>> you're right, chuck. there is so much overlap, what we've heard from someone planning the committee meeting, intel, for both the house and senate side, they wanted to separate those matters of personal and security concerns to the issue that brought it to the table in the first place. originally asking petraeus to testify when he was cia director and that was the benghazi matter. so the officials are here from the top people of intelligence, the director of national intelligence, cia and fbi, and they're trying to piece together really some inside information that members of congress have said they've been unable to get about the time line. who knew what, when. why when ambassador stevens had requested security, had talked about concerns he had, about the potential for more attacks in libya, why were those not addressed in a way that would have prevented his death and protected he and the three ours who were killed. what i'm getting from people here, they recognize there are national security implications

i'm chuck todd. the storm recovery is just beginning and as victims try to put their lives back together, the frustration is beginning and it's mounting over just how long that recovery process will take. at least 74 people have been killed by the storm. millions of homes and businesses are still without power. new york city is grinding back into business a little bit and that's producing a traffic nightmare. the traffic problems are so bad that governor andrew cuomo has declared an emergency and there's a mandate of three people per vehicle for cars entering manhattan between 6:00 a.m. and midnight there. are long lines across the region. wednesday along the garden state parkway in hoboken, about a quarter of city is still flooded and 90% is without power. national guard troops are delivering food to people stuck in their homes. limited service on 14 of the city's 23 subway lines but many trains will have gaps in their routes. many others will remain dark. the mta has waved fares on su ways, trains,

chuck todd across democracy plaza from us. and with us here in the studio, moderator of "meet the press," david gregory and andrea mitchell. i took notes during peter alexander's report. the romney campaign, exceedingly confident. what makes them say that? >> well, some of it is just argument. some of it is they argue there is something happening out there that is kind of a gauzy argument to make. but it's about gop intensity in battleground states. they say 2008 is not the comparison. the gop brand was battered after president bush. mccain was not the candidate under the conditions we see today. and there is going to be something of a wave that carries governor romney. they also make the argument that romney was not disqualified by president obama. and that was the intention. the favorable numbers about equal to where president obama is. he's in this thing very much winning among independent voters. you put all of that together, they think pennsylvania is real. that's the case they make. they do realize that in a lot of these

don't laugh, chuck. when you get an absolute provable leading indicator you will never let it go either. so i've got one. i've looked at all the numbers today. all the numbers seem to point to a mild victory for obama. none seem to point for a victory for romney. what do you know so far? >> i can tell you the body language of the campaign, talking to the two campaigns. the obama folks don't think they're trailing in a single battleground state and this is the day before the election. that's not to say they think they win every one of the nine battlegrounds if you include north carolina in that larger nine. that's how confident they are. that's how much they believe that they have done enough of what i would call the building the flood walls, if you will, with the early vote and the absentee. and what their turn in operation is. and i the tell you what you hear out of republicans and out of the romney pain is simply we're counting on momentum. we know the core republican party is enthusiastic. that's what

i'm chuck todd. right to my first read of the morning. just when you thought the petraeus story couldn't get more complicated and troubling. it did. lots of headlines to get to on this. another top military general linked to the scandal, marine general john allen, the top american and nato commander in afghanistan. according to a u.s. senior defense official the fbi uncovered between 20,000 and 30,000 pages of e-mails between the general and jill kelley. now kelley is the woman whose initial complaint to the fbi led to the discovery of evidence about the affair between general petraeus and his biographer paula broadwell. defense secretary panetta's comments on the scandal and his future in the obama administration. then there's the fbi agent and friend of jill kel yae's. he's now subject of an internal fbi probe himself for inappropriate behavior. let's get into the details. overnight the pentagon announced this, that general allen's nomination to be allied supreme commander over all of anywnato been delayed and panetta has asked them to

"i'm chuck todd. the next few weeks are going to feel repetitive. lots of public posturing and little change. there will be one flash point every day or so that might grab headlines but ultimately they won't matter much in hindsight. and then around friday, december 14, something will begin to break. so goes the story that is the fiscal cliff. the president is stepping up his outside game with events this week to 0 build public support. some call it posturing for his preferred combination of tax ineeses and spending cuts. a contrast from how the white house conducted itself during the 2011 debt ceiling standoff. ultimately this fight comes down to another number, 218. the number of house votes needed for a deal. and it's not clear that his efforts will persuade 100 to 120 house republicans who are needed at a minimum for boehner to get a deal done to get to the 218 overall. remember these republicans believe just as fervently as the white house does that they have their version of public opinion on their side. why can do we think this? when it comes

you and chuck and i have been communicating about it. i'm told that he was at the white house yesterday, that while the people he was supposed to meet with yesterday at langley were told he had gone for a meeting with the president, in fact, did not see the president personally yesterday, that he is expected to see the president later today. this is still all in progress. that it is not now accurate to say that he will be leaving the administration or that any resignation has been offered or requested. but as we all know, there have been some tensions. a lot of controversy over benghazi. he and the president were never close initially during the transition period when the president was running for office and then during the transition when he was coming into office. and brian, david petraeus has been a star and a star player, but this has been an awkward transition at best over at the cia. anything you want to add to that are or check? >> some of the initial coverage when he was named a few people were surprised that this was, given the

chuck, a lot of moving and fast moving parts here. what can you tell us? what's the latest? >> i can tell you what aides will say in answer it to that question off answer. certain things you can say on camera. i got a more blunt answer which is somewhere in between. they don't feel like talks are stuck but they aren't moving fast enough. there's concern in the obama administration that not enough is being done. there's concern hamas doesn't feel that it's ready to stop the rocket fire into israel which as far as the united states is concerned and ben rhodes made this clear, that's the number one priority before nip other part of this negotiation is done. when you think of the time line, the president up late after all of the summit. he's here for a couple of summits. gaza has overshadowed all of that. he was up late. he was up with morsi and netanyahu. morsi is the conduit into hamas. the united states doesn't have any direct conversations with hamas. the conduit is morsi. gets off the phone with netanyahu. decides to call morsi back. after that, the president and the secret

chuck, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, veronica. the president was only here on the ground for 12 hours, the first american president to visit myanmar, the country formerly known as burma. he was greeted by a sea of locals. some of it was spontaneous, some very organized. school-aged children in school uniforms waved the american flag and the myanmar flag. the president met with the official leadership here, played tourist, visiting a famous buddhist attraction here, a 2,000-year-old temple. he also went to aung san suu kyi's house, democracy activist who was under house arrest here in this country for years. the president went to her house, had a few words with her. but the centerpiece of his visit was a speech at yangon university where he laid out the case for why he's here, why he thinks myanmar can still be a thriving democracy. he used a little bit of the evolution of the american democratic story as motivation. here is a little bit of that. >> i stand before you today, the president of the most powerful nation on earth, but r

i'm chuck todd. let's see where we stand this hour and how the president pulled off a win lastnight. the president put together a decisive victory last night. falling short of the votes he won in 2008 against john mccain. but he had 303. romney 206. florida's are still on the table. the state does technically remain too close to call. miami-dade county is counting 20,000 absentee ballots they tell us. that's what they're counting right now. that's in miami-dade. that appears to be the largest chunk of vote. if that breaks away the way they're going, it's impossible. i guess nothing's impossible. it's improbable. it looks like president obama is going to get that one too. it'll be 323 electoral votes when all is said and done. but let's go and show you how the president did it, if you will. i want to go to ohio because ohio was a big deal at the time. what was interesting here is where the margins were. it was all margins. this wasn't -- this was reduplicating the map. here's what the county map looks
