here's christie smith.spoke to sea of supporters who came to the stand for asians rally in san mateo. the 13-year-old organized it after a series of attacks on asian-americans that has caught national attention. >> i thought this is not okay. i have to do something about this. i told my mom i want to start a rally. >> reporter: she got help from an antiracist coalition. hundreds of people showed up stoon matteo central park. >> there are so many people came out today to support raising awareness against anti-asian violence. >> reporter: many talked about the need for support in the community, and they want victims to not be afraid of reporting crimes, something organizers say is crucial. >> i do think a lot of people think it doesn't happen here, it's the bay area, and it does. i hope it raises awareness, and i hope, again, it makes people feel like they're being supported. >> reporter: children and families carried signs reflecting their feelings as they marched around the corner. there were more speeches

christi, what was it like out there? >> terry, you know, in light of these robberies and attacks that we have seen, people are really pulling together here in oakland. i want to step aside so that you can see the size of the crowd. there is still quite a few people out here, but i tell you earlier there were many, many more. now, there are speakers here talking about solidarity among different communities and healing. they came to madison square park in oakland. several community groups and the oakland coalition, a response to the violence or robberies that we've seen targeting the asian communities. and victims are often elderly. it was a diverse group of people that talked about cross cultural unity and education. of course ways to keep the community safe and culturalty competent services. but also making investments to address underlying causes of violence that impact many communities and keeping a community perspective on public safety. >> this is a time for us to come to unity in this moment because we do need to wo
