i am chuck todd continuing msnbc's special coverage of the coronavirus pandemic. we are, of course, expecting in this hour, the white house's coronavirus task force briefing. we expect it to begin in roughly 15 minutes, at least, that's the latest time they've given us. we hope it's going to be informative. basically, we're looking for the "tell it to me straight, doc" approach. we will be doing our best to dip in and out of these briefings, to bring you the most important and relevant moments and will be, of course, fact checking what was said on the other side. now, for this briefing, the president and members of the task force have said that they're going to show us the data, which convinced them that drastic action was still needed and that the country should basically stay closed through the end of april in order to slow the spread of the virus. aka, flatten the curve. hopefully, that means we're going to get an unvarnished look at how long public health officials are realistically expecting this crisis to last and how bad they think it's really going to be.

"mtp daily" with chuck todd starts right now. >>> welcome to friday. it is "meet the press daily." . the president has just declared the coronavirus a national emergency during a press conference at the white house rose garden where he and the officials around him and members of the private sector attempted to assure the public they had the situation under control and they were once again working furiously to address a testing shortage, which has left the public with an unclear picture of just how severe the threat really is. basically it feels as if every week at the white house we get a new promise of improved, ramped-up testing. but perhaps the bigger headline out of all of this for the average person watching, looking for guidance, were simply the mixed messages of just how seriously we should take all of this. while declaring a state of emergency, a national emergency mind you, and praising institutions that have virtually shut their doors, including many sports leagues, simultaneously the president at times downplayed the threat and said it would

i commend chuck schumer. he's done a remarkable job along with the senate democrats in holding the line until some changes were made that retlekt both house and senate concerns. one is more funding for state and local governments, since you mentioned governor cuomo, i will begin with that. the robust unemployment insurance initiative that is in there. the initiatives for small business are very essential, so that people can get paid and businesses can stay open and survive. i agree with chuck that it's -- small businesses are so important to our economy. i always say there's nothing more optimistic that anyone can do than to start a small business with all of the challenges that are there. maybe except get married. but i don't know, i will leave that there. in terms of other issues that are there, we have a robust appropriations component of this bill that will be helpful. there's some things that just are not happening. but i would rather not negotiate on tv on this because, hopefully, some of these issues w
