there's a lot of members of congress that aren't getting what they asked for, chuck grassley put a request out this week demanding for certain things to be handed over but certain things to be made public and declassified so more people can see them. you have mark meadows, jim jordan who sits on oversight committee, they have outstanding document requests, there are still hundreds if not thousands and thousands of important pages that they have not received. paul: yeah, i think if the president really does want this public to understand, he will have to declassify the documents or a big chunk of them and get them out. all right, still ahead as both sides gear up for contentious supreme court fight the political left attacking one group in particular for the president's election of kavanaugh. what is the federalist society and what does it try to do, we will talk with one of the ♪

well, look, chuck grassley not exactly considered a swing vote and senator whitehouse, i don't think is either. >> there are several senators who legitimately have not made up their mind and would like this information. now, you know, in real terms, i would think that having a long paper trail should be not a problem but a plus because it gives you additional potential insight into who this justice is and -- potential justice is and who how he might rule in named to the bench. the senators legitimately on the fence, a few democrats and a few republicans, they want to know there's not something in these reams of files that might change their mind one way or another. >> it's obviously not just the paperwork. it's for these undecided senators or undeclared, a big issue is roe vs. wade. that's a topic i talked about in his capitol office with vice president mike pence. >> does he still want roe vs. wade to be overturned? >> i, do but i haven't been nominated to the supreme court. >> but your party is the administration that campaigned, you and the president campaigned saying you'll find

well, the committee will -- on the republican side, led by chuck grassley, on the democratic side led by dianne feinstein, the members and staff will work together and decide, in an ideal case, who's asking which questions. in other words, you don't want to go down the dais and have four senators ask the exact same questions. so there's a bit of a divide and conquer strategy that both sides of the aisle will use in terms of their preparation. the republicans will be prepped to defend the judge kavanaugh without a doubt, and the democrats will probe the kind of -- probe his views and ask the kinds of questions that we've been talking about. >> what is this process like for staff? >> it's pretty much a full-time job. i can tell you on the four nominations woirked nominations i worked on, you disappear from your family and regular life for three or four months. it's an incredible experience, but it's very -- it's hard work and a long slog, particularly when you have this sort of record to go through. but for a lawyer on the staff of the senate judiciary committee, there's really nothing

i had a chance to talk with chuck grassley about this, the chairman of the judiciary committee. he met with kavanaugh yesterday and described the meeting on the surface level, for the most part. i tried to press him on one of democrats' chief concerns, whether he'll respect supreme court precedent, particularly on the question of roe v. wade. here is how kruk grassley answered the question. >> under the ginsburg rule, you wouldn't expect anybody to predict or focus his attention on something because they might be ruling on it ten years from now. you look at how they look at the constitution. will they look at the law as the law we pass, or are they going to stretch it, look at the facts of the case and leave their own personal views out of it? that's what i'm interested in. i want to make sure that a judge, when i go before him, is going to be an impartial person. >> reporter: chris, we're really into rules that aren't exactly rules up on capitol hill. when he refers to the ginsburg rule, it is an idea that a judge wouldn't comment on specifics of any case that might come before
