how important is this car to chrysler?maker and you can't make it into this segment, it--it--you're doomed. >> it's got a little italian flair? >> yeah. just enough to make it interesting, and it avoids all the pitfalls of being italian, yeah? >> [chuckles] mechanically, it's good? >> mechanically, it's outstanding. >> the darts produced at the belvidere plant are not just for u.s. consumption. marchionne plans to begin exporting them to more than 60 countries. when he took over chrysler in 2009, this plant had 200 workers. by the end of summer 2012, there would be 4,500. what do you think of american workers? >> i think the world of american workers. what happened here at chrysler would have been impossible without the commitment that they've shown, absolutely impossible. when i was looking at this deal back in 2009, i snuck into jefferson, our plant that now makes the grand cherokee. and i'll tell you, if i had any reservations about doing this deal, it was after i saw the state of that plant. and the people that fixed t

tremendous success for chrysler . they're driving the success of a chrysler and fiat. company very focused on the american marketplace and american production here. chrysler is a good example of the outsized impact these three american companies have on auto manufacturing. chrysler is a much smaller company than toyota. chrysler produces far more cars in the united states then toyota does. host: have they always been free traders? guest: i think so. we have production in some of those other markets. very focused on producing cars here and exporting those cars. this is the tip of the spear of the great renaissance in american manufacturing. if the united states will be a global power, we have to make things. it makes sense to make cars given the magnitude of the supply chain and the scope of the supply chain. we're big buyers of steel and glass. it makes sense to focus on the auto sector. almost every country wants to have a vibrant auto sector. they have seen the transformation it has had on the american economy. host: what is your group headquartered in washington? gu

guest: i would suggest that you press your case with chrysler. i would try going on-line, contacting chrysler through any channel view of god. contact the general manager of the dealership -- channel that you have. contacted general manager of the dealership. dealers are independent businesses for the most part. automakers have some sway with them. did not have that much control. - they do not have that much control. if you have a problem with the dealership, it is reliant on the customer to find some way to the dealership to sit down and make that work. beyond that, there are a few authorities coming on line, the customer product safety commission, the ftc. state level, you have the attorney general post office. office.ney general's those are a few of the channels. if it is still an issue, i would suggest researching those. host: you saw a number of sales. but how much of that can be attributed to these kinds of incentives that automakers offered? is that still profitable for them if they have to give away a lot? guest: incentives did go up this

chrysler is going from bankrupt to breakout. the automaker made $1.7 billion in 2012, and profits could touch $2.2 billion this year, a huge improvement from 3 years ago when chrysler sputtered its way to a taxpayer bailout. the ceo is promising bonuses to employees because of the comeback. chrysler has limited exposure to europe, but has yet to gain traction in china. shares of chesapeake energy shot up following news the company's ceo will soon bid farewell. shares rose 6% in yesterday's trading session, closing out the day at $20. chesapeake ceo aubrey mclendon announced earlier this week he will leave the company in april. mclendon has been under review for months by federal regulators after reports that mclendon used company funds for personal gain. reuters reports that mclendon will leave the company with full compensation, plus stock awards, all totaling $47 million. china is on a fast burn with coal and shows no signs of letting up. according to a new report, coal consumption in china increased 9% compared to last year.

chrysler is going to have a few more on the road. the issues with those have been mostly around fueling. honda had a natural gas experiment running for many years in california. it helped you buy the little fueling kit that you can put in the garage but people didn't sign up. they're very clean. they have a decent amount of range. but the cost once again tends to outrun the benefits for most consumers. and while they're popular in lots of other parts of the world, especially foreign countries, latin american countries, the benefits here have yet to be proven out versus the established with doing things. i think actually you'll see auto makers p go more to diesel vehicles as an alternative somewhere between gas and hybrids. host: what car do you zphrive what would you like to drive? guest: i drive a mazzda 5, a small mini van. a little bit of both worlds. i need three rows of seats in my vehicle. what i would like to drive changes from day to day. kind of depends what's in front of me. i got to drive a tiny two seater, and a bugati. a

everybody was up, ford of 2%, gm up 5%, toyota up 9%, chrysler up 10%.these are interesting to take a look at because we have the hard numbers and how much each of these automakers sell in terms of cars. for 2012, ford was up almost 5% and sold 2.3 million vehicles. gm of 3.7%, they are the big winners, 2.6 million vehicles. toyota up 26% after the tsunami and the mess they have had, so they're number three, and chrysler up 20% on the year, and it only bodes well for the future and really quickly just got off a conference call, he said he thinks they will sell as industry 15.5 million vehicles next year and that inventory problems ahead, they got rid of it, brought the inventory numbers way down. it is an example for the u.s. government perhaps to get often unsuitable fo fiscal path. cheryl: great example of that. happy new year, by the way. >> appreciate it. cheryl: ask yourself this question, would you spend a dollar on a reusable cup from starbucks? they're selling them today, giving a dime discount when they bring in the reusable cups for a refill. h

chrysler up, double digits again which was a surprise.eas automakers did better in december, largely. vw up 35%. honda was up double digits. so was hyundai. only one down on december of anyone was nissan. now take a look at year-end because this was the last month of the year so who did well year-end? again you look at american automakers but they did much better last year. the japanese obviously recovered better. toyota up 27% on the year. chrysler up 21%. they had a great year all the way around. honda was up. hyundai is up. everyone was up. it was a good year. i tell you we were on the conference calls today. mark reuss at gm saying he thinks next year will be even better. maybe 15 1/2 million selling rate. toyota says they will sell 100,000 more cars than they did last year. look at the stocks. gm and ford both largely up this year or today on trading and toyota not so much. what do you think was the best-selling car in the world? liz: i'm going to say, can i have two choices? >> no. david: just one. >> toyota corolla? david: hold on.
