captain chuck nash is a retired navy captain and fox news military analyst. lot of information going on there. chuck, what do you make of the fact that there's this report now out of london today that another malaysia airlines' black box information -- that somehow it was recorded over and so there's a huge mistake in a 2012 incident? >> yeah, gretchen, that sounds to me like procedural error. the cockpit voice recorder is what's termed an event recorder, meaning it's to capture -- that's why it only runs for two hours. it captures an event which caused a problem and either the aircraft landed safely or it crashed and it helps investigators figure out what caused the event. now, the normal procedure is if something goes wrong, you follow your checklist and you land the aircraft and then as soon as everything is done, you pull the circuit breaker to shut off that recording so it doesn't record over the event data. and evidently what happened was the air crew in the malaysia 747 incident in the summer of 2012 did not pull the circuit breaker and it just sat ther

chuck nash, retired navy captain and fox news analyst. let's talk first about this possible oil slick. what would that say to you? >> well, i think what the accident investigators are trying to rule out, is it jet fuel, is it jet a. if it is, they can tell that by chemical analysis. if it is some other kind of distillate, they'll be able to do that and in a lot of cases it is illegal to discharge oil in some regions and in some quantities so what they may do is wind up going after the shipping company that discharged the oil. >> let's talk about this bluefin 21. now that they're no longer hearing the pings, now they have to move to this underwater search, we have this amazing graphic that will show how it actually works. it is actually like a lawn mower, right? going back and forth across the bottom of the ocean? >> yeah. what it does, gretchen, you preprogram it before inserting it into the water. then it swims, it takes about two hours to get down to operational depth in these waters because it is about 12,000 feet deep there. so it wil

. >> with me now, fox news military analyst and retired navy pilot, captain chuck nash. captain, what's your take on reports coming out of china about the pulse signal? >> well, judge, it's very unique that the significant has been identified as being on the right frequency. and the word that gets my attention is pulse because it is a ping, it is as your previous guest just discussed. and it is constant. it is a constant ping every one second. so if they did hear that -- and i say if, because there could be some confusion and quite frankly the chinese have not been either very forthcoming or very accurate in what they've said to this date. but if they did in fact hear something on 37.5 and it was 90 seconds worth of consistent ping, maybe what happened is their sensor did move out of the area or maybe moved in a different part of the water where the signal was blocked. and it can be blocked because of various water conditions. so it is possible. but by this point, we should have had airplanes on scene dropping sona buoys, listening for it. if they don't find it with that

let's bring in captain chuck nash.rt with the news we just got from the associated press about gun fire being exchanged. this is consistent with other reports we've receives of just the tensions boiling over. you're hearing about fire being exchanged and people being injured. this seems different now than where it was at a few months ago. what do you think about it? >> the russians are turning up the heat and when they do that, of course, and you've got heightened tensions like this, there's always the opportunity for one side to do something that causes unintended consequences and then it spirals out of control. this is a dangerous game that the russians are playing. they're trying to ferment a civil war inside of the country to be quite blunt. that's what they're doing. jenna: these reports of gun fire exchanges at the airport is right after we heard about a conversation that took place between vladmir putin and our president just over the last 24 hours. what do you make of the timing of that following the phone call

let's bring in chuck nash, former navy pilot. it's nice to have you here on the show. florida. so just to give you perspective on how wide the search area is. why kind of things are they up against as they look for the black box pinging on the ocean floor. >> >> well r you also have different temperatures in the water, which mask the sound it can travel. so you've got those issues. bus just being out there in the element. as rick was saying, there's a storm coming. plus, these are crews whoç hav been doing this for several weeks. after a while it's going to take a toll on you. we have nine ships and 14 aircraft searching the area. this is an 84,000 square mile area. even though they are looking there, still finding this thing would really beç amazing, it's almost serendipitous. >> is it literally? sid they come across these pings accidentally? or were thaz targeted this specific spot? >> it looks like this is right in the area where the search has moved, and as you notice from your graphic there, you can see all of the previous search areas, and then here are new one

with more on the search, let's bring in captain nash, a fox news military analyst. chuckat belongs or is assigned to a black box. i believe it's 37.5 killahertz. is there anything else in the ocean that would make that sound? >> people have speculated it could have been harmonic from shipping or a pump motor or something where you have the primary frequency and shadow frequencies. i don't think that's the case, though. i think the other day when they got two hours and 20 minutes of good, solid pinger data, and i believe that's what it was, because they're not just listening at 37.5 but they also have spectrum analyzers that look at the wave form and look and they know exactly the frequency exactly what it is. they would not be talking about that as strongly as they are if they thought that it was a whale or some other natural -- not for two hours and 20 minutes. jon: but here is one of the things that bothers me, and maybe we can put up the map that shows essentially where a couple of different ships have been able to pick up sounds that they think could be the actual pin
