joining me now is christopher hill, former ambassador to iraq and south korea and also msnbc diplomacyt. welcome to you, sir. this one traveled more than 400 miles and missile experts are saying that is definitely far enough to reach some u.s. military bases on guam. how urgent is this situation right now? >> well, this situation has been urgent for some time. clearly they are testing a whole new generation of missiles, missiles that operate on solid fuel, meaning that it would be very hard to hit them when they stand them up, they'll be no time. they could fire them off immediately. and moreover, this kind of ends whatever it was, ten days of day tont where he slowed down this kind of stuff. we have a big problem. they don't care about this new south korean president who campaigned hard on the idea we need better dialogue with north korea, so much for that idea. it's another in your face move by north koreans. >> i'm curious what you think of this roller coaster period in this way, the president has said he'd be honored to meet with kim jong-un then on thursday a north korean official

joining me, christopher hill, an msnbc diplomacy expert and served as ambassador to south korea.or joining me. what is different about this test? >> well, first of all, it is clearly one of these new generation of solid fuel missiles. it is larger than some of the previous ones so hence the idea that it could carry a heavier halo. namely a nuclear weapon. it is interesting, it bent 450 miles but it was sort of toward russian coast. i don't think we should make too much of that. the fact is, it came just a couple days after the south korean elections. and for the south korean president who campaigned very hard on the idea of more dialogue with the north koreans, it is a slap in the face to the guy. >> so how important is it for to us get on the same diplomatic page when it comes to north korea? both with china, we know that, but also with russia? >> well, yeah. we need to work with russia. and putin, he did condemn the missile launch. but then i think he made comments that were aiding and abetting the north koreans by saying we need move to dialogue. >> stop scaring them and retur

. >> courtney, please stay with us, because we are going over to fo former ambassador christopher hillreaction of this. we know that it is not entirely unusual, and we don't know everything about it yet. and what is your impression? is he making another sort of a bluster at the world around himmhim him, or is this significant in some other way? >> well, it is significant for at least a week or so the north koreans seemed to have at least throttled back some of the testing program. and the so, here they are going at it again. i think that it is going to be a challenge for the trump administration, and the trump administration has a tendency to sort of claim that they were kind of on the right track with north korea, and here they are going at it again. now, it is interesting, because we have not heard any plans for having the sixth nuclear test as of yet. they have seemed to be ready for that, but they are also on kn notice of from the chinese who are making it clear that whatever you are doing, no nuclear test, so they are thinking that they are still flying below the radar screen so t

i'm joined now by four-time ambassador christopher hill, whose last post was in iraq, and my panel isck with me, the nation's joan walsh, gop strategist evan siegfried and ozzy pabera. i'm getting there. ambassador, i want to start with you. is angela merkel right? is the u.s. no longer a reliable nato partner? if that is the case, what does it mean? >> well, it's a very harsh statement and she's a very careful, prepared person, so she obviously knew what she was saying. i would say -- i'm quite surprised that the european swing was so bad. how difficult is it to go to a nato meeting, thank people for the plaque on 9/11 and reiterate the commitment to article 5 and say we're in it and all for one, one for all, and oh, by the way, people should really keep up their defense spending. not a hard message to deliver. yet, he completely failed there, and in cons trast to the sort of love in he had with the saudis. it was a bizarre overall trip and i think it may have left our relations with the sunni arabs better and our relations with our european allies worse and i think angela merkel was

ambassador to iraq, christopher hill, appreciate your joining me.ked in the region, so how do you expect the president to be b efed there given his statements and the travel ban quite frankly? >> well, quite frankly, i think he's going to be received with quite a mixed view, but certainly, the saudi government having been very upset and very frustrated with t obama administration has decided to kind of make him their favorite american president. so, it's all gone swimmingly, interestingly, most of the discussion has been about the terrible iranian and how they're destabilizing the region. little of it of the discussion being about the extreme sunnis and what the saudis need to do to try to reign that in. it was rather noticeable to see the secretary of state allude to iranian human rights issues and just completely whistle past the issues of saudi human rights, so, we have a very different approach in the middle east. goenl are any concepts of middle east, of human rights. and we'll have to see whether he can sell this to the congress when he gets r
