in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> so we know high prices are high. gas stations are really high right now. we're going to dig deeper into why california is so high. joining me tonight is sergio avila with aaa. thanks for being with us on this friday night. we are feeling the pain. why are gas prices so high right now? >> there's a couple of factors actually. typically, one, after labor day, we start seeing a dip in demand as kids go back to school, summer travel season is kind of over. we didn't really see a dip in demand until earlier in november this year. so there's been some unusual demand as well as the price of crude oil has stayed well above $80 a barrel. and when we talk about crude oil, that accounts for about 60% of what you pay at the pump. so when prices of crude oil are getting higher and are very high, then that is reflected at the gas stations. so those two things together are some of the main reasons why we're seeing these extraordinarily high prices. >> okay. sergio, could they go even higher, or have we capped out at this high point

here's christie smith. >> not good for the neighborhood. >> at 24th, people see a lot from george's market and aren't happy with the plastic barriers and the median that went up a few weeks ago. >> a lot of people sometime they come and you have the stop sign and you look at the yellow one, and he go. and never he stop. that's a problem for the neighborhood. >> while some neighbors told us the barriers do help them feel safer walking, we're told some drivers just go around. the barriers were added to address concerns about drivers using shotwell, which is a slow street, as a cut through. they also prompted an online petition by the latino cultural district. >> just a shockwave through our community because 24th street, and everybody knows that that's where carnival takes place, cinco de mayo, the cesar chavez parade, the san francisco low rider council cruises. >> the petition noded the community was disproportionately affected by the pandemic and the barricade could hurt recovery. it also said the barrier isn't just physical but a psychological one that triggered the trauma of displacemen

nbc bay area's christie smith spoke with the woman who is recovering and how is she. >> reporter: well, right now she's resting at home, but still taking it day by day. she explained what happened. she says that a car drove by and that her partner was hit about since times. she was struck about three times incluing once in the left eye, as you can imagine very painful, and she says she immediately couldn't see anything. we spoke with zoe who is still stunned about what happened just afternoon midnight on october 30th. she said they had done some work at outside lands, got on a bus and eventually got off and waited for someone to pick them up. someone struck them with paintball pellets repeatedly and drove off. >> it hurt very badly. i couldn't see. i finally got to like see it in a mirror or like with the phone, and i calmed down a little bit. we were going to the hospital. they haven't -- they didn't tell me anything there besides that i had an eye and then the doctor that i've been seeing this whole week actually was on call, came and saw me there and was like this is our plan. >> re
