ford and chrysler tended to just build scaled down versions of it. it is a rear mounted air cooled engine, which makes it quite different from american cars. makes it less expensive. with air cooled you don't need a radiator. less production, less expense in building it. it also makes the car to handle with the driving wheels in the back in the traditional car, we come to expect it to handle in a certain way when we're turning around corners. the core vair does not have as much up front and it was prone to oversteer. when you steer it in one direction or the other, it would steer more than you intended with your input to the steering wheel and that could be very dangerous. in fact, there were a number of serious accidents involving corvair. a comedian in the 1960s who was well known passed away in an accident in a corvair. then the public started to catch on largely due to the work of ralph nader. he wrote a book about the industry in general, about safety, saying they were saving money by not putting certain features in cars. but there was a chapter
