joe, i want to talk to you about chuck hagel main republican senator reportedly, susan collins will reportedlyand so will kay hagin which is a big thing. she's from north carolina. that could give him the 60 votes that he needs. what are the other hurdles that hagel still faces here? >> well, he has got a bunch of them. lindsey graham is pledging to put a hold on his nomination, something that harry reid has said he won't entertain but that's probably the first battle. we still have to get to--he has got to get five or six republicans to side with the democrats and vote for him. that's not given our contentious the hearing committee was split down the party line 11-13. not a good sign for the comedy in the senate. that being said there was a lot of talk about this being unusually to filibuster a nominee. john mccain said he's not in favor of filibustering a nominee, especially not one for secretary of. i think it looks like there are going to be positive signs but there is no way that hagel is going to cruise through this nomination. >> michael: yes, if anything it seems than smooth sailing. m

chuck hagel. four republicans, senators thad cochran, susan collins, mike johanns and lisa murkowski broke ranks to join the democrats to vote for ending the debate over hagel and hold a vote on his confirmation. that left harry reid with just 59 of the 60 votes needed to move on to confirmation marking the first ever successful filibuster of a cabinet nominee. because of the coming senate recess, the next chance to confirm hagel will be the last week of february. in the meantime, republicans continued to find new reasons to justify they are obstruction. senator john mccain's latest gripe is personal. >> there's a lot of ill will towards senator hagel because when he was republican, he attacked president bush mercilessly. at one point said he was the worst president since herbert hoover, said that the surge was the worst blunder since the vietnam war, which is nonsense. and was very amti his own party and his own people. people don't forget that. >> people also don't forget that years after hagel's republican herecy, john mccane said this of the man in 2006. i would be honored to have chuck with me

republican senators john mccain, roy blunt, roger wicker, susan collins, lisa murkowski, all of these said before today that they might vote no on chuck hagel, but they wouldn't block a vote from the minority. they wouldn't filibuster. well, today when push came to shove, it was only susan collins and lisa murkowski who kept their word. the others said they wouldn't filibuster and then they did it anyway. john mccain, row wicker, lindsey graham. they all did it. senator graham says he does not want his filibuster today to be thought of as a filibuster even though that's what it is. he says he prefers to think of what he did is blocking the nomination because he wants to use it as leverage to get more information out of the administration on the president's birth certificate, i'm sorry i mean aliens in area 51. i'm sorry. i mean his thoughts about what happened in benghazi. what does hagel know about benghazi? nothing. he had nothing to do with it. but lindsey graham is filibustering his nomination over it anyway. since chuck hagel had nothing to do with it substantively, why block his nomination instead of, say, the john kerry nominat
