defense secretary chuck hagel has been informed. the joint chiefs have been informed and have issued a statement of sympathy about all of this. what we know is security measures went into effect rapidly by all accounts. people were told they were in lock down, to stay in their homes and offices, shut their doors, stay away from windows. and security personnel moved in to start a sweep and go through these areas and try and determine what exactly had transpired. the shooter is dead, but at this hour we do not know if it is by the shooter's own hand or he was killed. wolf? >> do we know anything specific about the shooter, barbara? >> reporter: wolf, by all accounts this was a soldier. this is believed to have started as a soldier on soldier incident. and at ft. hood, that brings up an awful lot of difficult memories of 2009, as you said, when army mainly nidal hasan, an army serving officer, went into a facility at ft. hood and began shooting, killing 13 people, attempting to murder some three dozen more. he was convicted of all of t

that is not stopping chuck hagel for making this trip to asia right now. i spoke with him in honolulu as he needs -- meets with defense ministers from 10 asian countries. i asked him about the shooting at fort hood. >> it is a terrible tragedy. it has been revisited once again on fort hood. our thoughts and our prayers go out to the families of the big adam scott, and those who have been wounded and are going to continue to focus on them as we should. in the meantime, the investigators do their work. we do not have a lot of the answers, we do not know why it happened, we do not know why he did what he did. we will find that out. this is 24 hours away from that terrible incident, so we are working very hard to ensure first of all the safety on all of our basis of the men and women who work there everyday and their families so that they are reassured. but we will find out. >> what does it say that man and women from the military fighting result in harm's way back home now as well? >> it is a terrible statement. i recognize that, we all do. we have to figure

bottom line is, just two weeks ago defense secretary chuck hagel said there are troubling gaps in the ability to protect service members and employees on bases from internal threats. >> yeah. it's a multifarious problem. you have people in the military in uniform and you have to be able to identify them when they have problems, identify them quickly, and treat them or take them out of the population. that can't be done quickly. it's difficult to identify them. it's even more difficult and time consuming to treat them and get rid of them if you need to get rid of them. >> and you have this enormous base, 50,000 people on there on any given day. in addition to that, like almost any military base, you constantly have people, at least over the last decade or so, who are either leaving for deployment from a war zone, coming back from a deployment to a war zone. by nature of being on one of those bases on a time of war, the stress levels and the number of people who feel stress related to that has got to be extraordinary. >> well, that's the really difficult physical security problem. at a
