nearly two years ago chrysler recalled 1.5 million of the vehicles.e than 50 people died when the gas tanks caught fire many crashes. jeff pegues is investigating this. >> reporter: 23-year-old kayla white was killed last november when her 2003 jeep liberty burst into flames after being struck from behind on a michigan highway. she was eight months pregnant. cody campbell was her fiancee. >> i thought i was the luckiest guy in the world and then i found out she was pregnant and i knew i was the luckiest i go in the world. i don't feel like that anymore. >> reporter: the autopsy report shows fire killed kay lamp she had no other injuries. jerry thurswell is her family's attorney. >> but for the gas tank exploding, she would be alive today. >> reporter: in 2002 to 2007 jeep liberties and 1992 to 2004 jeep grand cherokee, the fuel tank hangs below the rear bumper and can be punctured. the national highway traffic safety administration sent this letter to chrysler which said, "in our tentative view, there is a performance defect and a design defect that p

chrysler said that we will keep right on building. they announced that their building would be probably taller than 1000 feet. well, at about this time they got a plan for a 80 story in person building. -- 80 story empire state building. they wanted something as tall as they can get. they were told by the otis elevator company. why? the cables would collapse under their own weight. they said, ok, 80 stories it will be. 1000 feet. now, if chrysler stops at 950 or so, we will be taller than they will be. we will probably have an enclosed observatory. we will have an open sky observatory with a 360 degree view of the city. it was a miraculous plan. but, just as chrysler had full the bank of manhattan, so before -- so he fooled raskomb and smith. they kept on building. they sneaked the distinguishing spire a top the chrysler building, which took it to 1046 feet. well, as far as raskomb was concerned, chrysler was a pipsqueak. yet only been in business for five years. he was an electricity best him. -- he was not going to let chrysler best

everybody knows chrysler but my editor did not know there was a person called walter chrysler.that was kind of embarrassing to them. he came from the kansas plains he was an oil boy and got a job with general motors and the new age and in 1928 after he introduces the first car in his name the chrysler six he decides to build the tallest building in the world and everybody is watching. the same day he makes that announcement a group of speculators come downtown to build the building that is now the truck building. and they announced they would build the tallest building in the world and it is the sky race for two years between wall and chrysler. in 1929 just before the crash of the new york newspapers named the winner as wall. that chrysler would not be beaten. he builds in the cone of the building at the top inside the tower he had his engineers built along skinny needle and in one day and nobody knows exactly when he raises it into the sky than the chrysler building is the tallest structure he wanted to build the eiffel tower as well. he wins the race but loses 11 months later

chrysler missed estimates despite sales increasing nearly 6%. ford's numbers were off by 2% much worse than expectations. the standout was general motors posting a 4% rise, better than expectations as trust sales surged. shares of fiat chrysler and ford slumped while general motors rose a fraction. philip lebeau has more on last month's auto sale. >> reporter: pardon the pun, but february auto sale ss were at $16.23 million below estimates 16.6 or $16.7 million. for the major auto makers almost all reported sales below wall street estimate ford being the one that reported declining sales with sales dropping 1.9%. what happened last month? blame it on the weather. storms really hurt showroom traffic, especially in the northeast where sales fell by as much as 50% in some markets because of the repeated snowstorms. add in ice storms in the southeast late in the month and that's a big reason sales slowed down in the month of february. that said, a couple of bright spots. pickups and suvs in heavy demand. gm truck seamales up more than 30% last month
