>> yeah, chuck, it might.e reminds us how much we need to be concerned about the possibility of new mutations and new variants cropping up everywhere where there are low vaccination rates. the fact that we might have or will have both the omicron and delta circulating si simultaneously, i eenl not sure i would call that necessarily good news, but the fact of the matter is we still don't know where omicron is going in terms of severity. we do know it's going to be a lot more rapidly spreading than is the delta, but so far with not enough numbers yet to say for sure that's going to have a less of a fatality rate and less hospitalization associated with it. just a lot to be seen. the other thing is we're going to find out really pretty soon, probably in a matter of days, chuck, whether or not the omicron is any -- is particularly resistant to the vaccines that are currently available. i don't think that will be the case, but that's more news to come shortly. >> what would you need to know in your mind if omicron

i'm chuck todd. you can sum up the current state of the pandemic in three phrases -- record cases, holiday travel, not enough testing. it all adds up to a bit of confusion and lots of it. the u.s. has seen more than 200,000 confirmed cases every day so far this week. cases are skyrocketing in new york and washington, d.c. we're also seeing spikes in texas and florida. another member of congress has tested positive, the tenth member of congress announcing testing positive in the past week. seven people on a trip have tested positive. the vice president and vice president have had recently had close contacts with someone who tested positive. thankfully neither of they have tested positive. as the lines show you, this virus has totally overwhelmed this country's testing capacity. the white house is once again scrambling with its strategy and messaging. >> we're nearly two years into this pandemic, you're a year into the presidency. empty shelves and no test kits in some places three days before christma

>> that's a really good question, chuck. to your point, i think democrats were lulled into this kind of false sense of security because you didn't have a conservative court for so long, they thought this was settled law. >> you had people like kennedy uphold it. looked like it was bipartisan. by the way, that was in the era of a third of democrats were pro-life in the elected congress, and a third of republicans were pro-choice in the elected congress. >> i think republicans certainly understand that. democrats are beginning to understand what that means, especially around the supreme court whether you're talking about abortion, talking about issues like voting rights, talking about gun rights. democrats are starting to see when you have a court that's more conservative, that is absolutely going to challenge some of the things they thought were kind of settled law. >> look, i'm a little long, so i'm not going to play the bite, but justice kagan's argument was saying there has to be a groundswell, and that's missing here, and

i'm chuck todd. as covid cases rise, the biden administration is struggling to sell and implement the vaccination soft mandate. as early as today, the senate is expected to pass legislation that would attempt to revoke the white house's vaccine and testing mandates for private sector workers. at least two moderate democrats are expected to join with all republicans to pass that bill. the white house told reporters president biden plans to veto the legislation if it actually reached his deck. it comes as more than a few prominent democrats in congress and one at the state level, a couple governors, appear to be souring on similar vaccine mandates. the administration is facing another legal setback as a judge blocked the president's mandate for federal contractors. right now all three of biden's vaccine mandates for federal contractors and healthcare workers and private employers have been temporarily blocked in the courts, in most instances, the judge responsible was appointed by president trump. it's

one of them is senator chuck grassley, republican of iowa. senator grassley, tell us about your friendship. when did you first meet? guest: first of all, thank you for having me here to talk about bob dole and my mentor when i first went to the united states senate. i assumed that my first meeting with him -- i don't remember exactly -- but i was a member of the u.s. house when he was in his second term in the senate. i really got acquainted with him because i was campaigning for the united states senate in 1979 and 1980 and that was his first time to try to be president in the iowa caucuses. we interacted many times in the various counties that he was in, and he just practically lived in iowa for the winter of 1979 into 1980. the first thing about him is he was a mentor for me in the united states senate because he had been there 12 years when i was serving my first year. in my first year in the senate, i was able to get on the powerful finance committee, least insane yorty. he beat -- in seniority. looking -- working closely with him there,

