i want to bring in chuck hagel. secretary, i really appreciate you joining me.ce officer charging a current officer, waving a marine corps flag. how do republicans call themselves the party of law and order and not support an investigation? >> well, stephanie, it's really astounding. what we've seen, especially the last four years in the view of many republicans, especially in congress, facts don't matter. i guess videos don't matter. the facts are the facts, the reality is the reality. what we've seen here is reality. and why they are so afraid of the truth, to get to the truth, the whole point of the january 6th independent commission, independent of congress was to get to the truth behind all this. but you're going to see this, the world will see this play out more and more over the next few weeks as more cases come up for trial and more videos come out. it's a disgrace to this country. >> but what is their strategy here? to continue to downplay this, we're hearing from republicans, people in the right wing media, and to your point, america has seen it, we wa

it's chuck hagel. secretary hagel, welcome back to the show. let me start with this.n, ben sasse, but the other senator, she did not. what would you your case to her? >> well, chuck, thanks for having me. i wrote an op-ed in the "herald" last week about this issue. i know that two of nebraska's three republican house members voted for the commission, and i'm very glad that senator sasse did as well. why senator fisher did not vote for it, you would have to ask her specifically. but what's happened here and you look at the vote, i think in the senate it's pretty clear. six republican senators voted for an independent commission, a fair, free, independent commission. equal number of republicans, democrats, model on the warren commission. it's the right thing to do. what we've seen, chuck, it isn't just the vote on the commission last week. we've seen a breakdown in trust and confidence in our institutions in this country over the last few years in our leaders. we've segmented our politics, we've polarized our society. and so you've got variations of each party. you've g

joining us now is former defense secretary chuck hagel.as in the cabinet, he was a republican senator representing nebraska. thank you for being with us. michael flynn's a retired general. as a former defense secretary, but also as an army veteran yourself, what's it like to hear a u.s. general sound like he is endorsing the idea of a military coup here in the united states? >> well, john, it's discouraging. and those comments that he made and, obviously, agreed with at that rally were both dangerous and irresponsible. they incite violence. theying for thor divide our country. they further polarize -- pull apart our country. our country is as divided as any time i've seen it since 1968 and i think worse. you have to go back to the civil war to find a time when we were so divided. comments like that exacerbated, make it worse, deepen it. obviously, general flynn doesn't understand the basis of our freedoms, our democracy. america's freedoms and democracy come from our constitution. we're a nation of laws. when we need to change things, we c
