are major objectors to new u.n. sanctions. president trump is just wrapping up talks with president xi today. how do you think they are going to be able to come to some type of common understanding on where and how to try and get north korea in line? >> well, all of the countries you mentioned russia, china, japan, south korea, of course united states, has fundamental key concerns. all of these nations do have a joint interest in north korea's nuclear ambitions and nuclear delivery technology for moving forward. all of them have that. donald trump would do the world a great deal of good if he could figure out a pathway to align the interest of those nations in such a way that north korea felt it had no other choice but to move. guess what, that is the model we used on iran. russia, china were very helpful to us in helping create the iran deal. donald trump has been critical of that arrangement and deal. so right now we don't have all those nations on the same level. we

christopher dickey, msnbc contributor and world news editor at the daily beast and andy barnes, senior white house correspondent at "the hill." chris, great to have you here in the united states. what was the readout, though? you always have your thumb on the pulse of what western europe is thinking. what is the take away out of the g20? >> well, you know, the standard take away is that trump was very isolated there. the united states was very isolated there because of the american position on climate change and the climate accord in paris, but you know, this issue of the russian hacking is also isolating him from the rest of the european and other members of the g20, because they are all very concerned that russia is going to try to do the same thing to their elections. one of the characteristics of the g20 and most of the g20 is that they are democracies. they are either full fledged democracies or trying to be democracies. the idea you can have the russians with impunity playing around, or worse than that, waging cyber warfare on democracies is very disturbing. >> terms are odd coup
