christy smith is live at the ferry terminal in oakland. it has been packed with people. christy, how are they doing out there? >> reporter: well you know, you caught us in between boats. it's actually looking pretty quiet right now. one of the options that people seem to be liking is the ferry to cross the bay. as we've been talking about, b.a.r.t. is just not an option in and out of san francisco. i happened to speak to a spokesperson and he's saying basically travel is up about 24% between oakland, alameda and san francisco. they are offering up and downed service. lines are moving, but they are long. a b.a.r.t. spokesperson says from there the work is going well. busses are set up around 20th and broadway in oakland moving people in and out of the city. the ride is taking about 20 minutes. b.a.r.t. is still running, but, again, just not in the transbay ii. rider shich is about half of what it would be for a normally day. workers are replacing worn out rails. b.a.r.t. put the word out some time ago that this would be happening. but the ferry certainly is popular. >> mos

christy smith is live with more including reaction from folks on the beach. christy? >> reporter: it's drawing a number of curious people to the beach to take a look at what's going on. also we're told a team from the marine mammal center is on hand. you can see them working down there. what they say is this is a humpback while carcass. it was discovered this morning, according to the spokesman for the certain. they're going to collect samples and then workers from the center will keep on eye on it in the tide to determine exactly when they can do a that cropcy. it concerns them because there are been other dead whales recently. >> this is really sad to see. this is the third one i've seen in the last couple of months. so not sure what's going on. but it's really concerning. >> now two dead whales washed up in the area in may and april, the cause of death unclear. one thought to possibly be due to a ship strike but we're told there was no conclusion on that to absolutely confirm it. cause of death is unknown. marine mammal center on the scene. we're hoping to check in

nbc bay area's christie smith is at the bay bridge toll plaza in oakland. christie, says they have evidence that the woman actually made it to the shore. >> reporter: that's right. i spoke with the chp and they are still working on this case of the woman they believe went 70 feet down into the water. they're thinking that it's very likely that she made it out, may have flagged down a ride. they want to make sure and make sure she's okay. it all started when a stolen nissan spun out and crashed on the decline of the bay bridge early this morning. when chp officers arrived, they say a woman wearing a black dress and no shoes raced from the car to the bridge's bike path. as they approached, she climbed the rail. >> she went into the water. we don't know if she fell in, jumped in. can't say for sure. we knew she went into the water. approximately a 70-foot drop into the water. >> they believe she floeted under the bridge. the chp, helicopters searched for hours but found nothing. in the middle of the search, they got reports of calls of a woman trying to flag

nbc bay area's christie smith is live in burlingame. and christie, they had to shut this road down yesterday. the shutdown tonight is apparently also needed. >> reporter: that's right. pg&e is saying it's because they need to string up new power lines across the 1500-foot span that runs right across the freeway. but you can see already they have poles in place with guide ropes and pulleys. what that will do is help move the power lines across all lines of highway 101 late tonight and overnight. right now traffic is moving. this started friday night when according to pg&e a third-party contractor hit a transmission tower with high voltage power lines as y lines causing it to collapse. 101 was shut down. it created major back-ups even onto city streets. it reopened saturday afternoon. but today pg&e says much of the prep work has already been done so, they'll be ready to go. >> we are on an aggressive schedule. our crews have been working throughout the past 24 hours to make sure we can get this work done in the allotted period of time. so

christie smith joining us live from burlingame with more on this. >> reporter: right now pg&e crews are here working hard on a temporary repair. as you said, these are high-voltage transmission lines that came down. and we're told, as you said, additional work will be needed tomorrow night. i wanted to show you video of what it looked like when 101 finally reopened late this afternoon. a big relief for drivers who were frustrated and caught in the gridlock. here's what happened. it was late last night around 9:30, and what we're hearing is that a third-party contractor actually, crews bumped into this transmission tower. it came toppling down. drivers again very frustrated as the power lines were draped across the freeway. a spokesperson for the utility says a temporary fix is going in. that's 125-foot pole. they will do the job of the tower. the second part is spanning 1,500 feet of wire across the freeway. that's going to happen tomorrow. and they say they have to shut it down for safety reasons. they say that the main artery, of course, between san francisco and the peninsula, was sh