>> chuck, what are your thoughts on these deliberations? into this or are these simply complicated cases that are going to take a while to figure out? >> i think the latter, joe. these are complicated cases that are going to take a while to figure out. look, i've tried numerous cases in federal court as a prosecutor. sometimes my complex cases were resolved quickly by a jury. sometimes my simple cases took the jury a very long time. if either jury was deadlocked, if they were hopelessly deadlocked, they could write a note to the judge and tell him that. we haven't heard that yet. they're asking for transcripts, points of clarification that arose during the trial. i wouldn't read anything into it. >> some people might think, these are long deliberations. we're looking at the potential for a hung jury. to those who think that, what would you say to them? >> it's the right question to ask. what a lot of people don't appreciate is that in order to convict or acquit, a jury has to be unanimous. 12-0 to acquit. 12-0 to convict. and so jurors, aft

and that is senate majority leader chuck schumer. chuck schumer is from new york city. reelection next year. we know that he conceivably will be challenged by a member of the squad from new york, alexandria cortez but let's focus on fact that chum schumer has had progressive left we think demonstrators from nongt of his house in brooklyn at least three times over the last three years. he's under a lot of pressure. and i think that pressure moved the senate majority leader smartly to the left, and took a lot of the party with him if you consider for instance, if they had someone else, say amy klobuchar as majority leader i doubt they would have moved so easily to the left so i'm going to really attach a lot of explanation for what happened to the pressure that chuck schumer is on looking to preserve his own seat from the left in that city especially cortez makes. j i think there's a lot to it and, of course, if you get elected as president of the united states, you have a little different platform and a little different mandate than the majority leader and can't you tell

chuck schumer, of course, is now majority leader of an evenly divided 50-50 senate. it is worth noting here that the last time that happened -- the last time the senate was split 50-50, republican senator jim jeffords of vermont switched parties and actually handed control of the senate to the democrats. the man who made that switch happen was harry reid. reid even gave up his committee chairmanship to sweeten the deal and to get jeffords to make that leap. but of course, harry reid was not just a senate leader. he was a senator from nevada. and so, of course, he left his mark most especially on his home state and his constituents. in fact, just two weeks ago, las vegas renamed its airport in reid's honor. travelers to vegas will now fly into harry reid international airport. joining us now is john rawlson, coe of nevada independent. he was first to report the news of reid's passing tonight. it is great to have you with us. i know it's such a sad state -- a sad night for your state, and certainly for people across this country. let me start by getting your reaction a

>> i'm going to agree with you, chuck. what i just heard the leader say as well., you know -- we're holding the bag on the government shutdown deal. we get blamed for it regardless of the merits of the case. . that's why i chose to get on the c.r.a. version of it. but when i look at some wanting to it's probably due to frustration. frustrated me since i've been here a little under three years. we don't do budgets any more. no regular order. and, remember, this is spending that should have been fleshed out before september 30th. it's for the prior year. c.r.s -- i guess the only consolation is there is so much money wanting to be spent with a new appropriations regimen that crs are beneficial. but shutting government down is another part of the dysfunction. because we don't do budgets, don't mind the business of the biggest business of the world for all the people depending upon it and we spend too much and borrow too much money. shutting the government down is not the way to solve anything. >> let's talk about the congressional review act. we can talk about the me

i'm chuck todd. you've been listening and watching to foreigner police officer kim potter testify in her own defense. they're taking a break just as the moment that they're essentially having her go frame by frame just before, and they stopped it and were taking a break just before we see her shoot daunte wright. potter is charged with multiple counts of manslaughter after she killed a 20-year-old black man at a traffic stop. she said she mistakenly shot him with a gun instead of a taser. the defense asked for a break. we are at the time they have been taking lunch breaks in this trial. so they went ahead and did that. before the cross-examination by the prosecutor, potter detailed her history in law enforcement and her experience of what happened at the traffic stop that day. >> did you say anything when you saw the -- what did you do? >> we were struggling. we were trying to keep him from driving away. it just -- it just went -- chaotic. it -- and then i remember yelling taser, taser, taser, and no

and chuck, i mean, i guess i'm sorry, this is a bit of an intricate question here. but what is the illegal nature of it? is it illegal to operate the box and by multiple set the tickets, or is it illegal to sell them at an inflated price? it's actually, it's illegal to operate them automated software programs that can file thousands of orders in a minute, you know, much faster than any ordinary consumer could do. so the ordinary concert fan, or you know, sporting event fan doesn't have a fair chance to buy a ticket competing against the automated system. so it makes it an unfair and deceptive practice. and then that way, attorney general's in the federal trade commission can prosecuted under our consumer protection laws. and you just mentioned that, but the major retailers, they, you know, they've kind of tried to stop it, but it seems like no matter what actually happens here, they're going to get paid. so whether it's a bought or a parent trying to get the product for their child, it really doesn't make a difference to them because in the end they sold the same am
